C'MON :)
This is quite true.... it is like wanting a top class 100m race without Usain bolt.

Listen to his work on Michele Colombiers album.. it is THE benchmark AFAIAC.

But..in the spirit of this thread, Lincoln Goines on Dave Grusin. forget the album
This has to be my favourite fretless bass recording to date if I take Jaco out of the equation.

What outstanding fretless bass tracks spring to your mind?? No Jaco :) !!
That's creepy! I saw the thread title and my first thought was "Aquamarine!!" - then I opened it to see this as the OP!!

Cool choice, and one of my all-time favourites. Nothing flashy or over the top, just tasteful and lifts the track to somewhere sublime...

David Margen isn't it?

Hmmmm.... I love the recorded version of "Runnin'", but this live version is not so great.

Thanks for posting though! I still think he's a great player!
This John Giblin track sold me my Wal :)

April

It wasn't until later that I realised it was the tune, not the sound, that moved me.
April is one of my fave warm-up/practice pieces (or as my seven year old daughter says, "Oh Daddy you always play that"). Lovely tune and it's really good for intonation practice as it moves a long way up and down the fingerboard.

It wasn't just John Giblin that got me playing fretless though (and made me sell everything to buy a Wal in my 20s), it was mainly Percy Jones (Jaco and Eberhard too), and he's not had a mention so far in the thread, which is near criminal. Anything off the Masques album would do, but the title track is a bit special:
Jeff Berlin once said he doesn't bother with fretless because everyone just ends up sounding like Jaco. For me though, Pino's playing is unbeatable and original.
Yeah, Graceland sounds just like Weather Report with vocals.... :) It's hard to think of a bass player with a more distinctive 'voice' to his playing than Kumalo.

But that's not a fretless bass he's playing. :)

C'MON :)
Jacos' tone in that is very quiet, what you're hearing is Zawinuls' left hand bass on a Korg.

Erskine is a monster.

Agreed, still a great performance though - even though we're not allowed Jaco.

'Hymn' by Gary Willis - his solo and sound are just stunning - I've looked for a stream of the track but can't find it - it's the last track on his album 'No Sweat' - the best post-Jaco fretless player IMHO (Manring is up there as well of course!)
