"splodgy" to me Yep, "splodgy" is a good word. Looks a bit like a Music Man Ray gone wrong to me . But then, I still think the Explorer shape look quite radical ("invented" 1958)
Paul S
Looks to me like the loser in the 'Great British Bake Off' bass guitar biscuit challenge. Hand cut from ginger bread dough and then baked.
Skol303
The 90--degree angles of the scratchplate also clash with the "splodginess" of the rounded body. The upper part of the plate should have been curved upwards to match the body contour. It's like they got that far and thought, "ah feck it, pub time" and just drew straight across with a ruler. A lot of thought (and marketing...) has gone into each of those, but pretty..? Nah..! I don't doubt their admirable qualities as playable instruments (well, actually, I do, a bit...), but they're all ugly (saving grace for the bodiless, headless, Steinberger-ish one, for its symmetry, but it ain't beautiful, but any stretch...). Anyone think the opposite..? Hmm; thought not.
Hellzero
You mentioned Fender designs basses as the standard, these basses except the Zeta don't take the Fender path. The Klein being even totally ergonomically thought... I've always found the Fender designs ugly, but he opened the paved straight road, hélas. redbandit599
To me it looks like a small octopus jetting away from the headstock...but I have got a bad cold and am doing some serious paracetamol at the moment.

mrtcat
If you hung one of those on the wall in a music shop with all the other basses it would be like Sally Gunnel mingling with the cast of made in Chelsea.

I like the care that was taken to make sure the top line of the pickguard doesn't even run parallel to the strings. It's easy to make fundamental mistakes when lining up separate elements of a guitar. Check out Dolores, my BC Rich Zombie.

BreadBin
It all started with the maker lining up the top edge of the fingerboard with the through neck timber, and from there on everything went wonky! They didn't allow for the taper as far as I can see.

BreadBin
It's evil - if you play sat down the lower horn has a bit that stabs you in the leg whilst the same feature on the upper horn sticks into your sternum! My stepdaughter reckons it looks like a chicken. 1

stingrayPete1977
You know when someone bakes you a birthday guitar cake and that person hasn't got a clue what the difference between a Les Paul and Double bass is, this bass looks like that cake.

Hellzero
I know, but it was originally posted to show some non Fender designs that are not splodgy... So now a bit out of context. The last one is mine and is a Stradi (www.stradi.pl), a really ergonomic design.
