1.
I saw Albert Lee live the other day at a village hall near Mansfield, Notts. He was on fire and playing his MusicMan through a Fender Tone Master amp....wow, what a sound and what a great player and singer too.
He is great! Such a nice chap as well.
2.
http://www.thefretbo...ster-600#latest Nice tele.....
Cheers!
3. Sounds like too much hard work...seemingly turning into an admin task! I dare say there are countless bands not doing this and avoiding tax at the same time. I am not one of them!
4. I'm not surprised said retailer aren't weighing it. They shift a lot of gear and I imagine this is just not what they do, which is crazy...as its a few seconds job. I've used them previously but I'm not sure I would again. Every big retailer should take a leaf out of Sweetwater's book in the USA. They weigh and take photos of almost every bass/guitar, and have a brilliant guitar gallery (which I go on to check what the colours look like instead of looking on the manufacturer's photoshopped images). If you are spending £1000+, it should be EXPECTED that you want additional information. I would take advantage of their returns policy, as to be honest, that is your only way of doing it, and its completely fine to do this. I've used digital kitchen scales before, but they aren't amazingly accurate....definitely better than nothing.
5.
After all the information that has been posted on Basschat about speakers and cab design by some very knowledgable contributors, I find it astounding that people still think that the sound of a rig is mostly dependent upon the cone size(s) of the speaker(s) in them. IME every cab sounds different and while cone size does have an effect it's just a part of all the factors that go to make up the "sound" of that cab. From what I've seen and heard I would say that cab size, and design is more important than the cone size of the speakers it's loaded with.
Absolutely...probably also why some 4x10s work quite well with some 1x15s, if they have been designed that way. It doesn't always work out well though.
6. It's worth bearing in mind that a friend's dad bought one of the double H pickup basses (L2000?) and it looked like a stunner in all natural finish. As with all companies, if it turns up with a problem, you don't really have much to worry about apart from them sorting it out. I'm quite suprised they haven't been more popular. For me, the humbucker tones sound great but not my usual tastes. I've seen the recent reviews online for the P bass they've re-released, and for me it isn't Fendery enough. That's me though...and its only a youtube demo.
7. This is why I avoided Gibson. I had a look at a few SG's recently, and theit paintjobs looks very rushed. Pretty low prices though, for some of their basses.
8.
Can you link me a few please? I've missed those.
It would involve a few searches on Talkbass....there was one chap recently who waited months and months, then sent it back, then something else happened and I'm sure he had to get a third bass. I could be wrong. If you search G&L on Talkbass there should be a few things that come up. It's probably a very small percentage that don't turn up right.
9. I mean as in push the mids to the max level....mainly as the Bass Terror is then at 'flat' for mids....as you can only cut on it. You could always back off a little, and lower the bass as well. The tweeter/playing style/strings will have a massive effect on the treble and 'grind'.
10. One option is to have a minor tweak of the truss rod. If you google Musicman truss rod wheel the diagram will come up showing which way is correct. You probably already know that! Unless the saddles are really high, I would keep them as they are and just adjust the rod....strings tuned as normal, just use a small tool, small amounts, then check again. I had to adjust the rod on my Ray 5 HS and Classic Ray 5. The Ray 5 HS was too high, sorted. The Classic Ray 5 was WAY too low (almost touching the board due to weather changes etc)....I've found adjusting the action higher seems to react quicker than the other way round.
11. Try the Orange Terror through a more traditional sounding cabinet, with a tweeter. Two TC RS210's would sound great, IMO. DIme the mids...
12. Only seen a few of them, or heard them, but I seem to see a few neck problem threads every now and then. Might just be coincidence.
13. The best thing, I've found, for being generally tired, is actually exercise. I never believed this. I mean, how can doing more make you feel better? I don't necessarily mean exercise the day after, more so just keep it up regularly and try and fit it in the night before the gig, or even better, just before the gig. My usual routine is a run on the treadmill three times a week. I barely ever get a mid afternoon slump now. I generally get more natural highs now from just things like a warm day or a good day at work...like a 'content' feeling, which is good. I think part of this is because I'm more active. My bass and potential band work does suffer though. Less time for bass/guitar! After a ridiculous stag do this weekend, involving two very full on late nights, I felt fine yesterday. Tired today, but I know once I've had a day to recover today I'll be normal tomorrow.
14.
Nah, get the new Majesty guitar
Hhaha! They are a bit beyond my needs...as much as it would be cool to own, I don't even listen to DT but massive respect to them as monster players. The Majesty is beautiful but the Albert Lee has that retro thing going on which is more my taste. My guitar talent would be wasted on a Majesty! I'd do it no justice.
