are there any super bands with poor bass players?
gjones replied to iconic's topic in General Discussion
Poor bass player, though..? Hmm...
Good enough to play down the 'Dog & Duck' on a Saturday. But good enough to be playing with Jimi Hendrix? Other bands weren't exactly knocking his door down, asking him to play bass for them, after he left Jimi. John Mayer often plays Jimi Hendrix covers live, with Pino Pallidino playing bass. Listen to the bass on the solo. Now that's how it should be done. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-uSnRVy0Fs -

Jimi Hendrix's Bass player, Noel Redding. He was a guitarist and just happened to be in the right place at the right time. -
Motley Crue? I also remember some band somewhere that had to re-record all the bass parts laid down by the original bass player because they were so bad. I think it might have been a Trevor Horn produced track...was it Frankie Goes To Hollywood?
The blockheads played many of the rhythm tracks for FGTH. -
"Seriously?".. albums you like, but you're flying solo...

Probably this. It's the first album I ever owned (cassette for 12th birthday, thanks Sis). It's from his lost decade period. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ifhkMOXgP3E -
Played with some new guys at a new (to me) rehearsal room last night, and guess what: there, lurking in the corner was the supplied bass rig, an Ampeg 8x10 with an Ampeg amp perched on the top. Stupidly, I didn't look at the amp model number. Set it all flat, plugged in my trusty Hot Rod P, and away I went. Oh My Dear Lord, what a sound. I have never had the opportunity to play through one of these before, but did I say - Oh My Dear Lord what a sound. I play mostly smallish pub gigs with my Barefaced Compact and LM3, which is plenty. But.......I am wandering around at work thinking "can I fit it in my car? Would it be that outrageous to turn up with it? Can I actually lift an SVT and plonk it on the top at my age?" not to mention how to sneak (!) it into the house (disguised as a fridge, perhaps?). Can anybody help me?
I played through an SVT head at a studio recently. I tried to pick it up but it appeared to have been screwed to the cabinet for some reason? P.S. I later found out it wasn't screwed to the cabinet......it weighed 6 stone.
Over the years i have experienced all of the positives and negatives of playing at high volume, i agree that we need to be as loud as our drummer but really i have to say that time and time again the real culprit behind any problems with progressive raising volume and it being too much is always the GUITAR PLAYER... they are always turning up and up after being bollocked by the soundman at soundcheck for being too loud... still they claim they cant hear themselves
Put their amp 2 feet from their head. It usually has the required effect.

I've noticed that when people have paid for tickets, they are usually respectful of the music and are quiet. This allows music at relatively low volume to be heard. On the other hand when people have not paid for tickets, they tend to talk over the music and you need to play at a decent volume to be noticed.

Fotoflame MIJ fender P bass going cheap. Not my cup of tea but a good bass nonetheless. I bet their rider stipulates that there has to be half a dozen bottles of Grecian 2000 in their dressing room at every gig. Simon still can't sing in tune.
-
Best to go into a shop and try out a few different types of basses. You'll hear the differences with your own ears.

A vintage or Squier bass and an Ashdown EB 150 combo, would leave you change for 10 pints and a curry. Perfectly useable gear for an average pub gig.

I've bought a Japanese Squier... but what exactly?
gjones replied to JonnyScaramanga's topic in Bass Guitars
I would send it back and get a refund. The seller lied in order to get a higher price. It's a nice bass but not worth £405 in today's market. You can then keep an eye out for another on Basschat, which will be for sale at about half of what you paid. -
Thanks for the info. I knew I'd overpaid but I was hoping it was worth over £300. Ah well, my own fault. I think the 1993/94 date I found was for a Japanese Fender, not a Squier. How do I date a Squier, other than guessing? I didn't buy it from that numpty, gjones, but I suspect my seller was similarly full of it. He claims it's an alder body. Is there a way to check? Neck pocket, perhaps? I want to know if the advert was misleading. Is it actually a silver series or not? It arrives tomorrow, so then I'll know the full extent of my foolishness.
No, it's not a Silver Series but I wouldn't worry too much about that. All Japanese basses are very good quality instruments. Japanese Squiers of that period were usually made of basswood not alder. The neck pocket, or the routing for pickups or controls, will probably have some bare wood on show. Basswood is a closely grained wood, so there won't be much, if any, grain showing. There's a few articles on silver series basses and guitars on the internet. -

