casapete Posted March 27, 2021 Posted March 27, 2021 I quite like it,, reminds me of the Paul Anka 2005 album āRock Swingsā where he did a lot of covers in a similar style. š 2 Quote
Barking Spiders Posted March 27, 2021 Posted March 27, 2021 (edited) Thing is WebĀ world's awash with people doing 'jazzy' covers of rock tunes and some work better than othersĀ such as this, which retain the coreĀ elements of the original and some bear no resemblance to the original at all... Guest Posted March 27, 2021 Posted March 27, 2021 What's the point of a jazz cover that drains the songĀ of all its emotional content?Ā Quote

Guest Posted March 27, 2021 Posted March 27, 2021 Just to show that I'm not merely being affronted by someone's meddling,Ā here's Enter Sandman taken even further from its original genre, but still with (a readingĀ of) its meaning intact. Ā Quote

Guest Posted March 27, 2021 Posted March 27, 2021 This video made me wonder, is there a jazz cover ofĀ Megadeth's Hangar 18 on YouTube? And the answer is, yes there is, and it's far worse. Curiosity has murdered this puddytat šµ Quote
leftybassman392 Posted March 28, 2021 Posted March 28, 2021 I like it too. Great guitar playing; great singing. Must be honest, I don't really get people slagging off music they don't enjoy listening to, often to the point of prejudging it before a note is played. It's a free country (more or less...), but if you don't like it then why not just say so and be on your way? When the thread title starts with the words 'Jazz cover' it's not exactly aerospace engineering to work out what it's likely to sound like, surely? Ā 2 Quote
oldslapper Posted March 28, 2021 Author Posted March 28, 2021 I just thought it was a good impression of Sinatra using a non typical Sinatra song, played quite nicely. I hadnāt realised how offensive it was šĀ Ā 1 Quote
Downunderwonder Posted March 28, 2021 Posted March 28, 2021 Johnny Cash did a mean U2 One. Totally owned it as a Country ballad. Quote

Likewise. I can't stand Metallica, but at least I got to the end of that and now appreciateĀ there is a song underneath the original racket š. The vocalist was very close to Sinatra, and that's a good thing. Very smooth but with just a hint of menace in the delivery,Ā no more than Frank would have though. The solo guitar in the middle felt out of place - presumably in the original there is a shreddy guitar section which he was copying? Better to have left it out and just served the vocal. Quote

Cato Posted March 28, 2021 Posted March 28, 2021 (edited) OfĀ course there's plenty of 'old school' Metallica fans who hatedĀ the original 'Enter Sandman' and the entire Black album as the moment Metallica 'sold out'. I think it's inevitable that 'classic' songs are going to get reworked and reinterpreted into other styles and genres. It's hardly a new phenomenom. I remember going through my my parents record collection in the early 80s and finding this absysmal swing cover of 'Mrs Robinson' by Frank Sinatra complete with altered lyrics.
