1. I just read in todays paper that one of the writers has tickets for a show, no idea which, and he has to turn up in person with ID and the card used to purchase the ticket in order to get in. Seems reasonable to me.
2. As you mention Youtube, why not get a list of songs you want to learn, and then play along. I do this and although the songs themselves may not stretch my abilities, learning more new songs in my opinion makes me a better bassist for the type of music that I do. I also pick up some tips on good runs, patterns etc this way, so I guess it must be improvement. I`d really knock a 3-4 hour practice on the head though, I think all but the most dedicated would be likely to run out of steam after a couple of hours.
3. Not super light, but the SVT 3-PRO, with the VT plugged into it would be awesome. I`d add the VT in purely if drive/gain was needed as the 3-PRO doesn`t have much of that on its own. That 3-PRO is a much overlooked amp.
4. I think the best petition would be for, when a biggie gig comes along, like the Ed Sheeran one, the touts etc buy the tickets, put them up for sale and NO-ONE buys them. Leave them having bought all of that for nothing. Problem is, that`s very unlikely to happen.
5. Rotos are probablyy the best for this type of sound, but they do lose their tone quickly.
6. I had an issue with them last year, bought an amp, contacted them to make a return, tried telling me I was out of the returns period - because they waited for about 3 days before opening/replying to my e-mail. I challenged this, on the basis of simple mathematics, as in, just count the number of days from date item arrived to date of e-mail. OK, send it back. Then it took about 2 months of going from this person to that person, all of whom "were dealing with it". In the end I sent a very rude terse e-mail and from then it was sorted. Unless I absolutely have to, it`s unlikely I will use them again after that episode, however up until this time I`d never had any issues at all.
7. As well as practice on techniques, eat a banana and some ready salted crisps, and drink plenty of water and some cranberry juice. All these help the body against cramp. Prepare your body against cramp before you do anything that`s likely to cause it.
8.
I have both US Standard and Mexican Standard Precision basses and the US has better pick up, bridge, tuners, neck, wood....there are a lot of differences. The Mexican Standard is a good bass, and I get a great deal of pleasure from owning and playing mine, but the US Standard is even better.
I`m in agreement Dave, Mex are good, US are better. My Mex is my home use bass, my US is my band bass. I probably play the Mex more than the US in fact, but at band volumes the US sounds better, and responds better to the dynamics of my playing.
9. Just goes to show, all this striving for a crystal clear sterilised tone that many seem after, and Flea made a corker with some really rotten gainy sounds - as did John Deacon as mentioned earlier by dudewheresmybass. Maybe those sterile tones aren`t the way forward after all......
10.
Awesome, thanks for the help guys. I've messaged the seller so hopefully he still has it and I can go pick it up soon. In regards to cabs, will any 4 ohm cab work with this amp? I see a lot of Hartke XL cabs come up for sale. Would they do the trick?
Yep, any 4ohm cab will be fine - one capable of handling higher power on paper should be safest. And yes, the Hartke XL cabs would do the trick, they`re very nice cabs, though a bit weighty. If looking for reasonably priced cabs Hartke, Peavey, Ashdown are all worth looking at, as are the Marshall MB cabs, if you can find them.
11. Nice amps, and at £80 a steal. They also, if I recall correctly, operate at 2ohms so you can connect two 4ohm cabs to them - best check that out via manuals/back of the amp to make sure though.
12. Kev just bought a practice amp from me. Good comms, swift payment, all that`s good in a transaction.
13. Most people are happy with DI-ing from my Sansamp, but if they`re not I just make sure the Sansamp is in the line before their DI, that way FOH gets my sound, they use their fave-box, so all are happy.
14. I suppose my Barefaced Big Twin II is a bit of both Kevin, only 50-ish lbs, but with the tilt-back wheels. They`re fine on flat tarmac and indoor surfaces, but on gravelly venue car-parks that haven`t seen any maintenance/repair for a few years they bump about all over the place. Luckily the BTII is just light enough to carry over these surfaces, but on a heavier cab, well don`t expect the bottom of the cab to stay in showroom condition would be my advice.
15. A P/J configuration with an on-board preamp would be my choice for an all rounder.
16. Yep a speaker cab with no tweeter, flats, bumped low-mids and an Ampeg type amp, so think suggestion of an OTB is a very good one, will do that sound all day.
17.
I like that olive finish.
Me too.
18. As an originals band we start with the first song off of our first album (The Hunted, off of Same sh*t Different City) . It`s a real hard-hitter and lets people know exactly what they`re going to get from us. A bit like that special forces programme I`ve just been watching, hit em hard straightaway and don`t relent at any point at all.
19.
Just completed a bass-swap, another one of those illicit ones at a motorway service station. Traded one of my 2015 US Precisions for his 2015 US Jazz. Good comms throughout, recommended. We also had a good chat about basses, amps & motorbike accidents - as you do.
Well very unexpected, but cutting a long story short, Dave bought said Jazz back from me, and the above was repeated though this time without a bass coming my way as it was a straight sale. Same as before, a good all round transaction.
20. In my old punk covers band people - usually drunk 20 something ladies - regularly used to ask for Kings of Leon. The singer regularly used to tell them to eff off.
21. If wanting a Jazz with the 70s pickup spacing the Fender Classic 70s Jazz is a great way of getting that without too much outlay. They are great basses.
22.
Wonder how the MIM Rogers Waters model will do after The Wall
I might get one of these, after all they are in my fave black/black/maple combo, just so I have a Mexican Wall Fender.
23. Yep, Ed & Dans reviews are great as you hear the tone of the instrument very well indeed. There`s also a review of the Tech21 Paradriver that I like, the reviewer doesn`t get tempted - as so many do - to max the drive so all you hear is mush. A good review which has tempted me to buy one, it will land later today, and I just hope I can coax the tones out of it that the reviewer did.
