If I was spending £4k on a bass it would have to be a custom bass. I also wouldn't pay that much for a Fender that had been put together in a mysterious way I'd work out what I wanted 1st, thinking about all the bits I'd really appreciated from my previous basses and what they lacked. I'd then find a luthier that didn't mind spending a lot of time going through all the options (after all it IS a lot of money) and discussing it all in detail. I'd then be a bass that's a little different and suits my purpose. Sod the resale value if that's at the expense of getting what really suits you and you anticipate the bass being a keeper. Personally I find that Alan at ACG is brilliant at communication and working with the customer. The realism and every day congruence of the bloke perhaps detracts somewhat from the 'mythical' aura that surrounds some other bass builders but I reckon his products stand comparison with basses costing 1 1/2 to 2 times the price. With the change you could always donate it to my benevolent fund?

Thomann are superb in this respect. Sadly since the 'crunch' they are too expensive -

SOLD: Sadowsky NYC Standard 4 - big singles - ash/maple/spalt
GreeneKing replied to Marlat's topic in Basses For Sale
That is without a doubt the single most stunning example of a Sadowsky that I have ever seen. It ticks all the Jazz boxes and then some. Seeing this has in part made my 'bass day' and made me a bit miffed that it's well beyond my reach (unless you're looking for a 4001 Chris Squire ). I suspect that someone with more cash to spare than me will be along later and snap this up. -
There's the method's of getting the sacking over on him by various surreptitious means that in the main make it easier on those doing the sacking and not on the drummer in my way of thinking. If you get sacked from a band it's going to hurt and he will have to deal with that. It's a lot like ending a relationship, people have to get over it but it hurts and time heals. I'd say be straight, be honest, tell him that his drumming is holding you all back and that he'll have to make way for a new drummer, nothing personal and don't get into a slanging match with the bloke when he 'kicks off'.

I'd say give Overwater nickels a try. I've used DR Sunbeams and Sadowsky's and I think they're fab. £13.99 deliver for 4 too.
You are spreading terrible disinformation :-)
I don't think you actually read my post. I was particularly careful not to do that and to just give the facts in relation to the message I received.

I don't want to either be a harbinger of doom or a spreader of malicious info but I went into the Soundslive site and tried getting a finance quote.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION T S Courtman & A Timperley of Cooper Parry LLP were appointed Joint Administrators of the Company on 12 May 2009 under Leicester County Court reference 690 A0 of 2009. The affairs, business and property of the company are being managed by the Joint Administrators, who act as agents of the company without personal liability.
This was the message that came up, of course it could be in relation to the finance company.

Stringray - Weak at the Gees Jazz - 'Honky' Tonk Precision - Bass, no frills! Overwater - Articulate Rickenbacker - Goddam Yankee twang! Thumb - Growly long thang (that balances AND has a slim neck) ACG - Purrfect feminine beauty with a big bottom!

Relic'd basses? False Incongruent A lie Shallow Insincere Trying to be something they're not Fake A nonsense A nod to marketing over sense Just plain wrong I'm not a great fan Just to add that I love genuine, real 'used' instruments

This has been really useful. I returned my brand new LM II broken from brand spanking new and during the 4 months (I jest ye not) that The Bass Centre took to repair it they lost the manual. The amp had a simple power supply fault and has been fine in the subsequent years. The Bass Centre didn't just lose the manual, they also lost any hope of further custom from me
My understanding of the filters is: VPF... Scoops the mids centred at 380 and boosts the lows and highs. VLE... Cuts frequencies above 250 So both can be used (in moderation.... or not!) and they wont be fighting each other.
Thanks for that, my ignorance. Really, no sarcasm Edited to add:
frequency range 250Hz 20kHz (cut)
So perhaps the VLE is a cut high and low after all. It may make my comment relevant? Having combined 'smiley' and 'frowney' EQ's would seem a bit pointless. Peter

I find some of the apparently uniformed negative comments re the LM II a bit narrow and perhaps 'anti' for the sake of it. i.e. find something popular and then knock it down a bit. Bass gear is a bit of a fashion business/a search for that ultimate tone (does it exist) and I know many folks who have owned a LM II in their 'Grail quest'. I don't know anyone who has owned one and regretted it, some even move on and then come back to it later on. The same sadly cannot be said for Ashdown heads which have their followers but many detractors too. I always run my amp EQ flat and use the filters (never both together) to get my desired tone. Running both filters together seems strange to me as why fill and scoop the mids at the same time? Fairly obviously the cabs make a huge difference too as does the bass. In fact with an ACG pre amp most of my tone shaping is done 'onboard'. The GS112 Aguilars are great with the LM II and the filter can be used to fill the mids on these slightly mid scooped cabs for cutting through. But, I must confess I've never tried an Ashdown rig - I don't need to as I'm totally happy with what I've got

Anyone know of a similar design to a Wal Bass?
GreeneKing replied to Soloshchenko's topic in Bass Guitars
I always think that my Overwater Progress III Deluxe reminds me of a Wal. Not absolutely sure why. The ACG pre is similar to the Wal pre but I know from talking to Alan that it's not designed to copy it in any way. It operates over a considerably wider range of frequencies evidently. -
I can give you the neck dimensions for my G&L, Warwick Thumb, ACG Harlot and Overwater too if you'd like em I do have a pair of 4001's but as they are later models (A CS and a C64S) and they may not have much relevance to a 70's model.

Warwick Thumb Bass Thru Neck 4 String...
GreeneKing replied to teejfunkymonk's topic in Bass Guitars
Don't get a new one - inferior instrument at an inflated price. Look for a pre 1993 and you should pay no more than £900 for a good one. I've got a 1990 and it's quite a different beast to the later models. I've bougt newer Warwicks and always regretted it. -

Leave a few bass players alone in a room with some basses in the 'wee hours' and ...... I went to bed a 3am and they were still going Our venue for the day: Some basses (before my camera battery failed): and a guitar: The inimitable Dave Perry contemplates another string: Alan (Skelf) Paul (Sugden) and Paul's mate whose name Paul will no doubt remind me. Nice guy for a guitard and boy did he get some stick The mighty nine string being put to bed by Mark - guess his forum name? Shame I took one flat battery and one duff one for my camera!!!
