1.
Afternoon all, A few weeks ago me and the missus went up to visit her dad for a weekend. Whilst up there we had a few drinks and got talking music and what not. we started discussing great tracks and albums and we got on to one that I used to have and have since lost whilst changing phones and computers over the years. Anyway, a couple of days ago I remembered this and got on iTunes in search of the album I had meant to buy when we got back. The Lexicon of Love by ABC is a fantastic album, I had forgotten just how good it is and since listening to it again fully appreciated how good the bass is on it. Since listening to it, I've not put my fretless down and can't stop playing it. Who played on this album? Cheers, James
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lexicon_of_Love#Personnel
2. Shocking corporate do on Friday night. Had to play Mustang Sally .Good money but soul destroying. Last night was our, sold out, Edinburgh Fringe show. That gave me a bit of a boost. New CS pickups in my P bass sounded good at both gigs.
3. I've had a couple. They are pretty chunky.
4.
I usually play bass about three or four hours a day. But I don't necessarily play our set. I suspect the band only play through the set when we're at rehearsal, which is at most once a week. This explains why someone always forgets something in every number. I find this very frustrating of course. My solution used to be to have a couple of beers before rehearsals so I would play down to their level, or at least not care when they fecked it up. They countered this by turning up drunk as well, so it became a race to the bottom. But now I've given up the booze I can't do that any more. So I've started looking for other work. I used to mock 'wanted' ads which said 'no people with booze or drug problems', but now absolutely agree with them. So many people I've played with in the past see rehearsal not only as a social event (which is wrong anyway imho), but as an opportunity to get pissed-up or stoned speechless. Then they can't play and/or can't remember what they're doing, or worse, they have to be in the same state they were when they learnt the material. Up with this I cannot put! /RANT Edit: Audition tomorrow evening, wish me luck...
Your band sound like a bunch of feckless, wasters. I have depped for bands like this, who use the money from gigs to merely get pished. One band I was in would set up a tab at the bar and at the end of the night the band owed the bar money, instead of the other way around. Dump em!
5. I've had two over the years. Great basses.
6. You can always cheat and put a piece of foam under the bridge.
7. I had one of those for a long time and frankly they're pretty loud. They can compete with a loud drummer at a pub gig. I doubt you'll need an extension. I really liked mine but I left it in a leaky boot and the electrics got frazzled.
8.
This is basically a "what would you do" question but needs quite a bit of explaining. Here's my post from Daily Annoyances thread which does so : Booked for a multi-band gig type thing. Used this 'promoter' before and had no issues. This time however has been quite different. Picked up the tickets for it last week and messaged one of the people working there asking if backline is provided as we were under the impression that it was but weren't 100% sure. Waited 3 days to get a reply that was less than helpful but it basically said "full backline minus breakables provide but can you bring your own guitar and bass amps?". Replied saying no we couldn't but will cabs/drum kit and P.A be provided? to which I still haven't had a reply. So I phoned the events manager today who said backline is to be provided by the bands. None of my band drive so taking gear from one place to another isn't easy (especially if it's cabinets/the guitar amps). This wouldn't be an issue if any of us drove and had our own gear that was to a standard of being able to be gigged (I don't even have a cab as there's no point when I can't transport it from home to gig!). I'm mostly annoyed at the lack of professionalism by the promoter as the other bands that are on that night were also under the assumption that backline would be provided (one band were even told not to bring any gear!). No backline being provided for established bands is understandable as they will often be in a position to afford and transport equipment but when it's a gig that's being put on for local/small/unsigned type bands it's almost a given that these bands can't always afford full gigging equipment. Okay now you've read that the promoter finally replied today simply saying "I'll get another band to supply equipment." But quite frankly I don't really feel comfortable using other bands gear for the same fact I don't feel comfortable other bands using my gear. I certainly don't want to have to allow other bands to use my amp head. Even excluding the fact I don't want to risk other people breaking it, I don't even know if I'll be able to stay in the venue till the other bands are even finished due to bus/train times! Ideally I don't want to cancel the gig as I think we have quite a few people coming but I don't really feel comfortable with the way it's been conducted. What would you do in my situation?
Get the promoter to call this lot http://www.esp-musicrentals.co.uk/
9. Band In A Box makes everything sound like it was recorded on a casiotone keyboard from the eighties. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6rs9jSB7sF8
10. It's a crazy idea...............but it might just work.
11. Go and play at jams. That way you'll network with players in other bands. Get up and play to show you are competent. And make it known that you're happy to dep. Once you've introduced yourself and made some new Facebook friends the dep gigs will start coming in. Oh and say yes to EVERYTHING you're offered!!!
12. If you listen to it with headphones, you can hear a squeak every time Ringo hits his bass drum pedal.
13.
I've never heard a bass solo I like.
This ain't that bad. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blp7hPFaIfU
14.
That is so true, Skank. That's what these people don't realise - being in a band isn't what you think being in a band is going to be like. They want to be in a band, but when they find out what being in a band is like, they don't really want to be in a band any more. Hence the crap attitude. They turn up occasionally (having done no work) just so they can tell their friends they are in a band. For a lot of unintelligent and non-committal people, 'being in a band' is just a concept or a premise or a thought. The actual 'being in a band' bit of 'being in a band' is bloody hard work, and these stupid, workshy, feckless, unreliable, untalented frigging fecking pigs should just stop wasting everyone's time and do us all a favour by fecking off out of it and not coming back! /rant
Yes, I was in a virtual band a couple of years ago. They had the website and the Facebook page but never gigged. I left 2 years ago...........the other members probably even haven't noticed yet.
15. Ahhhh.....it's T Rex's 'Get It On'.
16. I fitted an Eminence, 4 ohm, 450 Watt, Kappa speaker into an Ashdown EB 150 cabinet. It sounds great and is stupidly loud when connected to my 500w Mibass head. Sometimes you just have to experiment.
17. A Jazz, with a J retro pre amp, does the lot. In fact, since I got the J retro, although I still hanker over other basses, I can't really justify buying one.
18. You could fit a vintage style bridge to your present Jazz Bass which allows you to experiment with string spacing. Here's a link http://www.guitarpar...b0RkalZIWnZKSGM
19. Seems pretty dumb to me that you can't rip the CD to mp3 files, when you can save the same album, of mp3 files you bought from amazon or wherever, to your PC, laptop, ipod, phone or tablet, without breaking the law.
20. I usually go 'Dunk' and the sound person says 'thanks that's great'.
21. If it was bought new from a shop, I would send it back for a replacement. If it was 'as new' but secondhand from a private seller, I would keep it, as long as it was a good player and the damage doesn't affect your ability to play it.
22. A bass player I know, has a Blazer with a P/J. He bought it new and added the Jazz pickup sometime in the early 90's. This is him and his bass.
23. There may be a fuse in your amp that has gone. The fuse, in the harmonica player in my band's Fender Bassman, went about a year ago. She didn't have a spare, so decided to wrap it in silver foil, fit it back in the amp, and carry on. It worked, but it could have caused internal damage to the amp (and her) if there was an electrical issue with the amp, which caused the fuse to blow in the first place. She now carries spare fuses to every gig.
24. Hmmmmm.......I assume that makes your two single coil pickups into a big old humbucker. Any sound files to show what that sounds like? I'm assuming it's a bit like a P bass?
