Sunbeams .v. Fatbeams - What differences have you found?
lee650 replied to Hamster's topic in Accessories and Misc
Great stuff thought you,d like the sunbeams, mind you after your description i might try a set of fatbeams, do they have the smooth feel like the sunbeams I've put Sunbeams on the Stingray, and Fatbeams on the Sub4. I'm really loving the Sunbeams Maybe it's my ears but the bass sounds louder. I read DR's blurb about their string's metal content giving better output - maybe they're right? I'm getting the exact range of sound sound I want - very satisfied. The only way to describe the Fatbeams is that they're a stainless steel Sunbeam - all the warmth and lovliness but with a bit more treble. -
Ive read lots of good things about the nordstrand nj,s, to that end ive just bought some and are currently being fitted to my jazz, ill let you know how i find them, they are a bit cheaper than the SD,S and are built like the old fender pickups with good quality materials etc, Bass direct do them. cheers- lee I've been looking at the 5 Stack and the passive single in SD's "Pickup Sourcebook", it says the stick isn't a direct retrofit but the singlecoil might be, I'll need to check their website for dims. I don't really know what else is out there as far as other brands go, that's kinda what I was hoping to find out about on here. And suggestions on where to startd brushing up?

Sunbeams .v. Fatbeams - What differences have you found?
lee650 replied to Hamster's topic in Accessories and Misc
Hi there Ive been using the sunbeams for about a year now, they have a lovely rich tone, and a great smooth feel ,i do think they may be more what your after as they have a smooth treble thats not too zingy, but retains the high end when they die off, the fat beams i hav,nt tried but would like too they are steel while the sunbeams are nickel, i have sunbeams on my sterling and they really balance out the sound (especially as it has a maple neck), i used the hi beams for a long time then started using d,addarios as i have a preference for nickel. Its a shame ive just moved house and gotrid of a couple of old sets, otherwise id have sent them to you to try(after a good boiling) i am thinking of trying the fatbeams on my warwick 5 as it could use a bit more bite, but im very happy with the sunbeams. Let me know what you think of the fatbeams if you get both- all the best- lee I use the Hi Beams on my 5 string Lakland and they're superb on that. I use the 5 string for different music than the Stingray which is for rock/blues, which is why I'm looking for a little less "zing" than the Hi Beams. Have you tried the Sunbeams at all? -

Some installed pics for your perousal, will get proper pics later bump Hi everyone My jazz is off to the tech tomorrow for new stuff to be fitted, so as of this week the current pickups and circuit will be available, Emg jv jazz pickups are the vintage style with exposed pole pieces designed to replicate the faded sound of a vintage instrument but with no noise, they are very diffrent to the usual EMG pickups as they have alnico 5 magnets ( as opposed to ceramic) and have a lovely warm fat sound with a very prominent midrange, they would actually be a perfect replacement for fretless fender jazz, particularly MIM or the Squire modified fretless jazz as they have a certain tone regardless of instrument i.e they dont rely too much on the sound of wood. Also an EMG BTS bass/treble on seperate pots,(it is set at vol, vol, treble, bass 4 pots) does what it says on the tin, it has two dip switches inside to set the treble frequency there are four to choose from, not sure what they are but info should be available online, comes with all pots and chrome knurled knobs, this system will really pimp up your jazz or any bass with jazz style pickups as i said would be great on fretless. Im after £95 posted for the lot, the pickups are £175 new and the circuit £80 so that sounds about right to me, giz a PM if your interested or need any info. thanks for looking- lee [attachment=14257:P9070005.JPG][attachment=14259:P9070004.JPG] Will get some proper pics up when they are out and i have them, this is what they look like installed, i have a four control layout with a jack on the bottom which i like, i also installed a battery compartment, a dual concentric will be easy t fit and not expensive if you want to keep the three pot arrangemant and the battery fits fine under the control plate(but it is a pain when changing batteries which isnt often with the EMG,S low power draw). hope this answers any queries people have had these are a bargain and will benefit your MIM & CIJ jazzes. Hi kevin how you doin!! i like the idea of these hellborg strings, im currently using the sunbeam nickels which i love very rich warm sound, any idea how they would compare with the hellborgs, the sunbeams dont have the brightest topend but stay lovely when they die off, unlike the d,addario xls i used to use which sound great for a short time then completely die. How do the hellborgs slap? thanks for your info mate im thinking of getting a set for my jazz and musicman- cheers- lee Just got a set of these, they're really good, a nice 'feel' to them, the tension is ideal for vibrato tecniques and fast fingerstyle playing, and the sound is beautiful. They feel a bit odd to start with, just the one winding which is especially noticeable on the E and A strings. They don't do a B or a C string at the moment, though seemingly they are going to introduce a B string soon, so I have a B and a C from a set of Lo-rider nickels. I got them from Thomman, ordered Monday and arrived Wednesday all for £25, that's pretty good serv

+1 Abe plays nothing but nicely slapped minims on Randy crawfords "you might need somebody" and sliding down to a tenth double stop on "trade winds" just makes me smile a mile wide, i love Abes playing more than the 1000,s of wonderful musical talented bass players around in this world, he,s played on some muzak stuff buthe,s also done pop, jazz soul, funk, the man does it all, with a humble attitude and love for every project he plays on, his stuff for george benson and quincy jones is sublime, he is a classically trained guitarist (at berkely) and its amazing how he brings that rasguedo technique to the bass, i find his playing very inspirational and have always found great joy in his lines, and blow me his son is just as amazing as a drummer in the genes i think , sorry if im ranting but im a big fan. enjoy the music- lee Abe does it for me, I just like the guys approach and the way he fits incredible technique into the song so musicall

Many happy returns dabootsy!!! PMT is what my wife gets every month isnt it, usually after ive announced my latest GAS attack! Ive never in all my days playing known a music shop set up instruments i asume they think when you buy it you,ll set it up to your specs anyway so why bother. oh and our fellow basschatter is probably right a lot of music store employees probably dont know how too, i certainly dont and ive been playing 18 years, id rather pay someone to do it properly. Hope youve had a great day mate, treat yourself to a few pints and plan your next bass adventure. all the best- lee Who are PMT?

Yeah i know what you mean, sound to die for though, the days of the big rigs are numbered (thank god) Ian offered it to me but it would be just as heavy as the Eden so it's not a good idea.

Hi josh At least you know what your buying, as your getting another proline to match your existing one, bernies def your man though, delivery shouldnt be a problem and you wont have to buy a GB as ive heard they are very alluring( they certainly look it). not being able to drive is a bummer dont end up like me, being old and not able to drive ive been very lucky to have had a pro career as lond as i did without driving!!!. just imagine your sound when you have the two together, take care mate- lee Hence the hesitation, Bass Ferret kindly suggested it as well, but I doubt I could ever convince any family member to drive me out that far for something so "Little"
