1. If it's not your bread and butter and If you don't need the money, then it's time to go your own way. Amateur bands are supposed to be fun and if they've become a drag, it's best to find your fun elsewhere. Give the band plenty of notice and go on to pastures new.
2. I'm only interested in bands with a serious attitude to music making. I'm not interested in hobby bands. I don't care if the band makes zero money from playing but I do insist on a professional attitude from all members. Which means regular rehearsals and gigs. Pretend bands aren't my thing.
3. As long as the cash is ok there's no problem. If you get the cash and hand the amp over, then your part of the deal is over. Take a deep breath aaaaaaaaand........relax.
4. Ed Friedland does a P bass comparison. What he finds is that a P bass sounds like a P bass, whatever make or model. A Squier will sound just as good, within the mix, as a Pino Pallidino custom shop model in the hands of somebody who can play it properly. 5. Of course there was the odd drummer that didn't like me.
6. I've never met a drummer I didn't like.
7. Since I fitted a J retro to my Jazz, I can't justify getting another bass. I have my Jazz and my P bass in reserve and they are all I really need. But it doesn't stop me looking.........
8.
I was in Edinburgh overnight last night, in a hotel on the Grassmarket, where from the 17th Dec, they have a 5 a.m. Licence! It was like the zombie apocalypse outside my window at 0500, with people staggering about, incoherent and drooling.
Welcome to Edinburgh. We have a zombie apocalypse every weekend. The level of drunkenness that the Scottish population can achieve on a 'night oot' can be disturbing to non Scots. It's disturbing to me......and I'm Scottish.
9. That's capitalism for you.
10. Could you tell me if your neck has got a maple or rosewood fretboard?
11. The first one, is the one your average non bassist song writer would probably imagine the bass line would be, i.e. effective but a bit boring for a bass player to actually play. The second last one I like a lot but the drummer would have to follow it with the bass drum. Like Bryan Ferry's 'Don't Stop The Dance'.
12. I've never had a string break on me but figure I could play just as well on 3, as I can with 4.
13. My niece's band played SXSW this year and I sent her these links to make sure her manager had obtained the right visas. It's not always a simple process. http://www.theguardi...a-problems-sxsw and http://louderthanwar...the-usa-a-blog/
14.
Show me a genre of music without a stingray being used and I'll take that seriously
Rockabilly?
15. A lot of people I play with have tablets on a stand. It's slightly less intrusive than bits of paper you have to leaf through.
16. Lou Martin played with my band, many a time, after he moved to Edinburgh. He was a real gent. He liked a glass or two or red did Lou. Sadly no longer with us.
17.
While not without a sense of humour, I don't really see a need for such sarcasm when asking a perfectly straightforward question. Weight is an issue, potential theft is an issue, insurance is an issue. Dummy is the way to go.
If you put a after it it's not sarcasm. This is sarcasm http://www.gumtree.com/p/other-guitar-accessories/portable-guitar-amp-marshall-ms-4-battery-or-mains-powered/1091409986
18. I have a cunning plan. Why not just rent a real one and turn the volume down to 0? It's radical but I think it might just work
19. Melanie seems to live in Australia and also sells huskies as well as bass guitars http://www.truebuy.com.au/for-sale/animals/husky-puppies-for-adoption_i5566
20. The guy playing the bassline in this live video doesn't bother changing key for much of the verse and chorus. And for much of the song he's not playing octaves. And when he does he's pretty sloppy.
21. I have a bid on a 5 string on ebay at the moment. I've been playing bass 30 years and have never owned one yet. I think it's about time I did.
22. I make an effort when making an effort is merited. If I'm playing 'the dog n duck' I don't. If I'm playing a gig, where the audience has paid £20 a head to see the band, I make an effort.
23. There's one at my local venue. It's going through an Ampeg SVT classic 410HE. I play through it 4 or 5 times a month and it sounds fantastic. Considering it gets played continuously for about 6 hrs a night it seems pretty reliable. But, although I'd love to buy one, all the scare stories on bass forums have put me off.
24. Put your cab up on a chair/table whatever so it's nearer your ears. No use having your bass flapping your trousers, your ears aren't on your knees.
25. I went to a gig at The Festival Theatre, in Edinburgh, a couple of years ago. It's a 2,000 seater and it was full. The overall sound was shockingly bad (the sound engineer took until the 3rd song to realise that he'd muted the snare) but the bass sounded excellent. The bass player was a friend of mine, who plays a Musicman Sterling with 5 year old roundwounds on it, and wherever he plays he always gets a great sound (however bad the rest of the sound mix is). He uses a lot of mid, which isn't a great tone on it's own, but when playing with a band it always stands out in the mix.
