Does it have HEFT? -
Most of the time you are at the mercy of the sound guy, whether you go straight through a DI box or go post EQ on your amp. If you like the 'front of house sound' you have (if you ever get the chance to hear it from the stalls) there's no point worrying about post or pre EQ really.

Hmmmmmm......I saw that Tokai on Facebook. I assumed it was an early one due to the logo and the Fender like headstock. The newer ones have slightly different shaped headstocks like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Excellent-Tokai-Jazz-Bass-AJB-70-MIJ-150411-/231707819252?hash=item35f2dcbcf4:g:Y-YAAOSwstxVKREj

Matt Bissonette - Elton John's Bass Player.
gjones replied to bluesparky's topic in General Discussion
Were you touring with Elton when Dave Paton was playing bass? -
Alternatively if you're good with a soldering iron https://www.talkbass.com/threads/sterling-by-music-man-sub-ray4-and-ray5.871370/page-17#post-13351594
I have one of these. How would I set it up to nullify the hot preamp?
Set the signal level at the lowest on the pedal (and the drive down low if you have a bd21) and your volume on the bass at full. Then slowly increase the level until the amp starts to clip, then reduce the level on the pedal just a bit so that even when you're digging in the amp no longer clips. Then use the master on your amp to increase and decrease the volume. Experiment with different settings and as soon as your amp starts to clip, turn the level on the pedal down a bit. Of course I don't know what type of amp you have but you should be able to get a loud, clean, sound this way with most amplifiers.

Turn off your neck pickup and use just the Jazz pickup at the bridge with the bass turned up high. You'll get that punchy, in your face, upfront sound.
-
How about a pre amp between the bass and your Ashdown. Something like a Behringer BD21, which has a level control which would decease the signal going to your amp. That would do the trick. BD21s are very cheap and are great little pre amps but any pedal with a level control should sort your problem out.

The Soul Sonics (bigyouth) - Live Photos & video in Lyon FRANCE
gjones replied to bigyouth's topic in Live photos & videos
Very nice. Nice bass too. -
I've seen Bombscare play live. They sure do put a lot of effort into it. Really good, fun, band. I have a feeling that if this show continues for another couple of series, that quite a few excellent bands will be 'discovered'. We all know of really, great, local bands who take their music really seriously but can't commit to doing it full time, due to work or family commitments.

Refused to gig last night - being unreasonable?
gjones replied to BNB71's topic in General Discussion
If it was a paid gig, I would grit my teeth and do it. If there was a decent sized audience who were looking forward to the gig, I'd do it. But when there's no money and no interest shown in whether you play or not, by the promoter, the bar staff or the punters, I'd walk. -
Does this Fender look dodgy to you?
In over 35 years of driving I've never had a car broken into. I'm careful to always leave anything inside out of sight but even so, if there were hordes of wandering thieves breaking into cars on the off-chance then I'd expect to have been 'done' at least once in all that time. Perhaps I've just been lucky or don't frequent dodgy areas but that's my experience.
Criminals tend to go thieving in 'nice' areas. Because that's where the good stuff is.

I never leave my bass in my car. Once bitten, twice shy.

I have a GK MB500 and phew it's LOUD! Punchy as hell as well. My old Ashdown MiBass 550 sounded good through my compact but the GK takes things to another level. The combination of the MB500 and compact means I can hear every note, clearly and well defined. I love it.

I had a similiar problem with my Jazz. I'd resoldered the wires from one of the pickups incorrectly and it had caused the pickups to be out of phase. I swapped them around and the problem was solved. If that isn't your problem, then just Buy a KiOgon wiring loom, with a blend pot instead of the second volume pot and you'll never have to bother with any of that pesky soldering ever again. What about a headless bass like a Hohner. I have a friend who has one and in a band situation it sounds fine and weighs next to nothing. http://www.iguitarmag.com/magazine-editions/guitar-interactive-issue-22/reviews/hohner-b2-headless-bass/

I have had the operation on my left hand and it went extremely smoothly. I was hoping, at some time in the future, to get the right operated on too. I have great sympathy for you and hopefully it's just inflammation and it will get better soon.

Something has been chewing on the headstock?

I've been told, by BBC engineers, that decent live sound engineers are a bit thin on the ground at the BEEB. Live sound on TV is usually pretty sh*t. The senior, sound engineers may be able to get a good sound on Newsnight but they haven't got the experience to record a live gig well. Occasionally, somebody who knows what they're doing, will go back at a later date and remix it.Which is why, the iPlayer versions of live music, usually sounds better than the original live feed.

Replacing road worn jazz pick ups... Which ones to get?!
gjones replied to lastanthem88's topic in Accessories and Misc
Ok so I have a beautiful road worn jazz. It plays amazingly well. However, my dep in our wedding band has an American deluxe jazz with active pups... And although in my opinion it doesn't play as well, the sound in active mode is really good, very versatile. Is it worth changing? Any thing I should be aware of first? Any ideas on potential pups to put in? Thanks!!
I have a Jazz Bass with a set of roadworn pickups in it. Without a preamp it sounds great, with a preamp (a John East J-retro) it sounds amazing and is incredibly versatile.. A change of pickups won't make your passive bass sound like an active one. I recommend getting a J-retro and your friend with the deluxe Jazz will envy your sound. This is the retro for a deluxe bass but the EQ is the same for the standard Jazz Bass version. and this is the standard version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32j6CI5S0Oo -
Klotz are a good brand. I've had my Klotz leads for over 5 years. I gig 70 to 100 times a year and they've never let me down. Keep well away from fender. They are seriously crap.

How much do pub gigs pay around the country?
gjones replied to rungles's topic in General Discussion
The pub chains that ask for an invoice and pay from their head office, pay much better up here in Edinburgh (around £300 per band). The pubs that pay cash in hand usually pay much less (around £150). My theory is that the bar manager is given a budget and if he/she can pay the bands less than the budget, then he/she can keep the rest for themselves. There's less chance to fiddle, when the bands are being paid straight from head office.
