Thank you.. Sweet looking basses.. What happened to the original neck of the 20th anniversary bass? 😁

Hi,

the original Neck is Birdseye maple with a maple fingerboard, and is wrapped up in bubble wrap waiting for me to get an alternative body for the carbon neck,it’s a great bass the maple cap gives it a top end sparkle,

sounds punchy even unplugged.

Wow that’s pretty bling! So does an HH ray sound the same as an H when you select the rear pickup only?

Mmm. The Specials sound different from normal Stingray's anyway, so the definitive answer would have to come from someone who has tried both versions of the Special to make that comparison.

If I had to guess, I would say yes, as my one has a pleasing sound when switched to the rear, but it's not the same as any of my single H Stingrays.

Ah that question ! And I have a single H Ray to compare it to.

The Special still has flatwounds from the previous owner and the single H is not a Special. So my comparison may not be objective...

I think @Chiliwailer tried both at BD when he bought his.

I have the 4HH Special and had the 4H version, with a brief overlap where I had them both.

To my ears the HH sounded no different to the H when set to the bridge pickup, which was a relief as I didn’t want to sacrifice that sound, just add to it with the other options the HH gives you.

Yeah, played a few at Andertons the week they came out. Too many variables though to say the exact cause of difference, the single H were heavier and had ebony or rosewood boards. It’s also the same old thing of the same spec bass won’t always sound the same on each example.

I get that the signal has to travel through additional components on a HH, but they always fundamentally sound like a Ray to me. I guess the only real way to know is to alter/test a HH as a H... but life it surely too short 😀
