1. It depends - if the rehearsal still goes ahead, then whoever is there splits it. If it's cancelled, then I'd expect the person that had to cause the cancellation (and I assume hire fee because of notice period) to at least make the offer. I guess we'd decide from there. However we do have a small kitty for the band that may cover it, if there's enough spare in it at that time.
2. Another New Moon customer here, though again not had to make a claim. Closest is I phoned them up to ask what I need to do to make a claim, and they said get a repair quote, send it to them & they'll decide on repairing or replacing. If you're going to use house insurance, do ask them specifically about the instruments, especially if you gig. As soon as I mentioned that to our provider, they wouldn't touch them - even for just inside the house.
3. When I'm using my pedalboard, I always have a little compression on - not much. I certainly miss it when I don't have it at jam nights etc. That's all I know!
4. There's a small music pub called The Ranelagh in Kemptown (near the pier I think) - been there a couple of times, good music & a great pint of ale if that's your thing: http://www.theranelagh.co.uk/
5. I spent ages getting stressed about not being able to work out songs by ear. Why can't I do that? How on earth do I do that? I'm never going to be able to! There was two key points for me: 1) Start easy - I learnt by playing along to The Datsuns, Jimmy Eat World, possibly even Scouting for girls. Status Quo, too. 2) Listen, then list again, then play along & listen. Start off just trying to find the root notes throughout the song, don't worry about riffs. Then I started visualising someone playing the song/riff parts, once I'd listened & roughly worked out the root notes. Would it be played high on the neck? Does it need shifts? Does the riff go up, or down, or all over the place? I found visualising & imagining playing it the biggest help. I also would watch youtube playalongs, see how others were doing it & try to mimic/learn from that. It takes time, though - just like everything.
6. Interesting - did you tell them it would be an only cab, or that you wanted to stack it vertically? The logo usually (or used to be) parallel to the handle. I kinda like it your way
7. For the PA, I bought a cheap suitcase from Sports Direct & kept some of the foam packaging the mixer came in. The mixer goes in one side with the foam, the cables etc. go in the zip compartment the other side. For everything else, I won a Carlsberg gym bag at my local pub in a raffle years ago - everything fits in the nicely. Sorted!
8. I have two of their straps, bought from Bass Gear. I absolutely love them - soft & comfortable, the nicest straps I've ever had.
9. In the mens room after I'd just played a gig, I had the following: Bloke A: Ah man, that was some really nice playing - solid grooves, nice fills, made it look effortless & so easy Bloke B: I thought you looked like you were completely winging it all the way through! Bloke B was correct... But interesting to have two very different comments!
10.
Thanks for posting. I just got tickets forhis London gig on 29th June. Saw him in Camden last time he was here. He puts on a great show.
Camden was a great gig. I didn't know what to expect & was worried it would be a bit too much overly technical slapping, but wasn't that at all. Got tickets for the 29th too!
11. We were booked by a promoter to play a pub one Sunday afternoon (I think unpaid), 2 x 45 minute slots at around 2pm I think. When we got there, they asked us to play before and after the footie that was on at 3pm. Errrrm... Sorry, but we've got better things to do than sit there & wait for 2 hours before playing again. We offered to play for an hour before the footie, or we'll head home - they understood fortunately, and we played for an hour beforehand. Not worked with the promoter since, who was apparently told about the footie split.
12. I played HRH Blues festival earlier this year, that was superbly run by the chap in charge, despite him not having the two stage hands he was promised. We played an all day event at a nearby pub, and were meant to be on at about 3 I think. First band were meant to be on at 1, yet when we got there at 1 they were still setting up & sound checking. We had another gig to be at by 5.30 which the organiser knew. By the time they got started, there was no hope of them getting us on in time - especially by soundchecking the same drumkit between bands. We told the organiser we didn't think timing was going to work out, he said he'll make sure it does. It was still a bit of a shambles, so we said it's not going to work, we're off. He said he'd get us on without fail - we gave him our latest time, and he made it by a minute. We haven't been back there yet, despite being asked several times... We did have our set cut short at a festival that took us 5 hours to get to due to traffic, because they were a bit behind & hit the midnight curfew. It would have been nice if they'd told us, but the compere just jumped up at 11.55 and asked the crowd if they want one more.
13. Where were you practicing? Being Alton, was it in Basingstoke (Swervjam?) I'd say not to expect the same sound from any two different places, due to room shape / space / size / amp positions / whatever.
14.
Maybe we need a crèche?
I thought it was a day crèche - for bass players?
15. I'm hoping to pop to twyford tomorrow. Any other recommendations apart from those mentioned? I should be able to make the bass gallery on Thurdsy too.
16. Hit up some jam nights & enjoy it for a bit
17.
Ok - so I'm biased but BassGear is in Twyford which isn't very far from Hampshire at all and has a big range of amps and two demo rooms
I've been meaning to pop there for ages after buying a rather nice Harvest leather strap at last years LBGS. Maybe I shall make a visit at long last!
18. So, I finally have a week off work, and have nothing planned as of yet. I'm hoping to pop down to Barefaced in Brighton, which will probably mean a visit to GAK too. I'm looking at trying some new gear - in particular, amp heads but trying a few basses along the way would be great. I'm based in Basingstoke, so ideally looking for places in/near Hampshire. Does anyone have any recommendations of places to check out? Cheers Edit: Ideally I'd like to take my Barefaced cab along to try anything with...
19. I only play if I'm at band practice / gigging / jam night. I very rarely pick up the bass at home. I used to, before I started jamming with others / gigging.
20. Where abouts is the wedding? For those on mobile who don't have the location info from profiles
21. One of my first amps was an Ashdown 15" combo, which was a weighty beast. I had to lug it upstairs back to my bedroom everytime I used it. Since then, I've always considered weight to be an important factor. Maybe being "young" (28), I have a wide range of options available, compared to the "good old days" when everything was big & heavy because technology said so. But yes, weight is a BIG factor for me - when I'm carting it up & down stairs, in & out of venues + vehicles, I'd rather it be as easy as possible. Especially as when I started gigging regularly I couldn't drive so needed something small / portable. That said, if I found something that was the sound for me, I'd go for it & put up with the weight. But so far, Barefaced have been the sound for me...
22. I phoned my local music shop, an Orange dealer, about getting my Tiny Terror repaired after it fell out of the van on tour. They gave me the number of a guy they recommend who's in the area, who'll be much cheaper/better than going down the official routes. Very happy! Whilst I've bought a lot of stuff from them in the past, they didn't know that over the phone - I could have been anyone.
23.
I don't - probably best to drop Leszek a mail. I'm in no hurry for mine, 'cos I've got this one :-)
I assume you're sending that one back when the new one gets here? What are the chances they'll let it stay in the UK to be sent round to a few basschatters to try out? Looks very interesting
24.
Has anyone tried it next to an Ampeg fridge? Be interested to see how it faired there!
Not quite, but twice I've played through an Ampeg SVT + Fridge, and both times wished I had my Terror 500, Super Compact + RetroTWO10...
