1.
No. FLAC and high bitrate MP3 are still 44.1KHz but are lossless (FLAC), or less lossy with less artifacting (MP3). FLAC is the same as a CD. High bitrate MP3s are still not as good as a CD.
If you increase the bit-rate of MP3 enough then no-one can tell the difference when compared to a cd, and you don't have to increase it very far before anyone other than audio geeks would care about the differences anyway.
Vinyl junkies aren't as much of a dying breed as you think, they're just becoming much more genre-specific. There's still quite a lot of people out there who are buying the high-end turntables, top-end speakers, etc, but they're mostly listeners of classical, jazz, reggae, prog rock and some kinds of dance music.
Well, yes. But people that are "into" jazz, classical, and reggae probably aren't the people who are out there downloading everything instead of buying it. The problem for the record industry isn't the people who are "into" music---because we're collectors who'll probably always buy stuff, in whatever format---but the people who used to buy the odd thing here and there but have now just stopped.
 2.
There are plenty of people out there who are audiophiles and who still value sound quality over convenience - where's the super-high-resolution audio medium and the hardware to reproduce it?
Like Flac or high-bitrate MP3?
All they need is a popular and well-respected musician to record an album using this new format, whatever it may be, make it amazing, and then watch the hardware and albums fly off the shelves, the same way Brothers In Arms by Dire Straits sold millions of CD players back in the 80s. And I suggest they make it an analogue format - vinyl for a new generation. Something that can't be reproduced properly through a computer - despite digital music existing for over 30 years, many vinyl junkies still maintain it doesn't sound as good.
Vinyl junkies are a dying breed (and they're demonstrably wrong that digital doesn't sound as good, but thats another debate). People aren't going to buy new hardware to buy a new album anymore. They just won't. CDs flew off the shelves because the benefits of cds over vinyl were obvious to everyone---smaller, harder to damage, etc. The benefits of some new format over what we have at the moment will be very technical and not very accessible to the public---they just won't care.
 3. This old chestnut again. Illegal downloading is not stealing. It is illegal, and you can argue that its morally wrong (I think it is wrong), but its not stealing. If you say its stealing, then you're factually wrong. And people who are factually wrong generally tend to lose arguments. I buy an absolutely shedload of records, but I've also bought a lot of those on the back of someone giving me a mixtape or copy of a band's work. Its a tricky area. Personally I think that the hyperbole and nonsense the likes of the RIAA comes up with with regards downloads does a lot more harm than it does good for musicians---they say things like " we predicted that we'd sell 11 million copies of the new Britney record, we only sold 4 million, the other 7 million lost sales is entirely down to downloads...". When you have morons fighting your corner you're bound to lose. Interesting to see Spotify get mentioned. Personally I think Spotify is brilliant for listeners but an absolute disaster for musicians. It lets people legitimately listen to your music, but you'll be damned if you ever make a penny from it. For me, being on spotify is a bit like a big fat sign saying "we really aren't interested in you paying us for our music". That doesn't make it ok to just download it, but its hard to argue against downloads when loads of artists are voluntarily signing up to a service that means that they are, essentially, giving stuff away for free.
 4.
I know this thread is pretty old but... I needed to ask. Was this with the black Jazz?
Yes. I bought some of those glow in the dark dots but I never got round to using them.
 5. Now, technically they're not a 3-piece...BUT the fourth member only sings/tambourines/melodicas so I think I can get away with posting it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8P40WfRELU fantastic bassline, the breakdown bit in the middle is outstanding.
 6. What did he write on it? I can make out "Duff" but what does the other bit say?
 7. Is this one of the early models where the guys in the factory were washing their hands with bars of soap, or one of the later models where they'd moved to liquid soap?
 8. Signed instruments are weird. To people who don't care about the signature they probably devalue the instrument. You have to hope you can find a collector and that they are willing to pay a premium for it. The fact that you have decent proof of authenticity helps. If you really want to sell it and fetch its best price I think you would probably be best trying to find some serious GnR / Duff McKagan collectors rather than offering it to other bassists, most of whom won't really care for the signature. Good luck
 9.
Fender CIJ 1962 re-issue. There really is no reason to spend more money. Get a good one and set it up properly!
I find it hard to disagree with this.
 10. The latest Eels record, "Wonderful, Glorious". The title is appropriate.
 11.
Oooh, another factoid:
I apologise in advance for the pedantry, but... Factoid A. n. Something that becomes accepted as a fact, although it is not (or may not be) true; spec. an assumption or speculation reported and repeated so often that it is popularly considered true; a simulated or imagined fact.
 12.
............ and we're back to being a musicians forum again!
...wanna buy a bass? I bought it cheap...
 13. It has become almost impossible to say you don't like The Beatles---people throw proper hairy canary hissy fits if you do (just read the last few pages).I think its because lots of Beatles fans are unable to appreciate that it is entirely possible to accept how influential and important the Beatles were whilst not actually enjoying their artistic output. I like The Beatles (although they do have quite a few turds hidden amongst the gems) but just because something is important and influential doesn't mean you have to actually like it.
