1. The single best music bio I've read is "Things The Grandchildren Should Know" by Mark Oliver Everett ("E" from Eels). Astoundingly good. The second best music bio I've read is "Le Freak: An Upside Down Story of Family, Disco and Destiny" by Nile Rodgers. Also astoundingly good. Another brilliant music book which is almost a biography is 45 by Bill Drummond.
 2. There are better blenders out there than the LS-2 but they cost significantly more. Personally, I'd buy a second hand LS-2 and see if it does what you want. You'll easily sell it again if you need to.
 3.
And finally, a previously torn and ill-repaired ligament in my left wrist means I have pain when playing anything below 3rd fret.
I would deliberately avoid playing that low, then. With a bit of creativity you can rework your basslines etc so that you don't need to play down there.
Well I'm going to go down a slightly different route. It seems pretty obvious to me that the course of action most likely to provide the best chance of not investing in another unsuitable bass would be to get the underlying health issues out of the way. Until that's sorted out I have a terrible vision of a house full of expensive discarded compromises...
I have to agree with that.
 4.
Zingzillas is on CBeebies.
Did you know the BBC is starting an adult channel? Its called CBoobies
 5.
I did ! It's even orangier in the flesh.
6.
Had no issues with putting the thumbrest on the BB. Just have to get it right first time ! No moving it later. Just for the record, I am back in the BB fold, having just bought a BB414 fretless. It will be getting a thumbrest at some point.
Did you buy the sexy orange one from the classifieds here? I was sorely tempted by that but full austerity measures are currently in effect at my house...
 7.
Unc, sorry for a hugely late response, but I added a rest inbetween the two pickups on a BB424X I had last year. It did exactly what I wanted it to. Got it from http://www.classicgu...thumb_rests.php . I havn't got a picture of the BB with one on, but I have put one on my current G&L SB2 in exactly the same place. It's only very small and subtle, but anyway. Here ......
Thanks! That looks really good. My only concern is that the BB has no pickguard to hide the scars of a botched job. Did you have any issues?
 8.
I do wonder how useful a test the plank bass above was, as it's looking at "cheap versus expensive" rather than any innate property of the wood. The density and stiffness of the bit of scrap and the alder might be fairly close to one another. If I really wanted to test whether the wood used for a solid body contributed to the tone, I would use pieces of wood which had wildly different properties - say one very soft and light wood (like poplar) and one bit of something hard and dense (like something in the rosewood family), swapping the same neck and pickups between the two. If nobody could hear a difference between those, threads like this could be put to bed.
You would also need to take the neck and pickups off one of the guitars and then reinstall them in the same guitar and make sure that no-one could hear a difference there either before repeating the whole process with the other one.
 9. Where is the Jam? Most practice rooms have bass amps that will be more than decent for a jam, and if its a jam night they'll probably provide one.
 10.
As far as I'm concerned, the different woods thing is so insignificant in real world applications that I really don't give a monkey's about it. Until one can measure it in a repeatable experiment then it's a waste of time to even debate it. There are no hard facts in this, you can't even say that two pieces of wood from the same tree, never mind the same species or locality will be even similar, never mind identical.
+1. I spent about five years studying brass instrument acoustics, and a lot of brass musicians and instrument makers will swear blind that a trumpet made from brass sounds different to one made from white gold. However, even in scientifically controlled double blind tests the results are inconclusive, at best. Talented instrument makers are truly gifted individuals, but that doesn't mean you have to believe everything they tell you as gospel.
 11. Eating crisps and bananas is all well and good but if your posture and technique is wrong then good circulation won't stop you damaging yourself. I used to get sore hands after playing, but a few lessons from a good teacher to focus on left hand technique helped loads.
 12. I enjoy playing at home. I enjoy playing with bands much, much more.
 13. I could easily and quite happily own just 1 bass. Be warned, though, that now is a terrible time to be selling things. A USA Jazz went for less than £500 on here the other day.
