1. I couldn't find any takers for the ticket in the end! A shame, as they're an outstanding band live. Was the 4th time I've seen them... Enjoyed it so much, looking at making it a 5th next week if I can! Oh, and I did manage to bump into Paul Turner, who gave me some very good advice... "I'd watch that, leaving it there" he said, pointing to the £20 I'd left on the bar.
2. I've had someone pull out of coming to see Brother Strut tonight in Reading, so I have a spare ticket going if anyone wants it - I'd rather give it away than see it wasted. Only catch is you need to be at Sub89 at around 7.30pm so we go in together, as they're printed tickets with my name on - not sure I can just forward them on. If you've not seen them before, they're absolutely cracking live. And they have the mighty Paul Turner on bass now too! It is advertised on Facebook, so the ticket may go - first to message gets it Cheers
3. Hoping to be there if no gigs come up! Will confirm nearer the time - I'd probably have a JV Squier, Orange Terror 500 + Barefaced TWO10 or Super Compact.
4.
Yeah don't buy these they're crap...
I've got a set of these that I've had for approx. 12 years - granted they've not been used every day in that time, but they've never let me down.... I've tried a few options for strap locks - I'd say they're a no brainer, even if they're never needed it's a relatively small fee in comparison to the damage that could be done. Fender strap blocks: http://www.dawsons.c...er-strap-blocks Like the beer lid method, but with a fender logo. These were pretty sturdy, the strap wasn't going to fall off any time soon. However they were a bit of a pain to get on & off, being quite stiff - if you're using one strap between many basses, I wouldn't recommend it. But for £3, if you don't want to change the strap pins to strap locks they're worth it. Dunlop Lok Straps (as pictured above): http://www.jimdunlop.../ergo-lok-strap Again, doesn't require changing anything on the bass. I bought these about 12 years ago after dropping my friends guitar straight onto my big toe (not pleasant) and didn't want the same happening to my bass. Some of them were a little stiff to twist, others were ok. But they're simple enough, and do the job. As someone else mentioned, thick straps can be a problem because there's no room left for them on the strap pin! Schaller strap locks: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Schaller-Security-Strap-Locks-Chrome/dp/B000L3FPUG The first set I tried that were more substantial than the Lok Straps. I found that the part that secures the strap kept coming unscrewed, which had me nervous. The way it hooks onto the part on the body also felt a little flimsy, plus rattles about a bit. I was never very happy with them in the end. Dunlop Dual Design strap locks: http://www.jimdunlop...uct/dual-design I've settled on these - I now gig regularly & have one strap between a few basses, so needed something that was quick & easy to change. They do require changing the strap pins (and possibly screws depending on size) on the bass, but are worth it - until reading this thread, I'd forgotten that I was even using them. Secure on the strap, and the two pieces fit well together so there's no rattling.
5. If it's our sound guy that we've asked to come & work with us, then sure I'll help move stuff in / out if I'm there when needed or offer to help out. I don't like to pack things up / coil cables so that I don't break (or be accused of breaking) anything or coiling cables the wrong way. If it's a sound guy provided by the venue / promoter / it's a multi band event, then it's up to them I'm afraid - we're being paid to do a job just like they are. That said, I do always try & thank the sound guys before leaving if they've done a good job.
6. If you're on a Mac & don't want to spend out on Photoshop, maybe give Pixelmator a try - it's fairly cheap, think it has a trial too: http://www.pixelmator.com/mac/ It may be more for photo editing though, but I'm sure you could go someway towards decent posters with it. You can also buy pre-made posters pretty cheap, like from here: http://graphicriver.net/search?utf8=%E2%9C%93&term=band&view=grid&sort=&date=&category=print-templates%2Fflyers&price_min=&price_max=&sales=&rating_min= You would need photoshop/similar to edit them though to fill in the blanks, or as suggested above ask someone with the software & the knowhow.
7. [Off topic] I'm in Basingstoke, if you fancy a pint whilst here drop us a message! [/Off topic]
8. Someone is after one of these in the wanted section: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/273744-sandberg-panther-special-4/
9. Sold some wall hangers to Lee - as above, very easy & pleasant transaction & would recommend Even put up with me being a bit busy & not managing to get them posted for a couple of days! Cheers
10.
Haha, that might cover materials, workshop costs and sundries
How about you do me the first one, you know, for the exposure. Then if I like it, I'll book you for another one & tell all my friends. Promise.

12.
I also used to encounter a guy who would get rather 'confused'
Ah, I forgot you've seen me jam!