 14.
Uncle Psychosis's point about a seller's enforced need to realise a good price - sickness, bills, personal circumstances etc., is a good one and shows him to have a considerate nature, IMO.
Thanks. I think the point I was trying to make initially was that I don't think its very fair to assume that someone is out to "screw" the community based on a one-off sale. Its not very community spirited to jump to negative conclusions about your fellow bass chatters, IMO.
 15.
There's a lot of strange behaviour on ebay. I was selling a something a while ago - someone places a high bid. The next day they contact ebay and have the bid removed citing 'made the bid by mistake' or something. They then re-bid just before the item ended with an even higher amount. Seriously bizarre.
That could be an attempt to see the maximum bids of other buyers, or an attempt to work out your reserve price (if you had one). Or it may just have been someone being weird---eBay definitely attracts some weirdos!
 16.
Be interesting to see how this turns out bearing in mind the experience of the performers, session musicians, studio crew in there today compared withe The Beatles of yesteryear. http://www.bbc.co.uk...t-arts-21408897
I remember reading a review of an album of R&B covers of Phil Collins tunes that was only one line long---"worse than anything imaginable by the undrugged human mind". I suspect that line might be reusable in this case.
 17.
The only time I think it's acceptable to sell a bass on for more that a member paid for it is if new strings have been added or if a bass has been bought and then had some luthier work done on it to make it straight.
Is that really what you think or do you mean
The only time I think it's acceptable to sell a bass on for more that a member paid for it is if new strings have been added or if a bass has been bought and then had some luthier work done on it to make it straight.
...because if you mean it as you wrote it then this thread is about to get even longer and even more heated!
 18.
In my business I get this all the time, my usual answer is "No problem, go and buy it from them" Steve
I used to work in a large newsagent chain when I was a student. My branch was open 24 hours so stuff was more expensive than normal, as is usual with small 24 hour shops. People would come in during the day (when other shops were open), pick up a pint of milk from the fridge (where the price was clearly marked), bring it to the counter, and then complain about the price saying things like "the small shop across the road sells this for 20p less". And then they'd buy it anyway. Weirdos. Or they'd come in at 4 in the morning, drunk, and say things like "I can't believe your sandwiches are so expensive". Well, go somewhere else thats open at 4am and buy a cheaper sandwich from them, then
 19.
As I said, I think it was an "in theory" question. It wanted an answer - presumably "in principle".
Great, so we've been arguing over something that isn't even happening? Apologies for being a bit grumpy Stu, I've not been sleeping very well recently and its far too easy to take out your frustrations on strangers on the internet. I'd just like to say that I really do appreciate the basschat "community" (even if I do disagree with some of the regulars on what that means) and don't condone people taking advantage of each other here (not that its actually happening )
 20. I like The Beatles, but I've never quite understood the fuss over the Abbey Road record. It has some genius moments but some absolutely stinking ones too---"Maxwell's Silver Hammer" demonstrates perfectly why the Beatles were doomed.
 21.
Just for the record I didn't accuse YOU of anything; though if by your argument in defence of it you are aligning yourself with those that are then again, that's your look-out.
I described this specific scenario as "a little off". Hardly a resolute defence of flipping.
And - again - and as clarified, I was talking, as I believe the OP was too, about people who make a habit of it, ie. "trade" (by the demarkation of BC). AFAIK it was rhetorical question & not accusing anyone.
Is there anyone on the forum who is making a habit of it? I've not noticed. Hardly anything is selling consistently at the moment, I'd be genuinely flabbergasted if someone is able to consistently turn a profit buying stuff on the forum and selling it for more money a short time later.
 22.
Then either you haven't listened properly or you don't understand Eliot - or both - but it really doesnt matter.
I'm afraid it will take a lot more than TS Eliot to convince me that LZ were good
 23.
Yes, but you missed out 'good'.
No, I didn't
 24.
We've already established that you have difficulty reading things before jumping in with inapprpriate diatribes. Apologies if that's down to dislexia or something, but if it's just down to inability or unwillingness to interpret from what you've read (you have read the whole thread haven't you by now?) then I don't see any point in going any further with this.
Oh dear. Again with the personal insults. If you'd "read the whole thread" you'd find that a few posts ago I actually said: "For the record---buying stuff cheap from the classifieds just to sell it on is a little off, yes. But if it was here, on the classifieds, for cheap, then its already been offered to the community. People on this site know their stuff, if its selling cheap its probably because the market is really, really slow, so selling it on for more will almost certainly be very hard" You chose to ignore that and instead you jump down my throat about "not looking out for each other" and accusing me of only being interested in money, when you know nothing about me. I ask again---which of these things shows more community spirit: 1. Wanting to believe that other basschatters are fundamentally good people, regardless of how much they sell stuff for 2. Assuming that someone who buys cheap and sells for more is out to screw the rest of us without any further information to go on ?
 25.
'Immature poets imitate; mature poets steal; bad poets deface what they take, and good poets make it into something better, or at least something different.' (T.S. Eliot)
LZ were immature, mature, and bad all at once?
