1.
I can't and don't want to judge the "best", but if there's one drummer I'd want to play with, my "favourite", it's Bonzo. So powerful, so groovy, always sounds like he's got more time than anyone else, if you know what I mean? Otherwise it's just a list of great drummers
I like his playing but I'd have to hear him playing jazz on a little Gretsch kit before I'd let him join my band With brushes!
 2. I've come to the conclusion that all the bass players I know, who have the best tone, seem to have the highest action on their basses. I know there's a pro US bass player who, not too long ago, joined this forum (and was then chased away by the grumpy regulars). His quote was, 'A low action is the enemy of tone'. Maybe he was right.
 3. I know what you mean. I'd like to be challenged. But the musicians I know are all breadheads. They're happy wallowing in their rut as long as they get paid. If I have to play Bad Moon Rising again, I think I might go postal.
 4. I notice it has no low mid EQ knob. I like a bit of low mid.
 5. I notice, from the specs on the Barefaced website, that your cab can take an amp that puts out up to 1200 watts. So I think you should buy this http://www.thomann.d...n_m_bv1001m.htm 2000 watts should keep your drummer in his place. And you can report back to Basschat, if it's any good......and then we can all go out and buy one. Edit: Or maybe not? http://basschat.co.uk/topic/251292-bugera-veyron-bv1001m/page__st__90__p__2931488__hl__bugera__fromsearch__1#entry2931488
 6.
Doubles as a practice amp and a gigging amp then.
Yup
 7. I would recommend a Fender Rumble 100 V3. They are as small as an average practice amp, insanely light (you can pick them up with a finger), and loud. I've played a gig through one and it dealt fine with the volume of a moderately loud drummer. Having never played through a Markbass 801, I can't comment.
 8. I had to learn 34 songs in a week not that long ago. Youtube was my friend. It took many hours and I admit I had to write out cheat sheets. But in the end I managed to learn them up to a reasonable level and the gig went well. All except for a David Bowie track that the guitarist gave me the wrong key for. It was impossible to transpose it on the sly, so I just turned my volume down, smiled and mimed playing it. I'm pretty sure 99% of the audience didn't even notice there was no bass in the mix.
 9.
Here's my "White Album" as a cracking single album...
1. "Back in the U.S.S.R." (McCartney)

2. 11.
If you see that lad again please advise him not to try it if he's ever up in Glasgow!
Or Edinburgh. I have witnessed the consequences of a spilt pint, due to an over exuberant mosher at an Edinburgh rock night.
 12. Bass wood is cool. I have a MIJ, Silver Series Squier Jazz Bass it as tough as any other bass I've owned and has a great sound.
 13.
Been offered some Nordstrands so probably them. Are the Entwistle JBXN's any good too? Seem quite cheap?
I have the same problem with my Jazz and was thinking about fitting an Entwistle neodymium pickup. I've heard they have a very high output.
 14. Clip on tuners can be hit and miss for basses. I was given a tuner, by my brother in law, who raved about it (he's a guitarist). It couldn't tune my bass to save it's life and ended up being given away. Snarks on the other hand are great for bass, but their scrawny, swiveling, necks tend to snap off in gig bags. I've had an Intelli clip on tuner for a a few years now. They're tough and are pretty good at picking up low frequencies. I recommend them.
 15.
The Rumble 100 is looking more of a steal at only £220. The 200 is significantly more expensive, but still within my budget.
The rule is to always go for as many watts as you can afford. The good thing about the new Fender rumbles (they are the ones with the retro look, silver cloth grills) is that they aren't expensive, sound good and are incredibly light. I've played in a venue that had the rumble 100 and was heard ok, but my band is not particularly loud. With a loud drummer and an egomaniac guitarist I think the 200 watt rumble would be a better bet. The whole series are INCREDIBLY light so don't worry about having to lug a big heavy box around.
 16. Charvel Jackson basses sound fantastic! I bought one from a friend, back in the 90s, as an 'emergency bass' when my own bass got stolen. It sounded fantastic but I got rid of it, merely because of the pointy headstock (which frankly, at the time, just wasn't my style). The other day (20 years later) I saw exactly the same model going for sale, down the road from me, at the measly price of £160. Such a great sounding bass at a bargain price. But did I buy it? Nooooooo! I couldn't bring myself to do it because of that pointy headstock. I'm so shallow..... This is it. If you aren't put off by pointy headstocks this is a total bargain https://www.gumtree.com/p/guitar-instrument/charvel-bass-guitar-made-in-japan-1986/1157634743
 17. I've seen Mexican Squiers that have a headstock like that but not Japanese.
 18.
Don't wait till you think you're good enough to join a band before you join a band.

"Play what the song needs and not what you want or can play" was a good piece of advice i got years ago. "always look as though you know what you are doing" "if you look confident when playing then even a mistake will pass unnoticed by an audience" Dave

If you mess up, tell people you play a lot of jazz.
All very good advice.
 19. They're great! I have one in my Jazz. Most of the venues I play provide a backline. So instead of playing about with the EQ of an unfamiliar amp, I just set everything at flat and use the retro to get my sound. It will give your Mex Jazz a whole new lease of life.
 20. Awwww.....my old amp....sigh.
 21. I've played through a 100w version a few times, at a venue my band regularly play at. It's pretty loud and incredibly light. I played through the 500w combo (at low volumes) and it was almost as light as the 100w version (ie you can pick it up with one finger type of light).
 22. Stratosphere sell secondhand bass parts. Who knows where they get them from? But one thing's for sure, they will be making a profit or they wouldn't be selling them.
 23. I've chopped and changed the pickups in my Precision and now have Fender custom shop pickups, that cost me about £100. I've tried el cheapo Squiers, vintage 1970's Seymour Duncans and now the CS jobs, But frankly, nobody can hear the difference except me. Recorded, the custom shop ones sound a bit wider in the mix (if you know what I mean?) but playing with a band there is no discernible difference.