15.
Have you thought about the Musicman Axis Supersport? Tele-ish shape... I bought one from Dubjunkie here on Basschat when I was after a tele... wish I still had it.
They look great! I'm checking prices on the Silhouette Special vs a Strat American Standard at the mo. Albert Lee HH is a definite.
16. I'd always say the HS is more 'refined', more traditional, less aggressive (although the EQ can change it whatever you want). The HH is a beast.... Both are great IMO.
17. Thanks all. Things have advanced a little. After spending a fair few hours writing on guitar this weekend I've realised I can get fairly decent on a guitar (not lead) fairly quickly and writing is really fun. It's a different thing to bass...I enjoy it but bass feels 'normal' to me. I suspect this is just being used to it. I've now decided to move on my 00/01 Telecaster and put it on ebay to opt for a different Telecaster and an Albert Lee HH Musicman...not sure which Tele model I fancy yet, but I feel like despite my old one being immaculate and great to play, I fancy a change, One good thing is that it is stopping me mounting up more and more basses which quite frankly I will never need now. A few guitars is a nice variation. I'm hoping to end up with: Musicman Albert Lee HH - I've loved this shape/model since it came out, and the HH will give me a nice change, plus all rosewood neck, YUM. Fender Telecaster (s) - Either an American Vintage reissue, or a new modern American Standard and a Road Worn. If I choose to get just one Telecaster, I might also opt for a Roadworn Strat. Rig sounds great, and I have more than enough pedals to keep me occupied.
18.
Where does the Orange Terror 500 fit into this conversation...?
Loudest of all of them. Cheapest, great UK service (my guitar Dual Terror had a faulty tube which I didn't spot for a while and they just sent me a new one, no issues) but more importantly, great Orange tone. If you like a grunty, fairly aggressive and more 'tubes being pushed' tone, the Orange is one of the best out there. Plus, it looks cool. Bonus. I think we are relatively lucky to have a decent and large amp manufacturer based in the UK.
19.
To be fair, my LMIII is from before the Indonesian days but I really like it and it's more than loud enough. However, the TH500 is calling as it'll match my Aggie cabs!
If I had an Italian LM3 I would be keeping it now...and adding the TH500 as well
20.
So is the TH500 250w rating @ 8ohms louder than the LMIII 300w rating @ 8ohms?
Nope, unfortunately not in this case. The TH will push harder at 8 and 4 ohms, and uses a power module used in 800 watt amps but without straining it. I wouldn't worry about the stated wattage so much. My RH450 was louder/pushed harder than my LM3 at 8 ohms and we all know about the TC amp ratings! The TH is a USA built amp that is so far proving to be pretty much bombproof in terms of reliability.
21. I think a fair amount of the forum are either A) quite young e.g. late teens, or 'mature' players e.g. late 50s +. I sit in the early 30's, and I don't think there are that many of us at this age on the forum. Welcome, get playing an enjoy!
22. The LM3 will not push as much wattage as the TH500. The TH500 really will hammer out a lot of power (very honestly rated) and is quite mid orientated, with plenty of lows, but not lots of treble sheen. The LM3 will sound more modern but will hit its limiter quite a lot earlier. It is more of a 'flat' tone with a nice warmth around the edges. As the LM3 is now made in Indonesia but no cheaper, I would opt for a GK or the last of the GB Shuttle 9.2's if you want clean and modern. If you want warm vintage grunt and heft, the TH500. The Carvin amps are also quite nice!
23. I miss the tone and sheer power, plus mine was ultra reliable once TE sent me some new fuses. Mine was a GP12400SMX, in the heavy wooden case covered in green carpet. I gigged the hell out of it. I sold it a few years back (well, probably more than a few) to go lightweight as I wanted a full tube amp (Orange) and used the TE funds to go towards a modern lightweight amp. The only thing I wasn't keen on was the weight. I mean, I can understand some weight, but that was so difficult to carry it was unreal. I scuffed my hands a few times and when I almost fell over with it when getting out the car after a late gig, I knew enough was enough. I also wasn't happy that it turned up on an angle in its headcase. I think the retailer purchased the last UK built amps (may have been ex demo?) and sold them cheap. My dad's friend put it straight in the case as he is a carpenter...seems the weight of the amps was too much for the small wooden 'ears' inside to hold onto it straight! Fond memories though. I didn't swap and sell amps back then a lot...and it was nice to be happy with it!
24. Have you seen the Majesty guitar?!??!
25. Great! Yes, I imagine DT using EBMM guitars and basses will mean the Bongo is getting much more coverage. That pre and those pups really are superb.
