1. Played support to The Beach Boys just before they hit the stage, 12,000 people - amazing gig! Also did a similar sized (but slightly smaller) gig supporting the Quo.
2. Hi All Thinking about investing in a decent practice setup for home. It ideally would be portable so I could bring on tour etc and practice in hotels and the like. Would be using electric bass only. My thoughts are something along the lines of: - Bass - Practice Device - Decent Set of Headphones (over ear) - MP3 Player for playing along A drum machine or metronome would be useful. What’s everybody using these days? I had a Korg Pandora a few years back but lost it in a house move! Thanks D
3. Bass > Shure Wireless > REDDI Direct Box (to PA) > Aguilar DB751 > Aguilar DB410 > Sennheiser IEM system > Ultimate Ears UE11 Pro buds
4. Brilliant gig, Flea used his shell pink Fender Jazz hybrid with a single humbucker in the Stingray position - surely going to be a Custom Shop line of these? Sparkling tone! Usual array of GK 4x10 and 1x15 cabinets too. I think I spotted a silver Modulus too used in By The Way (tuned to drop D) Catch them if you can!
5. Genz Benz - had one myself and never got on with the tone!
6.
I went through Rotosound (too tight), Thomastik (too loose) and D'addario (too tight) before setting on La Bellas. I've also played basses with Fenders on and they were pretty good. I think there is a lot of variation in tension and for me it was the La Bellas that nailed it. You just need to find the ones that suit you. See if you can pick a second hand set up in the marketplace or take a punt on some Fenders.
Ageee exactly re: your tension findings, I went through exactly the same strings before settling on 760FL LaBellas.
7. My choice would be an Aguilar Tonehammer 500 which you could find used within your budget, it could replace any larger head too for bigger gigs.
8. Class! Health to enjoy!
9. I once did three gigs in one day at the Hillsborough Oyster Festival, and broke the A string half way through gig 2 with no spare. Did a gig and a half just making do with E and D!
10. His Night Owl album is pure class!
11.
We're covering a couple of Royal Blood tracks in my 5-piece band. Obviously we are fans . The bigger band makes the songs way heavier in my opinion, and none the worse for that. I use a clean bass sound (no fx at all) for what it's worth. I kinda get why some BCers are not that impressed with Royal Blood. However, the fact is that they're popular because they have some catchy songs. That's how the music business works. It is perfectly acceptable to be into unpopular music if that's your thing instead, or indeed highly popular chart stuff which I find unpalatable. Just my £0.02.
I know - it's almost as if art is subjective! Isn't that awful?
12. BA55 DMC here - just purchased! Oh the vanity.
13. The best learning I ever got was going out and playing with other musicians at rehearsals and gigs. Made an absolute pig's ear of my first few public performances but I am thankful every day now for learning the lessons they taught me.
14. BUMP still available
15. Nice playing but YYZ is not Geddy - the middle part of the guitar solo section is missing the little 32nd note fill Geddy does near the beginning, which is on the record.
16. Mild compression in studio here (usually via valves) but no compression live forces you to even up your playing and encourages dynamics.
17. Go for it. If you don't, you will always be wondering 'what if?'
18. BUMP - will split!
19. My old Hartke combo was a giant furrball by the time my old moggie was done with it. Trimming with scissors worked to an extent but you may want to add a dab of black paint to cover the bare wood.
20. My thought is that they should really have checked that this was OK with the bride and groom before you guys. After all, the bride and groom are the ones paying and should be the only ones to place or enforce restrictions on their entertainment. FWIW I think a sound limiter at a gig is a good idea. 99% of bands are too loud.
21. Weekend bump for two super sweet cabs!
22. Slightly OT but what about those guys who relic poly finishes to resemble authentic nitro wear? Hideous!
23. Try tab where available - absolutely nothing wrong with using it and I still regularly teach it as well as use it myself. Eventually your ear will develop, there are exercises to try and aid with this but it is certainly not an overnight thing. Failing that - for working out a fast line, I find a program like Transcribe (PC) really helps. You can slow down a song and keep the same key, and also change a song's key at the same tempo - handy if you are in a band who cover a song in a different key from the original. Hope this helps
