ive been listening to this band for a long time but to this day im still in awe of there stuff..., great sense of humour.. a very sophisticated approach to music, with such a fantastic attention to detail..... as with so many SD albums there is so much going on lyrically and musically.... the more i listen to this band the more i realise how clever they are/were.... [color=#333333][font=Arial,]If you do not know SD, then listen to these to improve the quality of your daily existance - yep, they"re that good.... imo oh..they got some serious funk also... I agree 100 %. Their music seems to be timeless, and every time I listen I hear something new.

However, I find that their more recent material just does not have the same appeal.

I played "Two Against Nature" and "Everything Must Go" many times, and just could not get into them.

Just seems like more of the same.

Perhaps it's just me.

They also did not do " all around my hat' ,)

Biggest flaw in my book, apart from that I don't really like SD despite all the obvious qualities. I _think_ they are very good at what they do, but I'm not _moved_ by it.
Give me the Sex Pistols or Flux of Pink Indians any day.

best,
bert

i hate myself for a few things but one is my blind spot for some obviously great music - keep trying but hate Dylan, and keep trying Steely Dan and while I dont hate them, they just dont do much for me. I will follow the links and try again now I am older still.

What can you say about the Dan that hasn't been said already? Brilliant writers, great producers, fantastic arrangers using the best players to realise their vision. Unashamedly complex and challenging but in a refreshingly relaxed and unpretentious way. I have been fascinated by them since I was 15 years old, and that's a long time ago now. They are one of those bands that you can listen to the records over and over again and keep getting something new from them. Superb and superlative.

Horrible, clinical, souless, over-produced. I must be missing something. Give me Steeleye Span (who still tour regularly) any day.

Obviously pretty damning but I can always see why arguments like this get formed over Steely Dan. Their approach to music is pretty clinical.

However their stuff in the 70's was truly great and I think the production and detail of their stuff has largely stood the test of time. Soulless it ain't. Their new stuff is way too polished, way too clinical for my ears and they kind of lost the spark with Two Against Nature and Everything Must Go, I don't like them as albums. But the earlier stuff was amazing.

Yes, I think you are, but you're doubtless moved by something else entirely. For me, I don't get Miles Davis, or The Beatles, or a whole host of other acts that most people might think sublime for that matter, but I think Steely Dan are wonderful. When I put on one of their albums, I'm transported to another place. Yet, when I was offered tickets to see them live in London a number of years ago, I turned them down - I didn't want to be disappointed. On record, they're always fabulous. All part of the rich tapestry that is life, my friend!! :)
