1. Why, oh why, did the mullet ever go out of fashion? I think it's a great look.
2. Where there's money to be made you'll always get chancers. There's quite a few 'traders' on BC who wouldn't know one end of a bass guitar or amp from another. They just buy and sell stuff to make a few quid.
3. He must have run out of yellow paint.
4. I assume the P/J has the jazz pickup turned off completely. Because all I can hear is a (very nice) P split pickup on both. And I can't tell the difference. They both sound great.
5. One of the venues I play in has the 100 watt one as backline. It was pretty good. I really loved the fact I could pick it up with my pinky. I thought about buying one of the 500 watters but don't like the stories of unreliability.
6. If you do part out I'd be interested in the body.
7.
I am not sure I can tie commitment directly to rehearsing. There are many really good bands with totally committed members that hardly ever rehearse. Blue
I meant commitment to being as good a band as they can be. It doesn't matter how good the musicians in a band are, rehearsals of song arrangements will always make the songs sound better. Being professional doesn't just mean being paid to play. Some of the best paying gigs I've played were shockingly unprepared and shambolic. I felt embarrassed to take the money(but I did )
8. Commitment is what I look for. If band members won't put the hours in to rehearse a set so it can be played well, then I'm not interested. I'm too long in the tooth to be seen playing with the equivalent of a school band.
9. I have a Silver Squier Jazz. They are very nice basses. I saw one for sale recently on ebay and the seller had taken a picture of the original receipt. It cost £260 back in around 1993, 22 years ago. They were a cut above the bog standard Squiers. And this is it
10. For many years I was not a fan of Jazz Basses. Then I tried a friends old rusty, manky MIJ Squier and I was converted. I liked it so much that when I saw the same model on ebay, I bought it. Since then I've owned a few. MIJ Geddy Lee MIJ 62 reissue MIJ Silver Squier Standard Indonesian Squier And a few custom jobs, made up from parts bought on Stratosphere's ebay site. At the moment I only have the one Jazz, which is the original MIJ Squier I bought so long ago (refinished in Sonic Blue) , with a set of pups out of a Mex 'Road worn' Jazz. It's fitted with a John East J Retro pre amp and is the most versatile bass I've ever owned.
11.
That's great. She did great, and Cat too. Cat used to be with one of my friends. He said she would be over the moon to be supporting the Foos. Who wouldn't be. They could do with a bass player, especially for stadium sized rock! I'm sure there would be no shortage of takers for that slot. They came across brilliantly with original sounding material.
I think she enjoyed herself. The Foos are her fav band. 12.
perhaps clapping to the 2nd and 4th beat became popular when rock and roll 'invented' the snare on those beats. I seem to remember an interview with John Lennon where he was saying when they cut the live 'give peace a chance' the crowd were clapping on the 'wrong' beat so they had to alter it in the studio later. I may have dreamt that though
You're right. They had to put a slapback echo on it to try and correct it.
13.
What a cracking gig last night. Nate Mendel had a fine array of instruments on show and his playing suitable held things together. I thought his best sounding bass was his red P, the newer one of the two he used. His old one didn't cut through as much. Dunno what pups he has but what a significant difference it made. He also brought out a white Ric that sounded nice and his other may have been a Gretsch or a Gibson semi hollow. Anyway, I was impressed with him. I know he gets slated but he showed a fine array of melodic and 8ths. If only he smiled more! Royal Blood were pretty good too. What a set up. Does he have different strings going to different amps? Honeyblood didn't have a bassist so I won't comment, except to say that the local girls did good.
My neice is stina from Honeyblood. Thanks for the positive comment. She'd love to have a bassist in the band and one day she might. I'm constantly amazed by the mighty sound she can create without one.
14. I used to own a BC212 and a TC 450 classic. It was a decent cab. Fine on it's own when I was playing with my blues band but it wasn't quite loud enough when I played with a rock guitarist and a loud drummer. In the latter scenario you'd probably need two. I assume the new cabs are much like the old ones with a cosmetic tweak.
15. A bit of wire with the correct connectors on either end would be a good place to start. Take pictures of the output on the bass amp and the aux input of your stereo, then show them to the nice man at maplins.
16. Sound is subjective. The only way to find out is to change the pickup and use your ears. I changed the pickup on an old Squier Precision to a Fender custom shop one. The sound is different.........but is it better? They both sound good to me.
17. Justin Currie (singer songwriter in Del Amitri) put out a solo album in 2007 called 'What Is Love For'. It got many 5 star reviews but didn't sell many copies. It's an epic album and a real lesson in how to write a song. And he's a bass player too http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KMbcm_1roeU
18. Ooooh....a dream gig. But alas I am way up in the Celtic fringes.
19.
Afternoon all, A few weeks ago me and the missus went up to visit her dad for a weekend. Whilst up there we had a few drinks and got talking music and what not. we started discussing great tracks and albums and we got on to one that I used to have and have since lost whilst changing phones and computers over the years. Anyway, a couple of days ago I remembered this and got on iTunes in search of the album I had meant to buy when we got back. The Lexicon of Love by ABC is a fantastic album, I had forgotten just how good it is and since listening to it again fully appreciated how good the bass is on it. Since listening to it, I've not put my fretless down and can't stop playing it. Who played on this album? Cheers, James
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lexicon_of_Love#Personnel
20. Shocking corporate do on Friday night. Had to play Mustang Sally .Good money but soul destroying. Last night was our, sold out, Edinburgh Fringe show. That gave me a bit of a boost. New CS pickups in my P bass sounded good at both gigs.
21. I've had a couple. They are pretty chunky.
22.
I usually play bass about three or four hours a day. But I don't necessarily play our set. I suspect the band only play through the set when we're at rehearsal, which is at most once a week. This explains why someone always forgets something in every number. I find this very frustrating of course. My solution used to be to have a couple of beers before rehearsals so I would play down to their level, or at least not care when they fecked it up. They countered this by turning up drunk as well, so it became a race to the bottom. But now I've given up the booze I can't do that any more. So I've started looking for other work. I used to mock 'wanted' ads which said 'no people with booze or drug problems', but now absolutely agree with them. So many people I've played with in the past see rehearsal not only as a social event (which is wrong anyway imho), but as an opportunity to get pissed-up or stoned speechless. Then they can't play and/or can't remember what they're doing, or worse, they have to be in the same state they were when they learnt the material. Up with this I cannot put! /RANT Edit: Audition tomorrow evening, wish me luck...
Your band sound like a bunch of feckless, wasters. I have depped for bands like this, who use the money from gigs to merely get pished. One band I was in would set up a tab at the bar and at the end of the night the band owed the bar money, instead of the other way around. Dump em!
23. I've had two over the years. Great basses.
