KiOgon Posted June 15, 2013 Share Posted June 15, 2013 I'm just off to see the Vulcan A LEGENDARY Vulcan bomber will fly over the skies of Hastings next month in what is believed to be the first time the world famous aircraft has visited the town. The iconic jet will blast out its trademark deafening engine noise across the town in a special display on Saturday June 15. Now the only flying Vulcan left in the world, the XH558 is expected to arrive over our skies at 3.40pm for the start of a 15 minute display. Kiwi Posted June 15, 2013 Share Posted June 15, 2013 I think it's just a pants wettingly intimidating piece of machinery - just coming to terms with how something so big can defy gravity was my first challenge when I saw one at Farnborough many years ago. For those who haven't already visited, the air museum at Duxford has one on display (as well as a concord). I can just touch the wing when I stand under it. Its an absolute shame that XH588 WILL get retired eventually. So catch her while you can and donate! Machines Posted June 15, 2013 Share Posted June 15, 2013 Seen XH558 4 times now and the 5th coming up at Fairford next month. It's awesome, but not as much as being stood 200 yards behind Concorde taking off with full afterburner, no fence in the way and feeling the hot air blast you whilst your whole body is vibrating. geoffbyrne Posted June 15, 2013 Share Posted June 15, 2013 For loud, the two things I remember are (as above) standing at the end of Glasgow runway as Concorde took off over me on full afterburners. The air in my lungs was reverberating & throbbing - an incredible sensation - really physical. Not long after was at an air show at Leuchers & saw (& heard) an American B1 bomber take off & got into a tight spiral climb directly over the runway - not physical like Concorde, but LOUD!!!! G. It came in low from the sea and then into steep climb with full afterburners just as reached the beach. The sound was thunderous and shook the bowels, fantastic aircraft. A flying test-bed, but with one to replace the four normally used. Concorde has 4 of these, producing 152000 lbs of thrust on take-off. Fuel consumption..? Just over 25000 litres/hour. Noisy..? Count Bassy Posted June 16, 2013 Share Posted June 16, 2013 From the age of 6 to 14 I lived in Lincolnshire, and this was 1963 - 71 when the Vulcans (and Victors) were in their heyday (and the main nuclear deterrent). Probably saw Vulcans going over at least once a week (Victors less so). One day a solitary Vulcan came over really low over the house. Awe inspiring, but absolutely deafening (serious hands over ears loud). I'm sure I could see the pilot (but it was a long time ago). On another occasion they were moving the main Vulcan/Victor fleet, from one base (Conningsby??) to another, and in one day had four or five formations of 5 or 7 come over.