 14. Is there a Yamaha BB with that spec in your price range? They're great things.
 15.
I'm already using a 2.5" leather strap, so not a great deal more I can do on that front.
You might be surprised. I recently changed from a wide suede leather strap to a "Neotech Mega Bass Strap" (other neoprene straps are available) and I find the difference in comfort and perceived weight to be really good. Maybe worth trying one out?
 16.
Tesco Cola is easily distinguishable from Coca Cola. The identity of the product (ie the can/bottle) is what people recognise. If I were in the soft drinks business and put out a cola drink in a red can with 'Steve's Cola' in a swirly silver (or is it white?) font (Coca Cola stylee), then I would fully expect a missive from Coca Cola's legal dept.
You're explaining the legal reason why its ok for supermarkets to make own brand cola, not the ethical one. People don't buy Cola to look at the bottle. They buy supermarket Cola because they want something that looks a bit like Coca Cola (its brown, wet, and fizzy) and tastes a bit like Coca Cola, but at a fraction of the price. Similarly, people buy Rickenbacker copies because they want a bass that looks and sounds a bit like a Rickenbacker, but at a fraction of the price. As far as the consumer is concerned its the same ethical situation.
 17.
That's the problem with threads such as this, examples are brought in to the discussion that bear no similarity to what is being discussed.
In what way is it not relevant? I fail to see any ethical difference between buying a cheap bottle of Cola that says "Tesco" on the label and tastes a lot like Coca Cola and buying a cheap bass that says "Rockinbetter" on the headstock and looks a lot like a Rickenbacker.
 18.
Gonna go against the flow here. I can't really see what the problem is with Rickenbacker's stance on this. They see instruments such as those in the op's photo as being counterfeit and take the appropriate measures. I'm sure Rickenbacker have, in the past, spent a lot of time, money, blood, sweat and tears designing and manufacturing a quality product. Doesn't seem quite right to me that someone can come along and say, " Ooooh, what a fantastic looking bass, I can make one that looks identical and sell it for a fraction of the price"... As I say, doesn't seem right to me. If you want something that looks like a Rickenbacker - buy a Rickenbacker!

I'm sorry, but I fully support the "Rickenbacker Police". It is a blatant copy making money off the back of someone else's design and reputation. Bass makers of the world ........ make your own designs !!!!!!!
I hope neither of you have ever bought own brand Cola, Cereals, generic aspirin, etc etc etc?
 19. She's really, really good. Being young and good looking as well as super-talented will not harm her career either... ...would prefer it if she covered some songs I like though
 20. Nice basses these. I suspect you will get more interest if you post some better photos.
 21. Hey guys I'm having a weird issue with the desktop version of the site and google chrome. I can't see any embedded photos from photobucket---there's a (small) gap where the photo should be, but I can't see the photo itself. I can see photos embedded from photobucket on other sites using chrome (so I don't think its a problem with my browser) and if I log into basschat using Firefox I can see things as normal. Here's a post containing a photobucket image that I can't see on Chrome. http://basschat.co.u...ost__p__1947508 Edit: Really weirdly, if I hit "quote" on that first post by Mooseh then I can see the photos in the quote in the post editor, but I can't see them again once I actually make my post. Any ideas? This seems very strange.
 22. British Sea Power brought this out a few years ago, it was pretty tasty (tasty enough that I bought a case...)
 23. *bump* Donation to basschat with every sale folks...
 24.
Talkbass had the same discussions when they introduced their payment scheme, albeit with no 'one off' or 'free' options. It's worked very well, and seems to be working here, too. We're keeping an eye on it, and can change the prices/options in the future if we need to. We may find, as TB did, that it actually enhances the community and makes the site safer and a better selling environment.
Good stuff If you're aware of it and keeping an eye on things then there's not much else you can do Hope it all works out. Now someone buy my freakin' memory man...
