This forum has about 90% less agro than any other I post on. Debate causes argument. Its inevitable. We can't all agree on everything. If you find yourself getting annoyed, just leave the thread. If you find that certain posters consistently wind you up, use the ignore function. Part of me wonders whether the increased vocalisation of displeasure has to do with the introduction of fees (even if that displeasure has nothing to do with the marketplace). Once money became involved the relationship between poster and forum changed a little bit---subconsciously at least people might now see themselves as a "customer", with all the expectations and so-on that that brings. I know that attitudes among students have changed since the introduction of tuition fees---there is an expectation among many that Universities will get them a degree regardless of how they perform, because they've "paid for it", despite that clearly not being the deal.

I've long thought "The Simians" would make a great name for a band.

New Daft Punk Album out in may!
uncle psychosis replied to AttitudeCastle's topic in General Discussion
I think Nile Rodgers is on it too -
What do you get when you combine a Yamaha TRB with RBX?
uncle psychosis replied to Jellyfish's topic in Bass Guitars
These look sweet. Maybe a TRBX would go well with my TRB and my BB? -
Just gave it a try. I can see myself using it---not so much from a "learning the lines" point of view, but more from a "what chord is the band playing whilst the bass does the line I already know?". Helps to add context.
I keep pondering if I should sell one of the basses - I just feel a bit guilty having two, when it's not like we're gigging every night or even every week! The cash would come in handy elsewhere, but it's not a desperate situation or anything. Maybe it's just a funny time, but if this band split right now, I think I'd have a gap anyway, as I'm a little jaded with the whole thing anyway as we all get from time to time, especially with the disintegration of the originals project. Don't get me wrong, I'd never stop playing, but it's just a thought to play one bass to bits. Could be an age thing - I was 39 this month, and years and years more of dragging around the pubs is kind of losing it's appeal - especially after a couple of recent, 'through the motions' gigs is dives..... Please tell me we've all be through this temptation to start flogging, and just own TBH, what I need?
I know exactly where you're coming from. I'm the same---I don't like having kit sitting around not being used. I'm not a collector and I'm not rich---I'd rather go on a great holiday or buy something else that I want instead of having instruments lying around unused, especially when I'm already running out of space. I have two guitars and two basses, and thats enough for me. I like having a "backup" in case of some kind of technical disaster and they're also all sufficiently different that they can be used for different things. I can't see myself buying any more unless my circumstances change significantly. The main problem with downsizing now is that its a bad time to sell. There are some things that are still desirable but its very much a buyer's market just now. If you're not desperate for cash then maybe hang on to your stuff and see what the market does (I find it hard to believe it can get worse). What you could do is leave one of the guitars somewhere where you can't get it easily (mates' house, in-laws, etc) and see if you actually miss it.

Spent this evening learning "The Greatest Dancer" by Sister Sledge. There's only about half a dozen notes but it took me the best part of an hour to nail the groove. Simple, but absolutely genius. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDwutKpVyas

Squier Vintage V4 Yamaha BB414 (this would be my choice)

Replacing the pots/caps with good quality ones is so cheap that its worth doing, but I'd probably only bother if I was also replacing the pickups and output jack at the same time. For capacitors, don't buy into the ridiculous snake oil. Orange Drops are more than good enough and they're only a couple of quid.
I thought he'd recently re-signed with them to produce this: http://www.thomann.d...frank_bello.htm But now can't find any empirical evidence to support that. Certainly I associate him with a Fender.
'cor! Thats nice!
I guess that because Fender are basically the market leaders, they don't have to bother advertising. Kind of sh*tty for artists who have a signature instrument, unless they're just happy to have their name on the headstock and be associated with the brand.
There are too many signature models and too many artists clearly don't give a sh*t about producing anything which is actually unique or interesting. "Yeah, here's my signature guitar, its, erm, a P bass with a red scratchplate and, erm, a bad reproduction of my signature on the back". Most of them are utterly pointless and are little more than a way for Fender / the artists to get a bit of publicity/kudos. The Johnny Marr Signature Jaguar is the way it should be done. Hearing Johnny talk about the development of it it becomes obvious that he put real time and effort into coming up with something thats distinct from the rest of Fender's offerings and is actually "his" guitar.

Its hard to think of a better one. Rare that musicians achieve Critical and Popular success too---Nile's played on over £10bn dollars worth of music, if that documentary was accurate

Mixer / powered monitor recommendations
uncle psychosis replied to niceguyhomer's topic in Accessories and Misc
This thread is also relevant to my interests. My current mixers preamps seem to overload when I put my bass through it -
'why are all the things I want too far away?'
I agree with you on the rest but thats not a terrible comment. There have been two or three things I would have bought had the seller been prepared to post them.

Heads up:- Nile Rodgers: The Hitmaker BBC4, good friday
uncle psychosis replied to Stu-khag's topic in General Discussion
If you haven't done so already, buy Nile's autobiography. The documentary missed out a lot of the *really* interesting bits. Really enjoyed it, got it recorded and will probably watch it again this week! -
I'll start. Yammy BB414 with custom ebony fretless board (this in an undisguised excuse to show off Mr.Orange !)
So much hotness.

Heads up:- Nile Rodgers: The Hitmaker BBC4, good friday
uncle psychosis replied to Stu-khag's topic in General Discussion
Nile Rodgers is one of my all-time heroes, and I say that even as someone that doesn't actually like all of his music. On my Virgin box the tagline for the documentary is "Nile Rodgers was raised by heroin addicts and has sold 100 million records". Truly staggering. -
Sell my Thumb? Or keep it and get a 6?
uncle psychosis replied to Chris2112's topic in General Discussion
Personally, selling a bass that you really, really like just to get a bass that you may like seems a bit silly. Given that its also a terrible time for selling stuff I would hold onto it and save up for a 6 string. Once you have the 6 you can decide what to do with the 5. -
I had the Mooer and didn't like it (didn't try it on bass). The shimmer effect is a 5th, not an octave, which makes it sound a bit different to other shimmers. I really, really, really want a BlueSky or Hardwire Supernatural but I wouldn't do anything with them other than put them on shimmer mode and go "ooooh, pretty...."

Why are you frustrated as a bassist?
uncle psychosis replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
I get frustrated because I don't have the time or the money to devote to music. I love playing with other people but just have too many other commitments that aren't going to go away. I'd love to be a full-time musician but I am realistic enough about my own abilities to know that I wouldn't be able to make a good enough living at it. -
It is NOT just about strength and repeated practice. You can get away (to an extent) with poor left hand technique on a guitar because the frets are closer together. On bass, if your technique isn't right then some of the stretches can be nigh-on impossible. The position of your left hand thumb will really make a difference, for example. I'm not saying that your technique *isn't* good---it may well be---but it might be worth making sure that it is whilst you are still new enough to the instrument to change it easily (old habits die hard)! Also, if one finger per fret doesn't work for you then don't sweat it too much. Double bass players typically only use three fingers and they seem to manage ok

I realise that hosting problems are not the fault of basschat but now that lots of people are paying for basschat expectations will rise. I also realise that the subscriptions are just meant to maintain the current site, but the second people are aware that payment is involved their attitude naturally drifts towards that of "customer and supplier".
I refer to your post: 1.Been meaning to get Mr E's book for years! Glad its worth getting.
Get it. Seriously.
2.http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p016r4vs
Awesome! Thanks for the heads up!
3. Absolutely love Bill Drummonds book
Its brilliant.
There was a reported issue with Chrome and Photobucket and the RealDownloader extension. If you type chrome://extensions into the browser you should be able to disable the RealDownloader extension. HTH
Thanks but I don't have that extension!
