So what is 'tone' actually made of?
uncle psychosis replied to operative451's topic in General Discussion
Distortion is a separate entity to "tone" since it's a signal that is being pushed beyond its sonic capabilities.
At the risk of being pedantic, this is wrong. Sounds don't have "capabilities". Distortion is the effect on tone of electrical components being pushed (often, deliberately) beyond their capabilities. To the OP: this website is quite informative and may answer many of your questions: http://www.phys.unsw.edu.au/jw/basics.html#general I'd suggest starting here: http://www.phys.unsw.edu.au/jw/sound.spectrum.html -
Nile Rodgers at Hyde Park - embarrassing
uncle psychosis replied to Jah Wibble's topic in General Discussion
A few weeks ago I met Nile Rodgers. Nothing to do with the thread, I just like seeing it written down :-D -
... and if you thought Mooer pedals were cheap ...
uncle psychosis replied to BigBeatNut's topic in Effects
Some of these are tempting---but not if you get hit with import charges. Has HMRC shown an interest in any of your orders? -
When Keith Jarrett is on form he's astoundingly good, but like you say a lot of his stuff I find a bit dull. The ECM stuff with Jan Garbarek I like, and his trio with Gary Peacock and Jack Dejohnette is fantastic, but for me his finest recording is The Koln Concert. Absolutely brilliant.
Vistaprint are pretty cheap if you use one of their templates, decent quality and quick delivery. However, they will email you daily for ever after...!
This. The constant emails are a bit irritating but quite often they do some pretty good special offers.
I seem to recall someone saying that the slug tape variety doesn't work for shielding, something about the adhesive. Not tested the theory myself.
I've used slug tape and it worked fine. If I was doing it again though I would buy a sheet of foil, not tape. Purely for simplicity, not because the results are better.
I read the 'importing' sticky thread a while ago, is importing from Japan now a no-no (i.e. dealers people used to use are not available anymore)?
The dealers are still there, the problem is the strength of the Yen against the Pound.
Tempted by the Rat and the tuner right now. Wish they made a reverb - everyone does delays.
Mooer do a reverb - the Shimverb. There's quite a few floating around second hand because people like me bought them for the shimmer mode and then decided they didn't like it. The "normal" reverb sounds on it are pretty good though. -
"vibration treatment" sounds like total snake oil to me.

New basses and beating the Credit Card system...
uncle psychosis replied to ZenBasses's topic in General Discussion
Got to be honest, I don't like the idea of using credit to pay for luxury items (unless you're going to pay off the card immediately), especially not in the middle of one of the worst financial periods the world has ever seen. I'd rather not have that debt hanging over my head. -
As far as the overwhelming majority of BassChat members are concerned, there is no problem. To be perfectly blunt about it, we are not going to change the way that BassChat works simply to appease a small number of people who seem to think that their minority viewpoint is more valid than that of the majority. The majority of members have approved of the changes, the minority have had their say and now it's time to move on.
Listen to this man, people. If it were my site I'd have implemented different changes, but it isn't my site and the guys who run it have decided on a course of action. Lets move on.
However, when we mention £500 as our standard fee, it usually sends bridezilla into a sideways spin, and takes a few days for her to recover, catch her breath, and confirm.
Tell them to phone the plumbers union and ask them how much it would cost to get four plumbers for five hours each on a Saturday night. If your band is good you should be charging more.

Are you absolutely sure you want to avoid Yamaha? This is a lot of bass for your money: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/209437-yamaha-trb-1005-pics-added/page__hl__trb1005__fromsearch__1

NBD: EBMM SUB, "wine vomit" purple. May re-spray?
uncle psychosis replied to mcnach's topic in Bass Guitars
all it would take is an idle evening and a bottle of Caesar Augustus in the fridge
I'd definitely volunteer to help, Caesar Augustus is my current favourite tipple £1.39 a bottle in Aldi by the way (along with lots of other Williams Bros beers). -

uncle psychosis replied to mcnach's topic in Bass Guitars
do you really need to ask? SUB!!! (but you may still sound like you more than Bernard Edwards... ah, I wish it were that easy! )

