1.
Buying.
Did you arrange the courier?
2. That's what I use, spectacular bit of kit and with the HD350 I have, I've been amp GAS free for over a year
3. Cool video, I'd been wondering about the differences between the ceramic and ALNICO versions for a while. Where these recorded in Series or parallel? I think I liked the 2005 model with the ceramic pickup best, it sounded the most focused and clear without being overbearing; I did like the 2013 version too, and whilst clearly a good tone the classic was my least favorite of the three. If you were to record some more, I'd love to hear more of the differences between the low Bs, as that's really what makes or breaks a five string
4.
The first few albums were superb, but then they went a bit too artsy-fartsy-soundscapey-mallarkey for my liking. The bass sound on Celestial was utterly superb.
Yeah, I never really got on with Wavering Radiant; I really liked In The Absence Of Truth though and the first three records are just gold
5.
I do love them but I may leave the old t-shirt at home for a while, had a few people come up to the stage to take photos of it during the last gig I played wearing it
The name thing is a bugger, but sod it, I love this band
6. Not that Isis, this Isis, and specifically their bassist Jeff Caxide http://youtu.be/DWLNYjE9_Vw Great feel, groove and tone and I particularly love the use of delay from about 5:40ish This is a cracker too from the following album http://youtu.be/hzy1rEyHtbE
7. That's just ace (I'm youngish - 30)
8.
Oh no, it's just history isn't it.... Company gets good, people buy loads Company gets great Owner of company gets offer of massive buyout Owner says fair enough New owners ship manufacturing somewhere Company drops in quality. Not saying it WILL happen but if the cycle of history has taught us anything.....
I'm not knocking them, but I think you may be buying into Basschat hype a bit on that, I mean, how well known are they amongst bassist at large rather than the people who post here?
9. Great video, for me it was Warwick -> Modulus -> Spector -> Roscoe Though, I didn't really like the slap sound of the Warwick
10. Going for the obvious one, almost any other drummer to Lars Ulrich for Metallica. Based on his work on the new Megadeth album, preferably Chris Adler from Lamb Of God, or former Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo - when he filled in for Lars at Download whatever year it was, he played the tightest version of Creeping Death Metallica have ever performed
11. First gig of the year last night, a wedding for a lovely young couple; they were big Foo Fighters fans, so we played a bunch of their songs which went down really well. Was a bit of a back to front set, as the bride, groom and a fair bit the audience were rock fans, we played the dance/party stuff in the first set and put the rockier songs in the second. It was odd playing the dance tracks to not very many people, but that does seem to be the curse of the first set. Other than me buggering up the start of You Give Love A Bad name and the guitarist buggering up the start of Under The Bridge it went really well, apart from one thing. Echoing 12String's post on the last page, there was a lad who seemed really friendly, was really into the music, but had just had far too much to drink. He came over just after we'd finished setting up and he must've told the drummer that he could play, as he let him have a go on the kit and was awful. Just awful - I videoed a bit of it for prosperity and as a reminder to never let punters use our gear. During the first set, he kept coming over to try and shake the singer's hand etc, which I'm sure in his drink addled mind was just him being friendly and wanting to tell us how much he was enjoying it, but it does make it hard to play. The singer was always polite, but I could see his patience wearing thin. This came to a head when he came over into our area and was stumbling very close to three pint glasses on the floor, when the singer tried to politely, but firmly, get him back onto the dancefloor he snapped and started throwing a load of abuse and stormed out. He was back and smiling by the end of the first set, so all okay there we thought. During the break he was swinging a little girl round on the dancefloor and knocked over the singer's music stand, which had his mic on it, fortunately I caught it before it hit the floor, the bloke -oblivious. He then came back to speak to us again, and once again we tried to get him out of the stage area, the singer couldn't have been more polite to him, but again he snapped "don't bullshit me, you just want me to f*** off don't you?". The singer again tried to make it clear he didn't, he was happy to talk to him, just could they do it on the other side of the stage. More abuse with him storming out, this time accidently kicking a pint of water over the singer's pedals - THE WHOLE REASON WHY WE WANTED HIM OFF THE STAGE IN THE FIRST PLACE. Singer, concerned with it causing a sour atmosphere at the client's wedding goes off to try and make peace with the drunken buffoon, but he's having none of it, spits the dummy and goes home, I felt a bit sorry for his girlfriend, who he dragged off with him, who clearly didn't want to leave. Second set went much better without him there and the bride and groom were really aplogetic about him. As it turns out the pillock worked for the groom, so I think it's lucky the groom will be on honeymoon Monday morning rather than at work, as if I'd got drunk, made a fool of myself and created an awkward atmosphere at my boss's wedding I'd probably be onto jobsite first thing the next day. It was a lovely lookiny room we played in, apologies for he slightly odd angle - I wasn't drinking, but you'd be forgiven for thinking so from the photo [Img]http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y175/Ghost_Upon_The_Stage/20160130_190306_zpsancav5dz.jpg" class="ipsImage" />
12. Since discovering they exist this afternoon, an Alusonic S-Special 5 [Img]http://www.alusonic.com/img/ssp5/interav.jpg" class="ipsImage" />
