You can buy the labels quite cheaply online :-) Or about £3 a device.. (PS there is no legal reason to have kit PAT tested, just a bit of a scam IMHO..). See the HSE website for confirmation..
Some venues, particularly hotels and other Wedding venues do insist on it however

Joni kindly sent me his sound clips, the bass sounds brilliant - like a jazz, but more modern and hi-fi. It unsurprisingly reminds me of the Mayones be4 I used to have, which also had EMG single coils, but the graphite neck seems to add some more clarity and immediacy to the sound. Basically if I had the cash this bass would be on it's way to me, GLWTS

This, utterly irredeemable. http://youtu.be/AV8N44HzfBQ

Albums you think are great but are critically panned

Metallica - St Anger Well, the first half at least; I like the snare sound, I like the guitar tone, I like they were trying to revist their thrash roots. Cymabls sound sh*te though and the second half of the album is remarkably ropey. -
I like to pluck just below the pickup, towards the bridge (although it varies a bit, often I pluck right over it too). The thing is I'm used to using a pickup as a reference/resting place (from using a Stingray) so I tend to put tiny thumbrests below the Precision pickup. Like this:
I like that, it would suit me well

If you don't understand to a very fine detail how different woods, neck joints, body construction, electronics, pickups and hardware interact - and let's face it, beyond skilled luthiers there's not a lot of us that actually do - it might be worth taking the brief to a luthier and letting them make the choices. Tell them how you want the neck to feel, how you want it to sound, how you want it to look, the max you want it to weigh, how much you can spend and leave the rest up to them. I appreciate that might take some of the fun out of it but you're more likely to end up with an instrument that will serve you for a long time.

Matt Freeman (the person, as opposed to the instrument)
I've never heard any of the albums he's played on but I have seen some solos on YouTube. Always meant to check him out further, thanks for reminding me! Good timing actually as I'm working hard trying to get my pick playing chops together. Any suggestions which albums to hear first? It's disappointing that Squier discontinued his sig P bass. Really fancied one in the cream..
...And Out Come The Wolves is probably the best starting point with Rancid, though I think Life Won't Wait is probably my favourite. After that check out Let's Go! and Indestructible. The last two records (Let The Domino's Fall and Honor Is All We Know) haven't been quite so good, plus Matt seems to have reigned in his playing a bit on those. Rancid (2000) is a bit of a curve ball, it's got some great songs on it, but is a different beast to the rest of their back catalogue, as they decided to write a Hardcore record as oposed to a punk one. -
One of the best things you can do is change your strings, amazing the difference a new set of strings makes

Bearing in mind my EBS 2x12 used to belong to you, how does it compare? -
Aaarrrgghhh those pickups being out of alignment makes my skin itch. Lovely colour for a Bongo though
If any of you had tried fEARless, you wouldn't be having this debate. Jus' sayin'.
Just watched this video, and now I want one http://youtu.be/O-YUbQyK5Ls -
Opeth - Blackwater Park I still remember the first time I heard it, and immediately thought, "yup, this is my favourite band now", lead to many repeat listenings. I'd actually rate Still Life a better record, but that was the one that kicked off my love of Opeth. Also, even though it's been out less than a year, I've been remarkably obsessed with Mariner by Cult Of Luna and Julie Christmas.

Is there a UK amp manufacturer who make something that sounds like GK or EBS? Most of the ones I can think of make valve amps, or valve sounding amps - Matamp, Orange, Ashdown etc and I want something with a solid state sound.

Same as Jack, depending on where and when I could be up for this
About £2.5k, then? (Plus another few hundred to get it sent to the UK?) I think the Monarch P looks gorgeous and, if I had the money, would gladly buy one. I would definitely rather spend the cash on this, a new instrument of the highest quality, than a 40-50 year old piece of crap that should really be put in the bin. I wouldn't buy anything with failing frets, failing electronics, failing and rusting hardware, flaking paintwork, and very ordinary construction.
At today's exchange rate, $4k = £3302.78 Plus say $150.00 shipping $4150, = £3302.78 +3.7% import duty = £3424.983 + 20% VAT = £4109.98 -

I'm almost certain you can temporarily export items for service/repair and then not pay duty on it upon re-import, as you've already paid the due tax on it. I'll speak to our export compliance officer at work on Monday.
The message I took from that was; 'Please make music for us so you can provide "communities" (read "developers") with a social and cultural attraction to profit from when selling our hotel/housing developments to tourists or house buyers etc... BUT DO IT QUIETLY YOU BLOODY HIPPIES!'
Yup, that was my reading of it. -
And while we're on with GK amps, is it just me but shouldn't the 4 band EQ from left to right start with the bass pot rather than the treble? Used these great amps for years but still find it strange.
Oh god yes, I have to think everytime I look at it.
-
It's too easy to knock the input gain when muting my GK MB500, but I guess that's the downside of an amp with a small footprint.
