1.
Although there the analogy ends because prog rockers were musically talented and could actually play their instruments.
...and yet it was the punks who have the lasting musical legacy. Whatever punk was, it was completely and utterly necessary.
2. Musically, morrissey was a genius. The trick is just to avoid his interviews!
3.
I think Johnny Marr composed and played most of the basslines... AR just there for live work.
Thats not true. [Andy Rourke's playing on The Queen Is Dead album] "is something that no other bass player could match" --- Johnny Marr "He started off as a really good guitar player, but as I progressed, he got really interested in playing the bass. The two of us had this musical chemistry that everybody can hear in the Smiths. To this day, I’ve never met a bass player who isn’t super impressed by the way Andy Rourke plays. He’s a real one-off." --- Johnny Marr "When I was fifteen, I formed one of my first bands with my best friend. He was at that time the best musician, one of the best musicians I’d ever heard. We were just kids. Then in 1982, I formed a band in Manchester and I asked my best friend to come play the bass with me. And he was still one of the best musicians I’d ever heard. And tonight thirty years later, I’m gonna invite one of my best friends in the world, and he’s still one of the best musicians I’ve ever heard. From The Smiths... Mr. Andy Rourke! " - Johnny Marr (introducing Andy Rourke onto the stage last month)
4. Its important for your partner to respect your hobbies and interests (and even more important for them to respect music if its your job). However, with that said, all relationships require a bit of compromise here and there and I get the feeling (from this thread and elsewhere) that too many blokes are unwilling to do so. Spending every night playing the guitar/bass for hours, out gigging/rehearsing every friday and saturday, sneaking your 13th precision bass into the house and hoping she doesn't notice, etc. There comes a point where you have to stop pretending that you're single and start respecting your partner by occasionally prioritising them over the lump of wood and metal on a stand in the corner.
5. If you've already got an 810 then by all means use it. Lugging them around gets tiring very quickly though. If you don't already have one, I'd get something smaller and lighter.
6.
Everyday on fleabay and often on here too, there are some bass's on offer than aren't far off a brand new delivered price to be worth the risk of a s/h punt....they aren't new no matter how little played, could be unwrapped and hung on a wall but they still aren't new, they are secondhand, previously owned with no puka warranty etc or brand new bass feely good warmth. Don't get me wrong I've bought lots of s/h bass's but it's hard to beat that nice new smell and feel of a virgin bass.
This. "I only bought this last month and its only been played twice, so I'm asking 95% of the new price". Ummm....howsabout no? Secondhand and in mint condition is still secondhand. Price it accordingly. I've seen a few sellers on here guilty of that as well.
7. Lovely. Enjoy!
8. If you're really, really careful you can scuff them a bit with sandpaper to diffuse the light a bit more. Personally I'd just use a small lump of blutack. You don't need much and its completely reversible if you come to sell.
9. Two beautiful basses. The Shuker is my favourite, but I'd happily accept either as a present
10.
I haven't had time to read the whole thread, I suppose I should before leaping to conclusions. Still accepting cash off people though isn't he?
Apparently he is no longer accepting orders. Small mercy.
11. Never heard of this guy before now. Seems like a crazy situation. I'm very surprised that none of the guys owed basses appear to have tried very much to get any kind of restitution from him. They seem remarkably zen about the whole thing. I'd have been knocking down his door after a year, never mind ten!
12. Apologies if this is obvious....but check your cable works before faffing about inside your bass!
13. Both great basses, both quite different. I'd go Yamaha, but thats me. Whichever you buy will be a good bass, you just need to decide which suits you and your needs best.
14.
I hope the BBC screen Chic's set when they play Glastonbury this year. Nile seems to be everywhere recently. I guess he's trying to get as much done as he can as he knows he has a limited amount of time left?
Having read his book, I think he's just a bit of a workaholic / "grab the moment" guy. There's been a lot of interest in him and Chic recently, and with Get Lucky getting, well, huge, his star is as bright as ever. Good luck to him, he deserves it. Great book by the way.
15. Lovely! I'd offer you a trade, but all I've got is a TRB1005!
16. Bargain. I only paid just over £100 for mine, mind you, and that included postage.
17.
I've just received an email from them, because Pay Pal must have been in touch with them even though it's after the 45 days. They sound very angry, and are insisting they have not received the return. They keep asking for the courier, and over and over I'm saying Royal Mail recorded delivery. They keep asking for proof of postage, and I have scanned the receipt and emailed it around 5 or 6 times, and again today!
Remember that Royal Mail don't exist in Greece. They'll have given it to a local company to deliver - might be worth finding out who. If it's been handed over to a Greek company Royal Mail won't give a toss about helping you and it will be easier for Minotaur to chase a Greek delivery company than it will be for you. Good luck :-)
18. Big dano fan here but I'm not fortunate enough to own one :-(
19. In order of (my) preference: Yamaha BB414 JHS / Vintage P Squier P
20.
Our guitarist had someone by the throat who placed a pint on our powered desk a few years back.
Well at least he was able to deal with it maturely...
21. Do you mean your avatar? (mine is the wee monkey in the red and yellow top). If so, click on your name at the top right of the screen (next to the sign out button), then select "my settings". Under the profile settings tab there's a Photo option.
22. If you can't afford to lose your bass then get insurance. If you really, really, really can't afford the few quid a month that insurance costs then never, ever, let your bass out of your sight.
23.
Not really. Turning up the lowest frequencies can kill a speaker at what can seem modest volumes, and simply telling someone to go easy does't always get heeded. I've said exactly that before only to find every control on the amp dimed to the max. Fortunately the guy was as ignorant about his own gear as he was about mine, and was't getting the level out of his multi fx to make either the clip or limiter lights flash.
If your amp was that delicate, you'd just not lend it. If the other guy has a big fat active preamp in his bass, an eq pedal, or an octaver then he could still do the same level of damage. You're under no obligation to let a stranger use your amp. I'd never criticise anyone for saying no in that situation. But if you are going to lend someone an amp, then letting them change the EQ settings is hardly the end of the world.
24.
Heh. A bass player who turns up for a gig with no gear isn't a bass player in my book. Mind you, my book is pretty weird... but even so.
Indeed. But sometimes there are excuses. I've turned up to gigs where the promoter told us there was a house backline only to discover that it either didn't exist or didn't work. Thankfully I have a DI box that I take to gigs but if you were naiive enough to take a promoter at their word you'd be in trouble!