13. Can you go the other way with the SLO neck? Put a Stingray profile neck on a Stirling?
14. That's just fantastic news
15. Unless you have a debt you need to clear, or a bill that needs paying, don't do it. It's an asset, so selling it will bring in a little cash in the short term but you can only sell it once, so better to try and reduce your costs elsewhere if you can.
16. If I wasn't in a gigging band I'd be writing my own stuff for a solo project - I have ideas I kick around a bit at the moment, but I put a little time into this as the vast majority of my playing time is spent working on songs for the covers band sets or improving my theory.....to be a better bass player. If I were to leave my gigging band it would give me a lot more time to devote to writing on guitar.
17.
I play a 5 string with everything. I just find it overall more comfortable to play and I like having the option of lower notes/being able to play the same notes but higher up the neck. Doing the latter gives the notes a different sound to my ears so it's a good thing to be able to have.
Sums it up for me
18.
all this really isn't healthy for anyone viewing :-D
Indeed, I have a shiny new credit card and Mr Baxter currently has a five string Wal for sale......
19. Good news The important part is what lovely new bass do you have winging it's way to you?
20.
Indeed - its actually really hard to buy a really poor bass nowadays. I'm just wondering though, what made you buy a K5 in the first place? Was it something about the bass... or was it Fieldy?
Another student of my teacher had one, and my teacher recommended it as a really good five string for the money. What made the other student buy one I can't say. I wasn't that fussed on Korn back then (and even less so now), I don't think I bought an album until after I bought the bass. So it wasn't Fieldy himself that made me go for it; though I imagine there was some "if it's good enough for Fieldy...." on top of the recommendation.
21. The link to CAB Howie posted earlier states you shouldn't return it to the shop, but take it to the police station and get a crime number. I'd e-mail the shop back with that link and tell them that's what you'll be doing and will expect a refund when you provide them with the crime number.
22. Hopefully their timing is better when drumming than when train driving
23. We don't have a single drummer in our band, it's myself, the singer, guitarist and then a small pool of three or four drummmers who we call upon depending on who's available. Last night we rehearsed with one of the band's former drummers from few years ago, also he and I have been in bands together in the past. Wow. I'd forgotten how much I like playing with him, almost immediately we slipped into a groove and were playing off each other, it was like he'd never been gone. He's got one show with us at the end of the month, but hopefully we'll be able to get him on a lot more this year, so long as his work commitments (he's a train driver) don't clash. It's amazing how happy a drummer can make a bassist
24.
Really fun and satisfying tune to play that one, I didn't really care for the song until I learned the bass part.
I was much the same
25.
I think so - Ibanez don't really do bad basses at any price point. From what I've read, they don't sound like Fieldy unless you roll all the mids out... which I wouldn't do anyway. Trouble is, even if I did like it, or even find one to try, there's still the issue of that inlay. It's a complete deal breaker.
I used to have a K5, it was my second bass, when the neck was damaged falling off a stand I bought another one with the insurance money. They were the older natural finish ones, before they added the chambers; looking back they very well made instruments, I wasn't wild about the 12th fret inlay, but lived with it. I'd happily have another one so long as I could budget in an electronics upgrade as neither the stock pickups or pre-amp were spectacular, but it would make a great starting point for a project instrument.
