  1. Incoming NBD... an itch I couldn't resist scratching, but I fear I might regret it...

I'll post an NBD when it arrives... a Status update, as it were ;)

      Not a Stealthy update then?

  2. Joy: realising that Crich Tramway Museum is only half an hour down the road from my holiday let. :D

Heartbreak: finding that yesterday was its last open day this year. :(

I looked up the Heights of Abraham earlier... guess what, they closed for the year on Sunday too

Today, had a lovely walk round the Derwent reservoirs. Tomorrow, it's off to Manchester on the train to visit the Science and Industry Museum.

Starting to think I'm cursed :(

Ok, so we took a trip to the MoSI today... I particularly wanted to see the old station & goods shed, and the aerospace building.

Yup, you guessed it. Both exhibits are closed.

      FFS.

Lovely spot Rich, I'm only 40 minutes away but rarely go.  Try and take in Chatsworth if you've not been before

  3. Just been told by HMRC that I paid too little tax in the last tax year. Great. As if money wasn't tight enough already, now I've got to find an extra 30p a month to give them. :(

    1. martthebass

      martthebass

I've been hit with that for the last couple of years.....never makes sense to me as I only worked for a single company and they did the figures.  Robbing barstewards....

    2. StuartB

      StuartB

Do you have a way to double check the figures with a professional? The HMRC are not always right.

  4. Just fitted some shiny new Gotoh GB707 tuners to the Spector, replacing the cheapy no-names that were on there... oh my word, they are lovely.

YUMMYYY!!!!! I MUCH prefer the look versus the smaller, weedy looking posts.  I recently dropped a set of res-o-lites I found cheap online on a Peavey Cirrus and they have similarly made a huge improvement. Gotoh definitely make my favourite tuning keys!

  5. Just lost a tiny bit of weight... ganglion removed from left middle digit. Had it years but it was becoming a real pain in the arse. Finger. Whatever.

You had a ganglion on your ärse finger? Bummer. :D

      Wishing you a speedy recovery.

    4. BillyBass

      BillyBass

I have a ganglion in my right hand, just underneath my little fingers.  It used to flare up when I (an electrician) rewired properties and used my SDS hammer drill to chisel out chases in brick for cables.  I would get pain up my arm for several days afterwards and it would stop me sleeping.

Most of my work these days involves inspection and testing, with a lot less 'house bashing' so now it's not noticeable but its not gone away.

Hope you recover from your surgery quickly.

  6. Just resurrected my old mic stand (and when I say 'old', it still bears the name of a band I was in that split in 1988). Very rusty and creaky, but after disassembly an overnight soak in white vinegar and a clean-up with wire wool soon got rid of the rust on the adjusting bits, and with a bit of silicon WD spray here and there it's as good as... well, not good as new, but it's got a new lease of life.

    1. martthebass

      martthebass

Just retired my old mic stand to the bin.  Can't complain, it probably did 400 gigs plus with me....what surprised me is it's replacement weighed about half as much.

  7. Just scored a Spector Q4 on eBay for £102.

    Result.

    3. Rich

      Rich

@Marc S to answer your question, yes it sounds faaaar more expensive than 102 quid. Really superb tone... smooth lows and crisp glassy highs, and lots of power. I still can't believe my luck, a Spector for the price of an Encore.

      Marc S

      Nice @Rich

They do look good, as I said.

Its great when something like this happens. Result indeed

  8. Just started a week's holiday in Buxton. Staying in a gorgeous apartment in the town centre. It has a beautiful kitchen, wifi, and a pool table.

I don't care if it rains all week. *contented sigh*

Stayed not too far in the summer, while I was grafting for a week in Jon Shuker's workshop! Nice part of the country.

  9. Like an absolute idiot, I sold my Novation K Station a while back because I wasn't using it. Now, of course, I could really really do with it. Twerp. *slaps self*

And predictably, they're now selling for twice what I let mine go for.

    *slaps self again*

      @jezzaboyhas it spot on.

Just how predictable are we? :)

  10. Listening to The Beat's "Ranking Full Stop" with a view to working it into the ska band's set. It's never struck me before just how much the lyric sounds like "ranking foolscap"...

