OK so Im after cpoied of your set list if you're out there playing the pubs.

What going down well and what hanging in there as a solid pub classic.

Ideally if you have a word doc you can pm I'd really appreciate it as Im looking to start something after the summer and suitable recruiting and rehearsing time.

Cheers.

I'd prefer if this doesn't turn into a debate thread over whats a goo or bad song - just an idea of what you cats are playing and what the punters are enjoying :)

This is disgraceful! :) Not only do you not want to avoid playing the same old chestnuts that everyone else does, you are actually looking to replicate it on purpose! A covers band tribute band!!

I'm off to slash my wrists

PS sorry, krispn. I am obliged by reputation to feign outrage. :)

My last band was a punk covers band, and the songs that seemed to go down best with audiences were:

I fought the Law - Clash
Pretty Vacant - Sex Pistols
Gangsters & Message to you Rudi - Specials
Fight for yr Right - Beastie Boys
Sedated & Sheena is a punk rocker - Ramones
Basket Case - Green Day
20th Century Boy - T Rex
Common People - Pulp
So What- Anti Nowhere League

These were the ones that people seemed to like to dance to - or maybe its cos we played them at the end of the night and people were drunk by then.

My last band was pub/covers.

Songs that went down well for us were:-

Kings of Leon - Sex on Fire
No Doubt - Just a Girl
Nirvana - Teen Spirit
G'n'R - Sweet Child of Mine (yes, I know - the guitarist was a bedroom slash wannabe)
Rolling Stones - Honkey Tonk Woman
AC/DC - You Shook Me All Night Long
AC/DC - Highway to Hell
Rainbow - Since You've Been Gone
Undertones - Teenage Kicks
The Clash - Should I Stay or Should I Go

There were more but these seemed to always get the best reaction from the crowds/get the place jumping

:)

Yeah I know tragic isnt it. I'm not knowledgable yet to just zen out and jazz the bit out but frustrations with my current band who play the same set of songs over and over has me wanting to be gently pushed in the right direction of what pople are diffing in the pubs.

I ain't got no shame playing tunes people actually might enjoy...another reason to avoid the jazz.

Zing!

Let the flaming commence :)

I think it is a fine line between playing a set that you haven't heard a zillion other bands do and one that can still get the people in.

Of course, there are reasons people play some of the really 'popular' songs, and I mean popular with the bands themselves.
The songs are easy to mimic _ due the song and the playing parts ..and are well known..so you aren't really hammering either party with much of an effort outside of playing them.

Most local bands might be bass, drums and gtr with vocals..which is pretty limiting itself with the songs you can attempt.
Get two gtrs in the mix and you can have a fight over who plays what... and it takes very good players to dovetail their parts which is effort in a rehearsal situation that you might not put in..or have time to.
Even gtrs and keys get in the way of each other at times..unless you make the effort not to, IMO.

I guess I don't blame people for playing populist sets...but would prefer a band to think about it abit more, myself.

If you pick a James Taylor song, for instance, that might be a classic... how would you approach it.. or be able to approach it?

I like bands who like to play songs they like rather than be the same act as the others as that is what packs them in...as I said, fine line.

If there was a most popular set compiled by posters on here, I wonder what % of the numbers people here would play.

I find that some pubs/venues are a bit more discerning..for want of a better world, than others so you can put in a Talking Heads number and get away with it... possibly.