I've found air guitar is the only way of sounding like Edwards!
Sssshhhh. Buying a new bass will make me sound like Bernard, not 1000s of hours of practice! Don't ruin this!! -

This seems a sensible thread to ask this... I've been desperately trying to sound like Bernard Edwards recently---whats the best "stingray on a budget"? -

I like the vomit purple but it really does need a scratchplate. -
Thinking of having a total bass cull!
uncle psychosis replied to stingrayPete1977's topic in Bass Guitars
Do it. I'm definitely coming round to the "one bass plus a backup" point of view. Get one great bass and play the crap out of it -
...because tonight I had one of the best musical experiences of my life. I went to this: http://www.summerhal...d-indigo-night/ Which turned out to be really, really cool. Nile---just Nile, and his guitar---telling stories about his life and playing some music surrounded by an ever changing selection of pop art, some of which was created on the spot by an artist. A very small gig, probably only 200 people, and most of the audience were within about 30 feet of Nile so it really did feel intimate! Nile is a fantastic teller of tales and his guitar playing is just mindblowing when you hear it in isolation. He delved a little into some specifics on songs---for instance the reason no-one can cop "Get Lucky" is because what sounds like one guitar part is actually one rhythm guitar part layered with another single note guitar part, but done to sound like just one guitar. Or, despite "Dance, Dance, Dance", despite being in F major, the vocal melody never sings an F during the chorus. Oh, and mindlowing fact of the day? "Get Lucky" went to number one in half the countries on earth. Wow. The whole experience would have been special enough (I had a huge grin on my face from start to finish) but to top it all off at the end of the show I met the man himself. Needless to say I was a bit starstruck (what do you say to one of your all time musical heroes other than "thanks for the music, man!"?) but Nile was a real gent. Its on again tomorrow night as well, and all I can say is that if you're in Edinburgh and have any way of getting a ticket then beg, borrow, or steal whatever you need to do to get one.

Suspect it will go for peanuts, and Vintage make some great stuff.

Seems like a weird problem. The only thing I can think of---and this is a stab in the dark---is that with bare-metal strings you ground yourself when you touch them. With nylon strings, you don't. I'm wondering if you were picking up extra feedback because the big antenna that is your body was no longer grounded?
Another MusicRadar user over here; yes, there is the occasional futile off-topic spat and argument over 'technique vs 'feel'' and suchlike, but on the whole it's a friendly place with (as Uncle says) some VERY knowledgeable people in a whole range of fields (I count amongst the ones I know personally two amp-builders/techs (one with a certain well-known UK manufacturer off the M1 in the south-east ), a couple of professional sound engineers/acoustics guys, a few pro guitar tutors and a fairly big music shop owner). Classifieds section is often rather drool-worthy too, worth a look. (I post there as 'thebeagle', by the way; don't THINK I'm on Uncle's ignore list yet )

I'm a mod on Musicradar. There are no instructions from up on high other than - bin the spam, bin the libel. Uncle can't ignore me as mods can't be ignored!
Haha, nah you guys are cool. I think. -
A drop in the traffic was inevitable, and £20 for a years' worth of listings seems good value to me. The "problem" arises for the people who aren't perennial gear whores and who aren't regularly trying to shift stuff on, or for people who want to sell things that are worth £50-60 (like many pedals). As good as the BC market is, £7 for a possible sale is quite a lot in those circumstances. I personally think that the one-off fee is a little too high.
0116 Recurve Classic 5 fretless Can't believe I've not done this so far... picked the bass up last summer and still get overawed every time I pick it up. It's the easiest to play fretless I've ever owned and the new circuit ensures it's also the most versatile sounding. Alan and I have reasonably similar taste is bass sounds and playability options but here he's read my mind (OK, short read). The pix...
Thats amazing. I'm no fretless player, but a fretted version of that is pretty much my dream ACG aesthetics wise. Whats the spec?