By the way, please tell me you didn't buy it from this numpty! His whole selling speil is utter bullshit http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SQUIER-by-FENDER-Silver-Series-Jazz-Bass-USA-Accessories-CUSTOM-COLOUR-VGC-/262087208146?hash=item3d059d6cd2 -

gjones replied to JonnyScaramanga's topic in Bass Guitars
After manufacture of Squiers went from Japan to Korea the quality suffered. The Korean basses used cheaper hardware and laminated plywood bodies. In order to compete with the Fender copies of the time and give the Squier brand a bit more kudos, Fender returned production to Japan and started to manufacture an up market brand of Squier called 'The Silver Series' . The Silver series that I have seen (and I've owned two) all had 'Silver Series' in small black script at the end of the headstock. They were manufactured between 1992 and 1994. The Jazz and Precision Silver Squiers all had 40mm nuts. Which are wide for a Jazz and narrow for a Precision. Your bass was manufactured, according to the serial number, in 1994. so it might not be a 'Silver Series' but it was made in Japan, so will still an excellent bass. As far as cost goes? The early nineties, Japanese, Precision Squiers, rarely go for more than about £250 on Ebay or Basschat. So you didn't exactly get a bargain but you did get a really nice 20 year old bass. -
I thought I recognised that verbal diarrhoea. Here's his Silver Squier for sale. He's asking about £150 more than it's worth. I think it's just a MIJ neck bolted to a 'who knows what' body. Silver Squiers all had a brass earthing strip from the bridge to the rear pickup, this one doesn't. Which means it will either buzz like crazy or it's not a Squier. A Korean Fender is probably not a collectors item either. "You're only as good as your drummer" re-visited
gjones replied to Happy Jack's topic in General Discussion
'YOU' as in 'The bass player', is only as good as your drummer. If your drummer can't find the groove, then you won't be able to find it either. -
Gigging is a funny thing. The money is not great (usually) and I don't really like my fellow band members (singer and guitarist are married and are both Narcissistic sociopaths). The drummer has some kind of serious, paranoid, mental health issue (which he takes all sorts of heavy duty meds for) and is crazier than a box of frogs. I wouldn't want to socialise with any of them outside the band. But we make such a great racket together and I really enjoy the gigs. As soon as we finish though I take the cash and am outta that door like a rat up a drainpipe. P.S. An interesting topic to discuss might be, 'Basschatters who are in bands, where they dislike their fellow band members, but stay in the band because they really like the music they play'.

How many bassists does it take to change a light bulb?
gjones replied to Owen's topic in General Discussion
None, the keyboard player will do it with their left hand https://www.youtube....h?v=LHx3DGm0cEw I wish I could embed.
He's good, when he's just playing simple backing chords on the keyboard but as soon as he starts something a bit more syncopated, he's back to playing roots. He is no replacement for a good bass player. -
Pre-drilled holes for neck in body are wonky!
gjones replied to cameltoe's topic in Repairs and Technical
Hi, Picked up a J body, in basswood. It's actually fairly decent, but they've completely lashed up drilling the neck holes in the body, to the point where it won't even accept a neck plate with all 4 screws (without trying to fit neck, just trying to get all 4 screws through the body!) Needless to say, it doesn't line up with the neck I'm planning to use. In fact none of the holes individually line up with any of the holes in the neck. Now, if the holes in the body had been fairly square, but they just didn't line up with the neck holes, I'd have filled the neck holes and re drilled the neck, but in this instance I'm going to have to redrill the body holes. I'm planning to dowel, glue and fill the holes before redrilling but my question is- will I need to also redrill the neck holes, or is there a way I can measure where the body holes need to be, so I can avoid this? The neck is genuine fender and all 4 holes are straight and true, but I can't figure out how to work out where the new holes in the body would need to be positioned to line up with them. Am I just going to have to do the neck as well? Thanks in advance
Do you have a real Fender body that you can get the exact measurements from? You only need to know how far, in mm, the neck plate should be from the sides of the neck pocket. The back plate will act as template for the holes. On my Jazz bass the neck plate is situated 5mm in from the bottom side of the neck plate (the lower horn side) and 7mm from the neck side (the side the neck joins the body from). Hope this helps. -
Who does this guy think he's kidding? Nice bass but worth £250 max. And I don't even think the body is original. Because the silver series basses used to have a grounding strip from the bridge to the bridge pickup like the original 62s. Those machine heads look suspiciously new too. After all, this is supposed to be a 20 something year old bass http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SQUIER-by-FENDER-Silver-Series-Jazz-Bass-USA-Accessories-CUSTOM-COLOUR-VGC-/262077066206?hash=item3d0502abde

Poll, how many many basses have you got?
gjones replied to PaulWarning's topic in General Discussion
when I first joined BC, I realised that I had the opportunity to try out a lot of basses without losing any money. So I bought and sold many, many basses. I ended up trying them out and moving them on for what I paid for them. I ended up keeping a Jazz and Precision. And they cover most of the styles of music I play. -
Gigging (mostly weddings & functions) has enabled me to reduce my day job from 5 to 4 days...and next years calendar is filling up too! Plus excess wedding food leftovers often means the fridge is never empty - especially for cheese - what's not to like?
'I do it for the cheese'.....I like it.
