Phil Adams Posted February 20, 2016 Share Posted February 20, 2016 30 odd years ago, a workmate lent me The Captain and Me, and Stampede, both of which I have loved and play regularly. I recently bought from Amazon, from a series entitled "Original Album Series" a box set (loads of choices, all 5 albums for around a tenner a set, worth checking out) containing the 2 albums I already had plus Tolouse Street, Vices/Habits, and Taking it to the streets. I'm loving them so much I'm hungry for more. Are there any more albums than the 5 I have? I love the country rock feel particularly of the Doobies, but can anyone recommend me someone else to check out. We all know and love the Eagles of course, but there may well be some lesser known gens that I can lose myself in. A little less keen on the later, Michael McDonald more soulful albums (sorry Mike!) The track Road Angel is just such a fine example of a great rhythm unit. As far as recommendations for other country/rock type bands. With those five CDs you have the cream of their stuff. Next two two try are Minute By Minure and Livin on the Fault Line. The other two classic period albums. Tho on both the Michael McDonald soul influence gets heavier. Their self titled album is rawer but a great listen too. Tiran Porter... What a bass player! The later post reform stuff doesn't really stack up to the early stuff but is still quite listenable. There are a couple of live albums which are good too, esp Rockin' down the Highway: The Wildlife Concert. Kind of a greatest hits live set. Studio Discog... They were part of the line up at the first Knebworth festivals I attended back in the mid 70's, one of my other all time bands were also on the line up, the Allman Brothers Band. My pal is holidaying in Florida in June and by pure luck while he is there, Journey and the Doobies and playing a double header gig in Tampa, I'm feeling a little jealous. Thanks in advance [/quote] Hardly lesser known, and perhaps more New Orleans than country, but have you checked out Little Feat? Their live album, Waiting for Colombus, would be as good a place to start as any. Or the, sadly, only solo effort of their then ex-singer Lowell George - Thanks, I'll Eat it Here. I was at the Doobies/Allmans Knebworth and remember, after Gregg enthusiastically proclaimed 'we'll play all night', having to head for home. Was also at Feats rainbow gig that produced 'Columbus'. I have a LF album, As time goes by IIRC with the Duck/Bogart cartoon on the front. Will give another listen to that, visit Amazon for some CDs and then jump to the Little Feat thread on this very forum. Oh, and the Decemberists, I did have a CD by them that my daughter did for me. I remember a song about a man who's lady kept giving birth, and he lept killing the babies. Odd, but remember it as being interesting music. Count Bassy Posted February 23, 2016 Share Posted February 23, 2016 I had not heard of the Doobie brothers until I cam home from the pub and Whistle test had some film of the Doobies (Eyes of silver I think, and something else) - Vices had just been released, and I went all the way to Shrewsbury (23 miles) to buy it the next day. He was backing singer for Steely Dan who had really changed going into the late 70's to a more Soul Jazz style. Whether that was within him,? I'm sure it was. This for me is great. Bit of a soul funky country vibe. Later picked up by funk legend Candi Staton. And then the UK Soul Jazz Funk band Incognito. I like the Mike McDonald era but it just doesn't rock like I want it to.... I've been lucky enough to become great friends with Tiran over the last 15 years and have visited him/stayed at his house/studio on a few occasions - a lovely man with a mega bass collection and a sackful of road stories! I remember one of my mates had school brought in a Doobies album one day and we listened to it solidly for ages; must have been c.1977 or so. Don't Change Horses was on the album as I recall. Funnily, heard a female-fronted Aussie band, the Stratospherics, cover that track live last year, first time I thought of it for ages. Ace song...