13. I was bassist in a house band for a while. I had to provide the bass rig & guitar lead, but no bass or anything. I wouldn't provide a bass for anyone to play, but if someone asked to borrow one I wouldn't mind (providing they seem ok & not a pissed local!). I turned up to my first jam without a bass just to check it out, but ended up being encouraged to play & given a bass. For house band duties, we had to provide the backline, start the night off, be around if there were people needing help with the guitar (or needing turning down) & finish the night off. We were also paid for this, only a small fee (think it was £100ish for the whole band) but it covers expenses for the night. The only downside is we were a house band, so on quite a few occasions we'd get up & play 2 - 3 numbers, sit aside for the whole night then play 2 - 3 numbers whilst everyone was saying goodbye & walking out. I wanted to jam with others, not the band that I played with all the time. We were also blamed if things were getting too loud. Usually an issue with guitarists, but you're held responsible - even when it's the person playing that just needs to turn the volume on their guitar down. I love jam nights though, they're great fun - they've taken me from a bedroom bass player to a confident bassist, from blues rock bands to depping for a covers band with no practice. Without jams, I'd be nowhere.
14.
Auto play media is never ok as far as I'm concerned.
This. It's extremely annoying when a browser tab randomly starts shouting at you, or a pain in the ass on mobile. For a small, simple site, it's quite nice
15. I thought that was a Sire! Indeed, he played the fretless MusicMan on Gorée, the track about slavery. For anyone interested, the set list: Hylife B's River Papa Was A Rolling Stone Jean Pierre Gorée Son of Macbeth Encore: Never Too Much snippet Detroit / Tutu / Blast medley Think I noted everything!
16. Barefaced have a fridge out now, if you're worried about the weight - at just ~35kg, it's borderline ridiculous... I was the other way actually - have played a couple of gigs recently where the house rig was an Ampeg SVT of some variety + fridge. I was left a bit underwhelmed with the power & wanted my Barefaced cabs + Orange Terror head. Could be because the stages were both outdoors, so not quite the same as in a rehearsal room.
17. Very sorry guys, manic week - indeed, these were sold! Will update the topic now. Apologies for not replying / updating. Cheers
18. Howdy folks, Up for grabs is a set of 4 Hipshot Ultralites (HB-6 I think?), in chrome with elephant ears. Please note: These do NOT fit standard Fender headstock holes, as far as I am aware. I *think* you could buy these bushing if you wanted to, as they adapt from 14mm inside to 18mm: http://www.axesrus.c...tCode=BassBush. I'm not too knowledgable on the subject though, so please do check! I bought these for a project, but they were too small for the headstock so I swapped to Schallers instead. There is some lacquer on the inside of a couple of the washers & on the inside of one of the posts - this should come off easily enough. They were like this when I bought them, so from the previous owner. Looking for £50 posted within the UK. Based in Basingstoke if anyone wants to collect. Any questions let me know! Pics: Pics of the lacquer: Very tiny bit on here: Sizing diagram (thanks to Axes R Us):
19. 1) Don't worry about mistakes 2) Have fun 3) Get used to it
20. Whoops, replied to the wrong thread - these tuners were the ones I was interested in!
21. I may well be interested in the hipshot tuners, if you're interested in putting the original ones back on for the sale. PM me if so, no problems if not!
22. I appreciate there's a couple of threads here already, but each is different! At the moment my band doesn't have a PA - most of the gigs we've done have had PA provided, or we've used a local sound guy. But a few times the sound guys have let us down, plus it's a nightmare trying to make sure we have a PA before confirming gigs. After a week from hell trying to organise transport & PA for a gig (thanks to Gelfin for the help though!), I've decided to just take the plunge & buy one. We're a fairly loud rock & blues band, the drummer is a hard hitter. Through the PA, we need 1 x vocals & 2 x keyboards. I know next to nothing about PAs, other than if budget wasn't an issue it'd be Barefaced haha! My budget is £1,000 to cover everything except mic & mic stand. Need at least one floor monitor. Are there any decent compact systems out there that would suit? I'm considering this bundle if not, or something similar - is it any good, a good price? Would it suit keyboards? http://www.guitarguitar.co.uk/pa-live/detail.asp?stock=10031211410230#main-product-overview Mackie SRM450 v3 (2014) (Pair) Mackie ProFX12 Compact Effects Mixer Stagg SPSQ10 Set (Speaker Stand Pair With Bag) 2 x On Stage MC12-20XLR XLR-XLR Microphone Cable 20ft Unfortunately time is of the essence & the credit card is needed, so I kinda have to buy new otherwise I'd be on the hunt for bargain second hand stuff. Cheers
