1. Bump - these guys are still looking
2.
You're mates with Adrian? At The Gates we're my world when I was a teenager...
They're playing in Leeds tomorrow at Damnation
3.
ah black metal shenanigans... I had a mate called Black Metal Steve when I was about 17 who tried to burn down a church in colchester... only when he got up on the roof it fell through and he broke both his legs.... ended up being held together with metal plates for a couple of years... .. think he's an accountant these days.
outstanding
4. I'm not sure Fenriz ever did anything, or at least was never charged as far as I know, but they did come out with NS statements in the mid 90s
5. For that kind of investment is it possible to take a day off work and travel to the shop to give it a try before parting with cash?
6.
Has much happened in the Black Metal scene for the past 20 years? I saw Emperor at the LA2 back in the late 90s and they were awesome... I guy I jammed with a few times at collage is now in Mayhem. .. love a bit of black metal.
There's some great acts out there, particularly from the UK: Anaal Nathrakh Voices Winterfylleth Wodensthrone Fen <Code> The Infernal Sea Verdelet Aklash Wolves In The Throne Room from the States are definitely worth a listen too.
7. I'm a big fan of black metal, but do struggle sometimes with the political outlook and illegal actions of some of the bands, Burzum, Emperor and Darkthrone particularly.
8.
J.S.Bach is an excellent source, too.
Yes, I've recently started working on my reading again and am using Cello Suite no. 1 to learn from, really quite satisfying. I was encouraged to read better by a drummer we use who plays in the pit for a lot of shows, I'm hoping to pick up more work when I can read to a decent level.
9. Frank Turner in London on the 26th of this month. I don't get to many gigs I'm not playing these days, so really looking forward to it.
10. Just wonderful playing and singing
11.
Leo said that they were the best guitars he ever made and he should know.
I'm a big G&L fan, but in fairnes he was trying to flog them at that point. G&L GAS is terrible, I'd like an L1505 in red burst, an MJ5 in turquoise sparkle, an LB100 in vintage white, a JB2 in natural etc.........
12. I'm surprised they're recording a new album to be honest, I read an article recently about why it's just not worth big, legacy acts like Metallica making new records. Basically, recording costs a lot of money and these days you simply don't make as much money from album sales, it's all about the live shows where the money's made, and Metallica fans don't want to hear new songs at gigs, they want to hear the classics from the 80s and 90s and will pay well to hear them. So why bother spending a lot of money recording an album which is probably going to be derided as nothing like as good as their first five records and then maybe bring out one or two songs at gigs sprinkled amongst the rest of the set. I do agree with you that I'd love to see them do a new record with a producer that won't stroke their egos, tell them they're old, fat, lazy and beat a decent record out of them.
13. There's nothing irrational about G&L GAS
14. My main covers band is great, first band I've been in where we all genuinely like each other and get on. It might help that we don't have a permanent drummer, rather a choice of deps depending on who's free, so that reduces the likelihood of arguments by 25%!
15. We do it in C# as the guitarist learned it in C#, whilst in standard tuning - not realising it was recorded tuned down half a step, he just thought there were some funny chords in it So, I was playing it on a four string in drop D and now play it on a five string in standard
16. I remember a Come Dine With Me where one of the contestants was Blobby Williams in overweight Take That tribute Take Fat.
17.
This would be their dialed in 'Marcus Miller' tone.
Quite. Which is fine when the guitarist is playing a strat through a Vox, somewhat different when they've got a Les Paul and a Marshall.
18. I have a suspicion it's partly down to both guitarists and bassists no knowing how to make their sound fit into a live mix, there are enough players who's live amp settings are exactly the same as their in isolation, practice settings, because that's "their sound". This is often a mid-scooped, bass biased sound, which in a live mix sounds muddy and incoherent. Standing next to their amp, they can hear the sound they're used to, but can't hear themselves, so the only option is to turn up louder and use brute force to be heard.
19. Better than Friday, pretty much a standard pub gig: Very friendly, very drunk Irish man wanting to talk our ears off whilst setting up, inhebriated, heavily tattooed local dancing madly by himself (and sometimes with a tree) from the start, small audience of local barflys. All in all, fun show, they enjoyed the rock numbers more than the dance ones too, so was nice to break out some of the more rocking ones.
20. The ones I'm most enjoying at the moment are: Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie A Man After Midnight by Abba Everybody Dance by Chic Don't Leave Me This Way by Thelma Houston De ja Vu by Beyonce
21.
There is a whole generation of guitar and bass players who literally cannot do anything other than put their fingers where they are told to by a piece of tab.
Once upon a time I was one of those guys, the music industry getting tab sites shut down was one of the best things to happen to my playing.
22. Late and brief, we were playing for Central Sussex Conservatives and got there for 8, to start at 9. When we arrived they all filed into the hall for whatever the event was, and an hour the later main course was brought out. It carried on in this vein and we actually started at 11 and just played for an hour. We didn't stay any later than we would have done anyway, but the sitting around waiting was quite tedious. TBH, they didn't need a band, the people who did stay really enjoyed it, but wasn't a large proportion of the people there; was really just a waste of their money due to the poor organisation. Sound wasn't very good either - flat, hard wall about 10 metres in front of us and not a lot of bodies in the room. We played pretty well, but it wasn't the most fun gig we've done, definitely felt like work last night. Still, got paid anyway, or at least will be paid when the cheque clears - don't you hate it when clients want to pay by cheque or bank transfer on the night. I must talk to the band leader about changing the payment terms to payment in advance for private events.
23. Awesome cave
24.
If you have the connection to audition for a functions band go for it. Over here busy functions band opportunities are rarely advertised to the public. Blue
I suspect that's the same over here, most of ads I see for function bands are for new start ups, established acts have a list of deps, one of whom is probably willing to step into the roll full time if offered.
25. I got my first bass - obligatory Squier Affinty Precison - for my 17th, and then for my 18th got my second, an Ibanez K5. From then on I was sold on five strings and played the K5 for about four years. I switched back to fours, after picking one up and suddenly finding the fretboard a lot more "open" and easier to find the notes without an extra string. I played fours exclusively for about eight years until about six weeks ago when I did a trade for a five string. I'm now completely sold back on five strings, and find I use the low B quite often, just for economy of movement and to occasionally chuck in a low D or similar for effect. My main point however is that I think the few years I spent playing a five when I was younger has made playing a five now a lot easier, and made it feel like "home".
