Happened to me when the strap button came out on my Thunderbird, it didn’t need that much of an excuse to dive to the floor anyway, but this totally floored it. Fortunately it happened on the last note of the last song in the encore so not too much of a problem.

I put up with it for a long time in the 80's. Then one day, on the counter of a music shop in Leeds city centre, there was a sweet jar with hand written label "strap locks".

It was full of these curious looking things. Have been using the same pair ever since.

I recently took them apart and cleaned them for the first time as they were getting stiff. They must be 40 years old. How wonderful.

Me too - brilliant things.

I’ve had my Dunlop ones for eons now and have never let me down once.

 

( Also used to use Grolsch bottle top washers which were also reliable, albeit a 

bit awkward to get on and off.)

I bought my first set of Dunlop strap locks in the late 80's. I'm still using the same set on my main bass.

I swear by Grolsch-type rubber washers and the various versions made in other colours by Fender, Ernie Ball etc.

Yes - when playing in my bedroom, the strap came off my Les Paul copy guitar and it hit the kickstart of a bike engine that was also in my bedroom, putting a big dent in it.

 

Then in 1988 I bought a Warwick with Schaller straplocks, and every instrument that can be fitted with them since then has been.

 

At last night's open mic, the strap came off the guitar of the guy who was doing house band duty with me for the final number. It was a straplock failure, a Fender one that had come unscrewed from the strap. Fortunately he had hold of it and was able to sit on his amp to finish the song.

I have dunlop strap locks on my Slash Les Paul. I was bending over at a gig and the top one let go.

Luckily no damage but I don't trust them anymore. I don't know why it failed

Mainly used schaller ones most of my gigging life

This happened to a mate of mine with his white, 80s Les Paul deluxe. He was doing Björn Again in front of 10,000 people. Raised his arms and the crowd went “YAAAAAAAY!” guitar falls to the floor and they all go “OOOOOHHHHH!” - a real Wayne’s World moment.

Its interesting that Dunlop straplocks have been mentioned in relation to this. I do some work with a guitarist who has Dunlop straplocks on all his guitars and the only ones that have failed (repeatedly) have been fitted to Les Pauls. The top horn position. We have never been able to figure out why. They click into place OK and seem tight (we can't pull them out of the button) but once he's stood in playing position it only takes a few minutes for it to fail. Tried a couple of sets with the same result.

He's got quite heavy leather straps so maybe the weight has something to do with it. Having said that he's got the same type straps and Dunlop straplocks on his V and Explorer and they are secure with no problems.

Its very odd.

I've fitted Dunlop Strap Locks to every bass since the mid 80's and have never had a problem with any of them.

Never had a strap fail (yet) though I did once enjoy something like this on stage at a jam:

yes it's weird isn't it. It's happened more than once to me but I've always caught it in time, except the one time I didn't (luckily it didn't even go out of tune)
