Im watching it on iplayer now, sounds good. Its still weird seeing BJA playing anything other than that blue Strat covered in stickers...

I still don't understand how its physically possible for anyone to play "Panic Song". His forearms must be like treetrunks. I stopped paying attention to Green Day (I still really like their first three or four albums) a few years ago but there's no denying just how tight they are. The songs sound like they should be simple to play but they really do have a groove and tightness to them thats actually quite hard to imitate. I've seen a lot of bands trying to cover Green Day and most of them sound rubbish---which is odd, for a 3 or 4 chord band!!
I was heavily criticised on here a few years ago for selling a bass for £200 more than i bought for on here (student and very hard up at the time), but it seems to have calmed down now a little.
The last time this topic came up (a few months back) there were quite a few posters who were adamant that selling stuff on here for more than you paid for it was a massive abuse of the community and completely and utterly unforgivable. It got fairly heated as I recall.
I know there are no absolute rules for pricing used gear, but I'm wondering if there is a generally accepted etiquette. Is it reasonable to sell something for more than it was bought for? Is it reasonable to buy something, use it for a period of time, possibly for fee-earning gigs, then sell it on later for the same price. On that basis, we'd never have to incur any wear-and-tear costs ourselves would we? Just wondering.
I sell stuff at, or just below, whatever the market-rate for that piece of gear is at the time I come to sell it. If I get a ridiculously good deal on something and my own finances allow it then I will try and pass that deal onto other people, but at the same time I have a family to provide for and their needs come first!
A lot of sellers on eBay won't ship to Italy. I don't know why, I've sold to Italy and Spain with no problems.
My Dad lives in Italy. Its a wonderful country but their postal and courier services are dreadful.

Bass Mods K7. 7 string jazz bass? Yes...
uncle psychosis replied to binky_bass's topic in Bass Guitars
It will be tuned B to F as that is what I need to play what we play. It should be getting shipped out today... cant wait!
What kind of stuff do you play? Do you use the top strings for meedly-meedly improv stuff, or do you incorporate it into a more traditional supporting bass role? i'm quite intrigued (I have no idea what I'd do with an extra two strings!) -
The answer is....depends. I think a board of really good separate pedals will probably sound better than a multifx and is very straightforward to use. However, the multifx will cost considerably less, be more flexible, and be more convenient. It just depends what you want, really. Modern multi-FX have some very capable sounds on them, especially for live use where many of the nuances can get lost. I've often thought that the overdrives on them are the weakest effects, so if thats what your'e after you may be better going to single pedal drive units. Personally, I prefer separate pedals but thats because I don't have the patience for menus and sub menus and patches and so on. Sometimes I wish I did, because the sheer convenience of a single effects unit really appeals.

Expensive handmade instruments will never die out, because musicians are by and large a conservative bunch. Concert violinists don't buy expensive antique instruments because they're better than modern equivalents, they buy them because of the kudos of owning one and because they are expected to. Similarly there are enough bassists out there who will never accept that you don't need to go hand built in order to get a top level instrument.

I saw that yesterday and texted him. No reply so I assumed it had gone. Suspect it will have gone in minutes

Bass Mods K7. 7 string jazz bass? Yes...
uncle psychosis replied to binky_bass's topic in Bass Guitars
It feels strange to see a 7 string bass with "fender" styling. Looks like a bargain for what you get, but I can't imagine my stubby fingers dealing with a fretboard that wide... -
I need to mod my nut - help required!
uncle psychosis replied to Evil Undead's topic in General Discussion
I could do that. Would drop B sound terrible with 105 gauge strings?
I suspect that a 105 gauge string won't be playable if you drop it to B. But it'll only take you a minute to try it and find out. Good luck! -
Passive? PJ? Yamaha BB. Also the new TRBRX looks really, really cool. Or get a TRB and bypass the active bits. Any Yamaha, really

Given the timescales involved, why not just hold off on changing strings until you have the time to do it "properly"? -
The singer in my band went to a gig and a guy comes up to him and says "excuse me, are you the singer in supermarionation?" to which he replied "Yes". The response? "I thought so, I remember you because you're the best band I've seen in edinburgh for years..." needless to say we're a bit chuffed by that!

Thanks guys. Anyone else have any thoughts?

Modding -- Which Worked? Which Didn't?
uncle psychosis replied to Lowender's topic in General Discussion
I've never modded a bass but I have modded a few guitars. In the case of my telecaster, I shielded the control cavity, put in better pots and switch, and replaced the pickups because they were microphonic. The guitar definitely sounded better afterwards---less noise, bigger usable range on the volume/tone pots, and best of all no unwanted squeals! -
GuitarGuitar Edinburgh has the Fender (not Squier) one out on the shop floor. It looks lovely, but I daren't play it because I'm currently too poor for GAS!
-
I'd be tempted to check out the five strings in the Yamaha BB range.
I imported a Guild B402-A in from the States, one of only 335 made (assuming all serial numbers were issued and started from 1 - and that number is shared between the B402 and the single pickup B401), I guess that counts as pretty rare. Here's a picture of me playing it, wearing a silly hat.
Between you and BRX you're giving me serious GAS for hard to find basses...thats another lovely looking thing!

Thanks, BRX. I really love those SBV-style basses, that one is particularly nice. I think I'd prefer chrome hardware, but other than that its really cool. You should use it more often, it definitely suits the Dick Venom vibe.
I own a Yamaha BJ5B (essentially a cross between an SBV and TRB5). Signature bass of Terry & The Blue Jeans who are a very popular surf band in Japan, made in a limited edition of only 50. I probably own the only example outside of Japan, but if it was possible for me to get this I believe that almost nothing is rare that it will never turn up.
Just had a google...looks awesome. Any chance of some pics?

Even the best luthiers have their off-days...
uncle psychosis replied to wateroftyne's topic in Bass Guitars
The thing I'll take away from this is the supplier's aggressive and at times frankly ludicrous response on a public forum to a customer problem. That's factual, and not disputable, despite some apologia on here along the lines of 'he must have been having a bad day' or 'he always talks like that'.
Me too. The condition of the bass was neither here nor there as far as I am concerned. -
Either Molan should say the buyer messed with it himself or should refrain from posting more fuel IMO. Your not helping your mate out at all with these cryptic posts
+1. I find it weird that he thought the "trial by internet" of JC was unfair but is now making unsupported insinuations about the other party in this whole sorry affair. -
Hey folks I've currently got a set of Status Flatwounds on my TRB and whilst I love the feel I'd like some strings with a bit more zing and slightly less thump (especially on lower notes). I suspect that pressurewounds or halfwounds maybe up my street but I'd really like some recommendations. I'm not prepared to spend much more than £30 on a set of strings so please bear that in mind... tl;dr: Please recommend strings that feel like flats under the fingers but sound like halfwounds. Cheap. Cheers!
