The USA 77 has a lot more growl in it and is definitely my favourite of the lot, really love that tone. Good to hear the alder bodies properly alongside the basswood bodied Japanese model. ...and they've done one for Jazz basses too ... Machines Posted October 3, 2014 Share Posted October 3, 2014 Great video which generally told me there isn't much difference between them. The 77 was indeed a lot brighter and possibly had a a lower action but I think you could have done the same with any of them with a little EQ. For personal preference I went with the 1977, which also did a great job of demonstrating why you should never use sh*t-Glo as a colour for bass. police squad Posted October 3, 2014 Share Posted October 3, 2014 MIM and USA sound the same until the tone is rolled right off, then the 98 is a little brighter. The 77 is totally different. Ash body and maple board. Much more zing to the sound and a little less mid. In fact, fkn lovely. The japan basswood sounds a little darker, just a tad though, than the MIM or USA 98. I liked the other 3 equally, though am going to listen to this with my proper speakers tomorrow, so may get a better view of them, but the 77 def wins for me. Now having listened through better speakers, the 77 is still tops. The US gets the vote over the MIM as it has a bit more articulation to the sound. Probably on 100% tone would go Japan, Mexico, USA, 77, but really, with the exception of the 77 as Machines said, I doubt you would notice the difference in a band setting. [/quote] Yep, so many write off 70s Fenders, but I`ve only seen/played good ones. Admittedly they can be heavy - my 78 is 10lbs, and a mate of mines 77 weighs a staggering 13lbs, but I`ve never seen this as a reason for them being "bad" basses, if they both sound and play well.
