1. The "traditional" order is: Wah - Dirt - Modulation - Delay/Reverb Where you put things like compressors and limiters depends on what you want them to do. Personally I put them first. However, there are absolutely no rules and you should try out different things to see what you like. Wah before distortion and wah after distortion both sound very different.
2. Certainly an interesting look! Wish more basses had a thumbrest like that
3. If I were you I'd make moves to sell it, but I'd be in no rush to do so. Its a really, really bad time to sell just now so unless you need the cash immediately then put it in a case and stash it under your bed or at the back of a wardrobe or something for 6 months. If you don't miss it, then sell it. If you do, then play it
4. One other thing, which is perhaps obvious, is to make sure you exercise quality control. It only takes one dire band to kill a whole gig, and unfortunately there are a lot of really dire bands out there. Although the nature of the night means you won't be paying, that doesn't mean you should not be picky about who you give slots to!
5. The really, really, really important thing to consider when you do stuff like this is to make sure that the nights have a well defined genre/theme/style. With my (originals) band we've done too many gigs where its a guy with an acoustic guitar, then a heavy metal band, then three guys with synths and a drum machine, then an indie rock band. The end result is that people turn up to watch their mates and then leave. To make nights like this a long term success you need to structure the event so that people will enjoy most of the acts and will consider turning up week after week just because they want to hear that kind of music. You're trying to build a community, really, and thats hard enough to do without trying to be all things to all men.
6. A friend of mine from school / youth jazz orchestras studied jazz on double bass at Birmingham Conservatoire and now makes a living as a gigging/recording bassist. Last time I heard from him he was in New York and was doing well for himself. Obviously thats a very unscientific sample of one (very talented) individual!
7. I'm not really a big fan of slogan tshirts but my wife made me a cool one that has a graphic eq on it and the phrase "aim low: play bass".
8. Use the "Site:" feature of google. Precede your query with site: if you know you want your answer from within a specific site or type of site (.org, .edu). 9. Does your band have a PA? If so, get yourself a DI box or something like a Behringer BDI21 and go straight into the PA. Works great.
10.
Just poor workmanship on instruments. You dont get one of violins.
That is at least in part because fretless instruments have considerable leeway when it comes to intonation.
11.
Ah poo, I just bought the CD, spose I`ll just have to keep playing the same track then.

Don't forget that Mr Mars also penned 'Forget You' by Cee-Lo Green which also has a killer bass line! The man know how to write a hit, that's for sure.
Didn't know that was him. Thats also a great song.
12. Locked Out Of Heaven is a fantastic tune. Everything else I've heard by him has been utter tosh, sadly.
13. I really, really, really want to like those but there's something about them thats just not right.
14. I reckon you could have a lot of fun with "Out Of Space" by the Prodigy...
15. A mate of mine had a Boss overdrive that got sent back to Boss twice because it didn't work. Twice they sent it back saying "its fine". Eventually he realised he'd been consistently plugging the guitar into the output and the amp into the input
16.
How much are the fees? Are we talking the £20 for selling stuff, or are there more fees to pay for certain services in the forum? I mean, if we are talking twenty quid to sell a £300 item, should people really get upset? The fee is clearly stated if you want to sell.If you are unhappy about the fee, then ebay is an option. Some people contribute without selling.I am not sure how much it costs, but i am sure there are certain costs to run a website such as this. You get free membership for most things. If people are getting upset about £20 for selling, then i would be surprised personally. A lot of forums, you have to pay too get anything out of it.
I'm not talking about whether or not the fees are correct. All I'm saying is that people's attitudes towards a "paid service" are different than they are towards a totally free site. Even if only subconciously.
17. Maybe its just me, but I don't recognise any of these practise rooms or venues that many of you are describing. Practice rooms round here have decent gear and look after it. If they didn't, people wouldn't use them. Personally, as a bass player---and given what I've said above---I don't ever take my own amplification to a rehearsal. I don't use lots of effects, and, in a small rehearsal room, once the guitarist and drummer get going one bass amp sounds much the same as another bass amp. Carting my own amp in would be a waste of time. Sure, for a gig where you're worried about FoH sound and you want the best sound quality for your audience then use your own gear, but for practising? No need, unless you're doing something very effects driven or perhaps if you're in a small jazz/funk group where there is less going on elsewhere. I can't help but feel that lots of folks are just a little too precious about their gear. "I need to get MY sound"...but wander over to youtube and you'll see hundreds of videos of guys like Wooten, Satriani, Marcus Miller etc playing through any old amp at clinics and roadshows and they still sound exactly like themselves. A slightly differently voiced amp at a rehearsal 'aint going to kill you.
18. This forum has about 90% less agro than any other I post on. Debate causes argument. Its inevitable. We can't all agree on everything. If you find yourself getting annoyed, just leave the thread. If you find that certain posters consistently wind you up, use the ignore function. Part of me wonders whether the increased vocalisation of displeasure has to do with the introduction of fees (even if that displeasure has nothing to do with the marketplace). Once money became involved the relationship between poster and forum changed a little bit---subconsciously at least people might now see themselves as a "customer", with all the expectations and so-on that that brings. I know that attitudes among students have changed since the introduction of tuition fees---there is an expectation among many that Universities will get them a degree regardless of how they perform, because they've "paid for it", despite that clearly not being the deal.
19. I've long thought "The Simians" would make a great name for a band.
20. I think Nile Rodgers is on it too
21. These look sweet. Maybe a TRBX would go well with my TRB and my BB?
22. Just gave it a try. I can see myself using it---not so much from a "learning the lines" point of view, but more from a "what chord is the band playing whilst the bass does the line I already know?". Helps to add context.
23.
I keep pondering if I should sell one of the basses - I just feel a bit guilty having two, when it's not like we're gigging every night or even every week! The cash would come in handy elsewhere, but it's not a desperate situation or anything. Maybe it's just a funny time, but if this band split right now, I think I'd have a gap anyway, as I'm a little jaded with the whole thing anyway as we all get from time to time, especially with the disintegration of the originals project. Don't get me wrong, I'd never stop playing, but it's just a thought to play one bass to bits. Could be an age thing - I was 39 this month, and years and years more of dragging around the pubs is kind of losing it's appeal - especially after a couple of recent, 'through the motions' gigs is dives..... Please tell me we've all be through this temptation to start flogging, and just own TBH, what I need?
I know exactly where you're coming from. I'm the same---I don't like having kit sitting around not being used. I'm not a collector and I'm not rich---I'd rather go on a great holiday or buy something else that I want instead of having instruments lying around unused, especially when I'm already running out of space. I have two guitars and two basses, and thats enough for me. I like having a "backup" in case of some kind of technical disaster and they're also all sufficiently different that they can be used for different things. I can't see myself buying any more unless my circumstances change significantly. The main problem with downsizing now is that its a bad time to sell. There are some things that are still desirable but its very much a buyer's market just now. If you're not desperate for cash then maybe hang on to your stuff and see what the market does (I find it hard to believe it can get worse). What you could do is leave one of the guitars somewhere where you can't get it easily (mates' house, in-laws, etc) and see if you actually miss it.
24. Spent this evening learning "The Greatest Dancer" by Sister Sledge. There's only about half a dozen notes but it took me the best part of an hour to nail the groove. Simple, but absolutely genius. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDwutKpVyas
25. Squier Vintage V4 Yamaha BB414 (this would be my choice)
