Mick was diagnosed with Cancer last year - hope he doesn't join the many brilliant musicians we lost in 2010...
To me, Bakithi Kumalo is easily the best fretless bass player around. His stuff on Paul Simon's Graceland and The Rhythm of The Saints albums is as good as it gets. The best stuff is probably on Graceland, where there was more of a focus on those South African sounds and the bass was a real driving element like it is in Mbaqanga and Zulu pop music.

This is the one for me:

+1, i love his playing on graceland.
I think John Giblin's work on Kate Bush Ariel album is very good.... also his work on the simple minds live album 'Live in the city of lights' is fantastic
+1 for anything giblin inc with john martyn and the other bush and PG albums, an enormous sense of melody, space and atmosphere.

Been said already but pretty much anything by pino palladino in the 80,s for me "everytime you go away" ,"everywhere i lay myhat"and "tear your playhouse down" the latter with a boss oc2 doing its thing, its cool he,s reinvented himself, playing and tone wise (although im sure he,d say what he does now is more him!!) but i believe he brought a truly unique melodic voice to pop music, a lot of the gary numan/eagles/elton john/eric clapton etc stuff was pino too ( even lady in red by chris de burgh, and he ade it sound good) love him.
John giblin playing with kate bush and another big favourite Tony levin,s playing with peter gabriel ( ive pretty much decided after owning three fretless jazzes in my time chasing Jaco, my next fretless will be a musicman!!)
Easy - that'd be Eberhard Weber on Kate Bush's Mother Stands For Comfort:

Not sure if he's playing fretless bass guitar or an upright on this, but gorgeous playing all the same.

Jon.
I came into the thread to post this track. Outstanding feel.

Does upright count?

Oh, and this is great too:
Jeff Berlin once said he doesn't bother with fretless because everyone just ends up sounding like Jaco. For me though, Pino's playing is unbeatable and original.
What you're forgetting is that Jeff Berlin is a Cock!

Jaco aside remember :)

*apologies for the huge implication that Manring doesn't have his own fretless sound... Don't hurt me, please!*
