  1. It's a cold roof so there's vented soffits on there.
  2. That's something I'm going to look at. There's a ventilation strip on the window and it has a notched handle so it can be opened slightly and secured. I'll see how they perform and go from there. I've also looked into noiseless soundproof vents which I can fit into the door if need be.
  3. Well, as mentioned I'm planning on getting bass traps and acoustic boards (probably the Sound Mafia sort which look good value). I'm also looking at the Producer's Choice sound blankets for using over the doorway and window and also around loud guitar amps. I'll adjust accordingly depending on the results.
  4. They're acoustic plasterboards that are up there now (that was no fun lugging 40kg plasterboards through the house into the garden on my own!) and there's acoustic Rockwool behind them. Then there's the cavity wall behind that so I'm hoping that will block most of the sound. The ceiling has a double skin of plasterboard and is sealed with acoustic sealant. I plan on putting bass traps in as well as some acoustic panels along the walls and ceilings. I'm also toying with the idea of doing a vocal booth if the results on vocals aren't satisfactory.
  5. Plasterboard and power sockets all done. Being plastered tomorrow. Originally I was going to dry line and paint it but I just thought if I got it plastered the finish would look nicer, it'd be less hassle for me as I've never done taping and jointing before and it's pretty time consuming. Managed to get a reasonable price for the plastering too so happy days!
  6. I use one of these as my main amp. Absolutely love it. Tons of power, great sound and very versatile.
  7. I'm planning on building some home made bass traps and using them to create angles in each corner. I've read about software that you can buy that will take the shape of your room into consideration and make recommendations.
  8. Resilient bars are up on the ceiling now. These are to create a gap which will give additional sound proofing and will have two layers of soundproof plasterboard attached to them.
  9. Stop analysing music and just appreciate the art-form. It doesn't need to compartmentalised.
  10. I have a Doug Wimbish Euro in Amber (didn't realise that they did other colours) but I beg to differ on the metal/crossover thing. I love mine, especially for recording, it's my go-to bass for our band's recording. The sound is immense.
  11. That's really good to know and thanks for the info. It's funny, I was talking to our drummer yesterday about electric kits and he said that his main bug-bear was the bass drum. He found that there was no "kick back" (his words, not mine) like you were hitting a wall with the beater, whereas on an acoustic kit you get some rebound. He also stated that on most of the electric kits he's played, you get some excessive rebound from the snare and toms which takes some getting used to. He did concede that he range of sounds was a plus with an electric kit though, just as you've pointed out here.
  12. From what I can gather from drummer's comments, the kits with mesh heads are more natural feeling but apparently still aren't a patch on the real thing. It's certainly something I'll be looking at.
  13. You would not believe the look on drummer's faces at the mere mention of an electronic kit. I've touted the idea with three drummers that I know and they all say that they're crap, the don't feel real and are difficult to adapt to for recording. I think they're just making excuses personally LOL!
  14. I've used 100mm phenolic board in the ceiling. It's a cold roof and I've used Gapotape to fill in the gaps. Oh and how messy is expanding foam? LOL! You're not the first person who's said that! 😂 Thanks mate! Well there's a big window in there for starters and there's trickle vents on the window for when it's closed. Not installing air-con because surprisingly due to the insulation in the roof it'll keep at a constant temperature. It's surprisingly cool in summer and I've been in there on the hottest days of the year and it's pleasantly cool. I'll be installing a wall heater for winter when it may get chilly. There's lots of insulation in the cavity (100mm Rockwool) and 50mm acoustic insulation on the interior wall.

  17. Personally I really don't think that wood has much bearing on the sound of guitars or basses.

  19. Yeah, that's pretty much what most people feel when they play a Spector. I still love my Jazz and the Precisions but for recording, you just cannot beat a Spector. For metal, I don't think there's a better bass.
  20. Finally have a door and a window installed. The door is a composite door with added security locks. Quite hefty with some soundproofing. Electrician came round yesterday routed the wiring which will allow me to do the roof and wall insulation too. I also started painting the studio. Word of advice, if you're going to be paint porous blockwork with a paintbrush, don't bother. Much better to invest in a spray gun which can get into all the pores of the block work. Wish I'd have known this earlier. It would have saved a lot of graft.
