  1. I think playing bass is like ascending flights of stairs. Sometimes you reach a plateau, but with a little direction you can find the next step and keep progressing.
  2. Had an opportunity to see Pentangle with Bert Jansch and John Renbourn a few years ago in Royal Festival Hall, London, but turned it down due to expensive flights. Wish I had seen them when they were alive. Fantastic musicians
  3. Michael - you should not be allowed to post such graphic images on this forum! Another amazing bass. Health to enjoy. Looking forward to the customary groove video!
  4. What cab are you using? The treble control on the head is set at 4khz which won't give you zingy top end in most cases. The head is tuned to sound vintage so maybe not the best choice if you are after loads of treble.
  5. DR strings are a popular choice for 'Ray users. Have you considered flatwounds? They would certainly tame the natural top end and give you a nice low end thud.
  6. Bruno Mars ranks within the top 3 gigs I've ever been to - surprisingly. Couldn't believe the quality of musicianship, arrangements, choreography, lighting and staging etc. Well impressive!
  7. I remember reading an interview with Carol Kaye where she talked about her work as a session player. Back when she was recording with the Beach Boys, the musicians and studio engineers used to laugh at the songs they were asked to record, viewing them as mainstream, temporary trash. There was actually a quote along the lines of "can you imagine people listening to this stuff in 50 years?" What is 'good' is purely subjective, and those who think that modern music won't have a lasting legacy are the small minded ones IMO.
  8. FWIW I found the TI Jazz Flats to be too loose in tension, so I moved to the LaBella 760FL which were a bit more tense (akin to rounds. Not sure if the FX are of a lighter gauge than the FL?
  9. La Bella 760FL for me. Tried TI Jazz Flats but found the tension to be too loose for my tastes. The LaBellas work perfectly.
  10. I'd really like John East preamps to have a centre detent (particularly on the Stingray controls) That's certainly something I will look for in future preamps.
  11. I guess something like a Hiwatt/Marshall/Fender all valve head would do the trick. A lot of the early guitar heads were used for bass purposes back in the 60s etc.
  12. Old thread bump - I'm on the lookout for one of these if anyone would consider parting with theirs
  13. Saw Paul Weller last night. Great show but didn't play any of his hits bar 'Into Tomorrow' and The Jam's 'Start'. Nice to make the pilgrimage to the reverend Modfather nonetheless!
  14. I think it's an EB Musicman Sterling that Wonky has - still surprised at how EB allowed the blurring of brand names!
  15. Had one as a spare - loved it and in fact it became my main amp for a while! Sold it as a change in circumstances meant I no longer needed a spare amp. Highly recommended tho. Very simple to use EQ was the main bonus for me - too many amps nowadays have that ridiculous active tone stack where every control impacts on the other. I'm a set it and forget it sort of player and so this suited.
  16. Saw Chic last week. Amazing! I knew it would be a good gig but it far surpassed my expectations. Got a spot in the front row (standing) right in front of Jerry Barnes and one of the lovely female lead singers. Couldn't have been better situated as we got a great impression of the bass/drums grooving before it even hit the FOH. On top of that - I shook Jerry Barnes' hand afterwards! Superb night.
  17. Considering the same for my 'ray. As I play over the pickup, I've been looking at a lower tension set (i.e. TI Jazz flats). Been listening to a lot of Bernard Edwards recently - although I saw Chic last week and Jerry Barnes was using an active Jazz with rounds!
  18. I've been bringing my bass guitar abroad recently and find most airlines are very helpful when it comes to accommodating musical instruments. Been asked did I want to bring it on board at no extra cost etc. My advice would be to ask nicely and hope for the best!
  19. Just bought a couple of hockey pucks thanks to this thread - always struggled with the handle getting in the way on top of a cab when resting a micro amp on it. One puck either side of the handle and the problem will be solved. The joys of BC!
  20. Yes - two very successful experiences recently. Would recommend
  21. The Fender Custom Shop 63 pickup has a nice bit of breakup with volume and tone maxed. Pair that with rounds and I think you will be half way there.
  22. My Recents: Undertones - My Perfect Cousin KT Tunstall - Suddenly I See Killers - Somebody Told Me Lovely bass sounds
  23. Haven't watched the video but IMO a pro player should be able to read and play by ear equally as well.
  24. If Ashdown don't make the cab you want, I've always found them very helpful and open when it comes to custom orders. EG if you need a 4 ohm 4x10 or something, they will make it for you. Worth a note just in case you don't see the exact cab combination you are after,
