  1. All of them look ugly and unprofessional. I have a Thomann branded one at home and it works barely.
  2. What would a JJ offer that dual soapbars don't? Seems unnecessary retrograde to me?
  3. Where in the 20th century every decade had it's own mind-blowing new music that the parents would scold their kids for listening to, from the 80s to the 90s it became more about technology, refining techniques and pushing existing styles to their extremes.
  4. 7. Different colour silk per string looks horrible. My favourite strings don't use silk at all, so I got lucky there! 8. You can rock out with your bass at any hight, Entwistle for instance. I like to play at about the hight of my pockets and being 1.92cm have not had much difficulty finding good straps. EMGs sound good at 9v, great at 18v IMO. I can't seriously tell the difference between 18 and 24v on them (my 2 main basses have EMGs). Good thread!
  5. Great for finished maple (lacquered or what have you). Maybe some windex on a microfibre towel or a toothbrush to get the gunk from the frets. Treat unfinished, oiled or waxed maple boards with tru-oil, gunstock oil or Danish oil. The neck can be waxed with gunstock wax, like MusicMan does. I used Birchwood Casey gunstock oil and wax on my SR5.
  6. It is not the same substance, please do not use food items on your bass 😆
  7. Today is the 11th of January, is it really coming up on summer already? I'd say there is time to train a replacement yet
  8. Thick Blue Line Police Box Overdirt Hyaaaargh Why did I walk in to this room again?
  9. Blimey Rick Astley hardly aged at all! Good on him. I didn't really like any of the artists on, quite a dull affair.
  10. All the effects are optimised for guitar, I think bass just gets the clean pass-through. Andertons video mentions it in between lines.
  11. I use an iRig with iPad to practice with headphones. Some people seem to enjoy a vox amplug, some hate it. There's really any number of solutions for any budget.
  12. DR strings for me. I like to work hard do I have the DDTs on my regular basses. For normal use I'd recommend the Sunbeams or lo-riders for a bit of fatness.
  13. The F1005 or D5 look like they'd make a decent alternative to my Spector. Still a more modest design than my B.C.Rich Beast bass.
  14. It looks stupid on you. Get a fiver as well.
  15. Looks fierce, good job! Thanks for taking us through the process with you.
  16. Rage against the Machine's generic but effective 'flip you I won't do what you tell me' ? edit: great bit of sensorship. I suppose no protest shall survive our looming sense of common decency.
  17. Running with the Devil, but slowed down a bit?
  18. Good input here all-round! I got my boy a used Yamaha dtxpress2 kit this year for his birthday at around your budget. Came with a seat, a pair of sticks, and a high-hat stand. Roland's gear is comparable in most ways but Yamaha is apparently easier to upgrade separate components or the computer of. Note! Floor-transferred noise is still a PITA if upstairs on wooden floorbeams. If the kit isn't going to sit on concrete/in the basement or whatever, look in to building a tennis ball platform. Fun to make and worth a days DIY. With all the cautions out of the way, it's fun to have a kit around the place. The kids love it, their pals love it, even the Mrs had a go once or twice! I got Samson SR850 headphones as they are cheap and do a great job. Sometimes I connect to our electronic piano through headphones out > aux in to play a bit amplified, it doesn't need much to sound o.k. As with most instruments but with drums especially, the real value is in lessons. Learning to play along with hits and favourite songs at any level is fun and gives great energy. We haven't regretted it for a moment.
  19. Gnarly!
  20. No clue, might be Steve Morse?
  21. I understand the cool laid back sound of the music though it's not for me, but how do they end up with that singer? A mismatch if you ask me.
  22. There are plenty wider spaced 5 strings available. That said any instrument takes getting used to and adapting your technique. Have fun!
  23. To be honest, she's doing lead vocals here as well. Awesome thrash trio from Brasil!
  24. There's generally less distortion in thrash metal bass than assumed. Too much distortion kills attack and that's what you don't want as the music is usually too quick to let notes ring and develop. Low boosted a bit, mid cut to taste, treble boosted on the amp and the gain cranked near clipping, tone open on the bass. Roundwounds struck with gusto near the bridge pickup with a plectrum or fingers in typewriter-ish style. Any bass will do although a MM humbucker may need more tweaking than others.
  25. Get the ones that appeal to you the most. I have the Samsons and they are fine. The cushions are plenty big to go around big man ears but the material is rather plasticy pleather. That got a bit sweaty last summer. The Sonarworks free app feature them so there's more than enough to tweak about their sounds if you want.
