1. The Dana Dixon Band, with yours truly on bass and Evan Jenkins on drums (Matt Schofield Trio). http://theblueskitchen.com/camden/whats-on/atlantic-soul-orchestra-dana-dixon-band-djs-til-3am/
2. Here's a review from a basschatter http://basschat.co.u..._1#entry2290162
3. Given an infinite number of years and an infinite number of gigs, eventually (unless you keep it in a case under your bed forever) you will get a ding in your lovely bass. It just so happened to be the drummer that dinged it and not you. Feel grateful that it was your bass and not your car that got dinged. My guitarist drove his Chelsea tractor into the side of my VW Polo the other day. Luckily it is 14 years old and a bit 'roadworn'. But I had to take a deep breath and be philosophical about it.
4. I think that the adice given on basschat previously, by people better quaified than myself, is that as long as you use your ears you should be fine. If you hear the speaker farting out, turn it down,
5. A Stingray is an expensive, premium, professional, great sounding, instrument. Your amp is entry level and priced for beginners. You could buy 6 TC combos for the price of a new Stingray. If you invest in an amp, that will let you hear you bass accurately at high volume, your problem will be solved.
6. Aha! At last the Barefaced Compact is up for sale! Unfortunately I bought one a couple of months ago Oh well, have a bump on me.
7. My main band don't have a full time drummer. Instead we use a number of drummers picked from a list. How good the band plays, is usually the direct result of how good that nights drummer is. It constantly amazes me, how a excellent drummer can make such a huge difference to the quality of a bands performance. Like the old saying goes, 'Yer only as good as yer drummer'.
8. Buy one when you're there and sell it before you leave. Why? Watch the video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-noSy97fMIk
9.
Seems anything I've recorded using my "regular" studio monitors sounds starkly different when I play it on my home or car stereo. Mainly, I get a loss of mid range and bottom end. What if I used my home stereo as as my studio monitors? I tried it. It works pretty well. I get to hear what my recording sounds like through a typical standard sound system. Has anyone else tried this? Thoughts?
In decent recording studios, they always have a set of standard hi fi speakers, that they can play the final mix through. After all, that's what most people will be listening to the recording on.
10. I remember depping for a band many years ago. As I was setting up, the guitarist asked me what I would like to drink. I said I'd have a coke (I was driving). At the end of the gig I asked the same guy when I was going to get paid. He pointed at, my now empty coke glass, and said 'You've been paid'. They were used to going out gigging and setting up a tab behind the bar. At the end of the night, the band fee would be used to pay off the bar tab. Sometimes the band owed the bar money. That's the definition of a 'Boys Night Out' band. I don't play with 'Boys Night Out' bands any more.
11.
Offtopic: That's Ruaridh. I love his playing. Check out his other band Triptych and Flo
I've seen him with a few bands and I really like the sound of that Vintage bass. I've seen the Dark Jokes a few times playing live on the Mound. Their live sound is better than their recorded stuff (I bought a couple of CDs), which I put down to Ruaridh's bass playing (I think he's quite a recent recruit and not on the CDs) His playing is very tasteful and melodic.
12. heard a guy playing a Vintage V96 and it had a great sound. Very Stingray like. I'm sure you could pick one up cheaply on ebay secondhand. http://www.gear4musi...Gloss-Black/T3X Edit - In fact this was the guy. Great band and the bass player is fantastic, despite the fact he looks about twelve. 13. The screw sizes for Fender bridge saddles aren't consistently the same size (as I have found through trial and error). Sometimes it's easier to just buy a new bridge instead of faffing about trying to find the right size. They're pretty cheap. There's a vintage one going for £12 posted on this very forum.
14. Hartkes are always good sounding amps. And I've never played through a Laney I didn't like. They're usually loud and clean.
15.
Hi there I can't get either posts or PMs to accept a paste from another source e.g. Word docs, web links etc. I have also noticed that if I type at my normal speed half the characters go missing and it takes ages to type anything. I also notice that on occasion the red wavy line in spellchecker hovers under a word and flashes a bit. Very odd.
I had problems, as you describe, with the latest Windows explorer. I just downloaded Mozilla Firefox and used that instead. Problem solved. https://www.mozilla.org/en-GB/
16. They don't need to be able to spell. Cos they're gonna be popstars!
17. These Indonesian made basses are terrific. I had one (my nephew has it now) and it sounded and played great. Have since owned many other 'posher' Jazzes, but frankly ,one of these Squiers is all you really need. Bargain.
18.
Chris and I were talking last Wednesday. He was saying that the body and neck were going off to have the body and headstock sprayed in Fiat "Smooth Mint". I'm popping through to see him on Monday 2nd November.
I have a very nice Jazz bass neck which has had some amateur nut filing done on it (previous owner). I think a new nut and a setup is in order. And Chris's workshop is just down the road
19. Well the best amp I've heard, was a gallien Krueger 15 combo with a USA Precision through it. It sounded really nice on it's own but also great with the band. The bass player who owned it has now gone lightweight. He plays through an Aguilar Tonehammer 500 and an SL112, which is nowhere near as fat sounding as his old rig. I've owned some nice rigs but my present one is an Ashdown MiBass 550, paired with a Barefaced Compact. I think it's the best sound I've ever had (the first gig I played with it a bassist came up to me after the 3rd song and demanded to know what I was playing through, as he liked the sound so much (I noticed he didn't say anything about my playing?).
20. My philosophy is that if you buy a fake Fender, dirt cheap from a Chinese website, and it's a pile of crap, then you should put it down to experience. Have low expectations and you won't be disappointed. Saying that......my brother in law bought a fake Gibson Goldtop Les Paul, for £100, direct from the PRC and it sounds great!
21.
Forgive me if this is a daft question but i have often wondered it especially now we have small class D amps. I appreciate watts is not a good way of measuring volume but think its clear most 500w amps would be louder than 200w regardless of manufacturer. What i am getting at is its generally accepted 500w amps are loud enough for pub gigs without PA support but smaller 200w amps are hit and miss as to whether they are loud enough depending on venue size, genre etc. Therefore why take a gamble and not just buy a 500w amp? My LH500 on level 1 is quiet enough for me to use at home so no need for a 200w amp at home either. May be it just comes down to price but usually a 500w version of a 200w amp is not that more and with class D amps they are all the same size and weight. Be interesting to hear others opinions. 22. The first time it sold for £680, the second time it sold for £421 and who knows how much it will sell for the third time? I smell something fishy. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fender-Jazz-Bass-Guitar-Japan-Reissue-/141822251381?hash=item210543d175:g:sgoAAOSwo6lWIkeu http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/141812009912?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/141804179648?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
23.
They came across very well. For playing a Telecaster guitar there seemed to be a fair amount of heft behind her notes. Does she downtune a bit to achieve this? Couldn't see her amp settings from 200 yards away.
She has two outputs. The EQ on the first is set as for normal guitar, the EQ on the second has the high end removed and the bottom end boosted. When combined, it really gives her guitar a ballsy sound.
24. Hothouse Flowers, at the Barrowlands in Glasvegas, on Friday. Will Lee is playing bass in this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3r7sQkUvJ4
25. Sold a pickguard to Tim. A very smooth transaction.
