so i had a newbie with 0 posts offer to but am item i have for sale along with several PM's from other people but he was the first.
so i put them on hold for him & gave him payment details,3 1/2 hours after reading my reply he still hadn't replied to me to confirm he was buying or sent any payment so naturally i sold said item to the next person in the "queue"
when i told the original no show newbie i received this reply
"Just got your messages, thanks, it is always good to be called mate by somebody, thanks mate. At least I now know what "on hold" means. I'm glad I didn't gift you 25 quid. Cheers anyway, Pete x"

perhaps if he'd bothered to reply he wouldn't be so upset.

i have dealt with many BC members over the years without issue, all deals have been pleasant & gone smoothly, however it seems some newer members have a very poor attitude, maybe its a sign of the times.

I would not get upset at 3.5 hours. He might have read it and been on the way out to work or something.

Couple of days- certainly. But not less than a day.
Agree.

fair point,I have been messed about by a couple of new members recently having put something on hold for them, then promptly disappearing never to be heard from again.
It only takes a few seconds to fire a quick reply & keep your seller informed, payment can wait a couple of days but a confirmation can't,especially when other buyers waiting.
oh well.

This.
At least send the chap another message saying you'll need a response by whenever, or you can only keep it on hold for so long, something like that.

3.5 hours is simply impatience. The OP should get a grip.

As harsh as this is. I totally agree. I'd be fairly unhappy if something was only kept for 3 and a bit hours then sold on.

I've had a few new members on here mess me about a little (generally just expressing interest and then not replying for a few days/weeks) but I've also sold quite alot to people who have 0 posts and they're generally great to deal with.

I'm sorry to say I agree - not everyone is on the forum 24 hours a day (like me) and is able to respond to PMs instantly. I know it's hard to believe, but for some people BassChat is only a small part of their lives along with socialising, work, family and all the other piddling crap that gets in the way of looking at Basses For Sale during one's waking hours.

Say you bought something on eBay in the morning, didn't instantly go through checkout, and discovered in the evening when you got home from work that the item had been sold to someone else because you hadn't paid for it within a few hours. You'd be furious and rightly so.

The newbie buyer's response seems remarkably controlled under the circumstances. I would have had more to say about it.

About 5 years ago, I was buying an amp from someone on BC and after 2 days of sorting out price, address and time, he decided to remember that he'd previously promised it to someone else and backed out!!

Now that's an example of poor attitude, poor memory, whatever. I didn't feel the need to post about it though.

Wow thanks

It's ok.

We've just done a course at work to spot whether emails and dealings with potential customers are fake. Very high up the list is spelling and grammar. If the spelling and grammar are bad then I'll walk away from any potential transaction. It's a good indication that the person won't act professionally.

As for someone I don't know calling me 'mate'...

I don't necessarily think that's a deal-breaker, mate. Some people think it's just being friendly.
Not if I'm the customer it's not. I don't call my customers mate and I don't expect people selling to me to call me mate. I'm just old fashioned I expect.

I don't either (unless I know them) but it doesn't bother me unduly. I might find it bemusing in any other purchasing context but I think Basschat is far less formal than a typical professional online marketplace. Sellers are just members, not commercial enterprises.

Anyway I guess I am rather impatient so most likely in the wrong, but i still say that if you read a PM why not reply it only takes a few seconds & I didn't get a definite "yes I will have them & sort payment .....",where as the other buyer was chomping at the bit to throw his money at me,in business an item is not officially sold until it's paid for after all.
As for me calling him "mate",he didn't give he his real name so what am I suppossed to call him ?,if he's so touchy then why did he not tell me his real name.
Over & out.
Am i in touble for my punctuation again TimR :D

Maybe he had to check on something? Like the state of his finances or maybe ask permission from his other half (or is that just me? ).

I get into work early, and usually have a check on BC before starting the mundane tasks... I could therefore send a PM at around 7.15am but might not be able to get onto BC again until late afternoon. So I think a 210 minute "holding period" is pretty short in the wider scheme of things, and I'd be pretty miffed if the seller had then gone and sold "my" purchase to someone else... <_<

Anyway - it's all water under the bridge innit? :)

...Silly Bollocks?
Without a full (or at the very least cursory) examination of the prospective buyer's testicles, it would be presumptuous, if not slightly rude, to make such assumptions. A photo will usually suffice in these situations...