  11. Mario at Il Bottelino's. Xi at the Golden Horse. Janet at The Old Farmhouse. Thus concludes today's waiters update.

  12. My bandmate's old A/B switch died at our gig the other night. I said I'd take a look at it for him... just took it apart, and two of the three jack sockets fell apart in my hands

      plankspanker

      How topical!

Yesterday I bought my first ever five string (used) and although it's generally in good nick the jack socket is dodgy. I've taken it out and cleaned with WD40 and a rag but I later found that although it was fine with the cable I was using my Xvive transmitter doesn't like it at all.

Where's a good place to get replacement sockets? Strings Direct do a Pure Tone Full Contact one that looks pretty good and I have one in my basket atm but any other suggestions?

    3. Rich

      Rich

@plankspanker I get most of my electronics components from Bitsbox - they have Neutrik and Switchcraft jacks amongst others.

    4. Rich

      Rich

All sorted now... new jacks, new switch, totally rewired... the only original thing left is the enclosure. It's Trigger's broom

I know someone that waited the best part of 2 years to finally get away with his girlfriend, a couple of days after landing, she got food poisoning and they had to come home early.

Yup, she won't be going by air again, not for a very long time.

The Eurostar can get you to Rotterdam now, which is close enough, and although they've had issues too, you're only talking about a couple of hours delay, not a whole day and ultimately a cancelation after all that torture.

I've got to go to Italy again next year, for my stepson's wedding... got to say I am really really tempted to drive, via the ferry. I know it's a hell of a long way, but I think it'd be nice. Spread it over three days or so, take a leisurely route maybe. A whole load better than flying, that's for certain.

    4. mowf

      mowf

I think airlines are like couriers and car hire companies. I've had to use them a fair bit and if I blacklisted all the ones I've had bad experiences with, there wouldn't be many left!

  18. New culinary discovery... kabsah spice. Made a fabulous chicken dish last night using it.

Ingredients seem to differ, the one I went for is:

Black Pepper, Cloves, Cardamom, Saffron, Black Lime, Bay Leaves, Nutmeg.

      Should be nice.

    4. Rich

      Rich

Sounds broadly similar to mine. The cloves, cardamom and nutmeg are incredibly aromatic. Mine has turmeric rather than saffron.

I think it's still OK on that part of the plate. It always used to be anyway... I guess I'll find out at the MOT

The letters and numbers are all the correct font, height, spacing etc. It's exactly the same as the old plate except for the clef in place of the stars.

    3. hiram.k.hackenbacker

      hiram.k.hackenbacker

I’m afraid it’s not @Rich. To be fair, there are thousands of plates that fall much further outside of the rules, so I probably wouldn’t worry too much about it. At least ANPR will be able to read your registration number (should it be stolen etc).

    4. Rich

      Rich

Yes, there's no way I was going to do anything daft with the actual reg number, it's asking for trouble. As I said, it's identical to the old plate apart from the clef instead of the stars and UK instead of GB. I've still got the old plates just in case I need to put them back on in a hurry. I can't see that happening though (he said hopefully).

  20. Note to self: in future, never ever ever get a Covid booster and a flu jab at the same time or in the same arm. Ouch, and moreover, ugh. 🤕😷

      SpondonBassed

One shot in each arm here too.  Slight ache in the pfizer arm but otherwise fine.  I've not heard of anyone else taking them both in the one arm.

    4. Rumple

      Rumple

I had the option of both in the one arm at least an inch apart.

  21. Now here's something I never imagined happening... actually considering going back to a 4 as my main gigging weapon. I love my 5s but I just fancy a change.

I only have the one fiver these days. But having recently bought a decent Mustang, my long scales have been feeling unloved and have cause to feel twitchy about their long term status.

I’ve  gone back to 4s for some time now, since re-emerging from just about giving up.

I like it. Simplicity and I’ve not needed a 5 in the band environment or when practicing.

I used to view a 5 string as the ‘standard’.

  22. NSBD (New Skirting Board Day). 6 lengths delivered, and I've just realised quite how long 4.4 metres is... O.o
