Yeah, but what's with the thumb over the top of the fretboad?

Everything else pales into insignificance compared to that heinous crime. Even the faux leather engine driver's hat.

Whomever awarded that 2020 player of whatever award must have exactly the taste I have come to expect from such things. It's a horrific tone (he's playing a Chowny so no surprises there), but it's exactly the kind of burpy cod jazz crap that should have been burned after the 80's. Say "Behs" all you want Danny, it's still insipid 70's lift music from The Towering Inferno.

To quote the great James Coburn: "Don't think that just because you and Colonel Brandt are more enlightened than most officers that I hate you any less. I hate all officers. All the Stranskys, all the Treibigs, all the Iron Cross scavengers in the whole German army."

That's how I feel about Internet personas, influencers, youtubers who do clickbait titled videos and worst of all, those who pretend to care about who they're interviewing but get things so amazingly wrong that it shows they've just not done their research and can't be bothered.

We live in an age where being great at self promotion and shouting about it is better than having any form of groundbreaking talent. Sapko and his ilk are just the symptom, not the cause.

Well, I didn't use all capitals at least.

I'm sure Sapko is a nice guy if you met him. I just can't be bothered with clickbait internet personality crap, so I don't watch it.

Not really my thing but he seems like a decent sort. What little I have watched he has a marmite kind of humour that I find amusing. Not sure about the claims that he’s not much of a bass player. He’s exactly the kind of bass player I like.

For someone who can't be bothered with clickbait internet personality crap you seem to be getting very het up over it 😏

@SimonK The answer to your original question seems to be

A) he's OK

B) I quite like him

C) I despise him with every fibre of my mortal being.

Which seems to me is most opinions on the internet these days.

I think Danny Sapko is a very decent bass player, and his YT content is okay too. I agree with him quite often. I like his irreverent attitude and Yorkshire sense of humour. How he got voted Bass Player Of The Year is beyond me but I'm old fashioned and think that such awards are for people who make records and do gigs ect. Good for Danny, anyway.

You get what you pay for though, and the internet is mainly free so don't be surprised if you have to sift through lots and lots of rubbish to get to the nuggets of gold. Once these guys start doing YT for a living they have to churn out content whether it's worth putting out or not just to have an income. That's usually when things start to go awry. I don't blame Danny or anyone else for giving it a go though; you see so many dismal  options when it comes to employment nowadays that I know I would prefer being on YouTube talking about something I love than on a zero hours contract at Spud U Like. Were it not for the restrictions placed on me by my haemorrhoids (and the terms of my probation) I would have probably started my own Only Fans channel before now.

I hope that one day Danny's channel is successful enough that he gets to live out the ultimate fantasy for most people from Bradford, i.e to get enough money to move to Leeds. He will need to learn how to dress himself properly first, though.

I'm with you mate, the old saying (think it was Lily Tomlin) "The problem with the rat race is that even if you win it you're still a rat" seems relevant? The whole space seems to be full of adults acting like children when sweets are being handed out at a party, trying to shout "Me, me, me" louder than all the other kids, the whole thing pretty much an absence of style over an absence of substance. If I've got time to kill I play music or listen to recordings of people who play music 👍

Getting nominated for awards is apparently something one can influence.

I do know someone who got nominated for a blues award a few years back, much to the consternation of almost everyone I know. The list of nominees was a "who's who" of the blues scene....except one. Apparently one of the nominees asked him directly "who the f**k are you?". So, you just need a good PR machine.

He seems really down to earth and I regularly see him out and about at local gigs supporting bands which I respect a lot.

I don’t like everything he puts out, he’s brash and loud but it’s a refreshing change from most of the bass content out there. I struggled with it at first but warmed to it a lot.

As for clickbait, unfortunately that’s just how it is now for small content creators, without it you’re sadly not gonna get much traction.

That's the point I'm trying to make in a round-about way; there's a slew of bass players now who are famous for being influencers on YouTube, not playing on recordings that you hear on the radio or doing gigs ect. They may or may not make recordings and do gigs, but if they do then not with successful bands or artists that most folks have heard of or enjoy. Some of them are very good players, some of them are pretty average players but good at YouTube.

Jaco Pastorius burst onto the world stage just short of fifty years ago because of his playing with Pat Metheny, Joni Mitchell, Weather Report and as a solo artist on his self-titled debut. That's some entrance.

Contrast that with today. There's high profile bass influencers who have their own signature basses from high-end manufacturers, their own signature strings, merchandise ect. They've never played on a hit record, been in a successful band or done very much except having a social media profile. It's a lot easier to wow fourteen year old kids watching YouTube than it is to impress Joe Zawinul, let me put it to you that way.

Yep, these guys are not today’s Jacos

I like him and prefer him to the bass players online who take themselves very seriously, he makes me laugh. I think he is right about AI, and deserves credit for his comments.

He did a kind of video collaboration recently with Wings of Pegasus (who I also like) which was cool.

I can't comment on his playing other than that he is WAY better than me, lol....

I probably shouldn't have piped up because I also like Davie504, videos of Rico eating things and this 'Rotate your Owl for Science' video so I am clearly a dumbass, I think the internet has destroyed my brainz

Decent player, puts an interesting twist on bass guitaring. Never seen any of his longer form things but for a wee laugh and a bit of bass content on my lunch break, i quite enjoy his stuff.
