  1. Past hour
  2. How is that Neil Young tribute band going?
  3. Unfortunately I think the era of cheap Gus Guitars is long past, especially since the Prince connection. I was lucky enough to get my G1 guitar and the G3 black 5-string bass back when the new prices were a fraction of what they are now. The red one in the the photos was second hand and just under £1k, but it was in dreadful condition and cost me almost as much again to have it completely refurbished by Simon about 15 years ago. If you were going to go back in 1996 that would have been in the very early days, as this October is the 30th anniversary of the original weekend in 1994. The weekend has grown beyond its tentative beginnings, and although it could appear to have been taken over by people parading around the town in "costume", there is still a very healthy audience for the musical side of things as witnessed by this and other gigs around the town. The fact that Whitby has it's up and coming own goth band in Westenra has most definitely helped to keep the music current.
  4. Third visit from Leland to James Taylor's Mexico. almost identical to the secndo version. amazing how consistent he is. video: https://youtu.be/tCKEaFr7fVI score: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1n_GHSCS-G3ft6lf5KurShcqRdYfm5Rqg/view?usp=drive_link
  5. I doubt there are much better basses than the import Laklands for the price. I am hugely impressed. GLWTS
  6. I have my eyes on either a Terror Bass or little bass thing from Orange, they both seem like solid options. Just awaiting my ampeg rig to sell before buying.
  7. I've been into short scales for almost twenty years, and my gigging basses are JMJ mustangs. Anyone who dismisses short scale basses is in danger of sounding like an ignorant tw@t — like Scott Devine does in the SBL video, even if it was tongue in cheek. If anyone says their reason for not considering a short scale is that they'd look ridiculous playing it, they need to remember that many punters can't even tell a bass from a guitar, a short scale bass is bigger than a guitar, and there are plenty of people who can play guitar in public without feeling self-conscious about it.
  8. Very interesting... I can't win, I've tried with 2 cables and I get the same issue all round. I will try on my work laptop and see if that wins. My thing now is to figure out the simple operations like how do I change from patch A to patch B... it's been a while since I played with anything like this LOL
  9. That would look great with a painted finish black neck
  10. Thanks! The two in the photos are now my main basses. I have second Gus 5-string in all black which is a back-up for the red and chrome one, and hope to be selling my other two Bass VIs in order to buy another Eastwood Hooky.
  11. Thanks mate, will surely miss it if it sells as it matches my BBBOD 😁
  12. I think there is quite a difference between a fake ric, which I don't think any agrees with, and a ric styled bass. It is pretty obvious that none of those chickenbackers are rics or trying that hard to be like them.
  13. I had an 87 5 string thumb, it's posted elsewhere on this thread, I sold it in the early 2010's when I foolishly thought I'd not be playing bass anymore... I'v finally got round to replacing it with this beauty courtesy of our very own Cosmo Valdemar. A 1996 Thumb 5 NT with MEC rather than EMG electrics. Reminded me of why I played it's older cousin for over 20 years, what a fine instrument it is.
  14. Love the Gus basses - still keep wishing that one would turn up at some price I could afford at the time, but I suspect it won't. Also shame I never got to the WGW. I was due to go in 1996, had the ticket for me and my girlfriend and everything but then me and my girlfriend had one of those not being together any more issues that stopped us going, then I moved to the states, so by the time I came back I was very out of the scene.
  15. I bought a neck from Rob - quick and easy purchase, and arrived well-packed, and he kept me informed throughout. Very happy!
  16. You have some cracking basses. Love the red and chrome bass. Looks amazing. Dave
  17. Have a listen to Electric Rendezvous by Al Di Meola from 1981. It's a superb example of AJ and Steve Gadd rocking out a bit and letting their hair down. Al Di Meola is tearing it up on guitar too. Thoroughly recommended.
  18. I've been using a short scale 30.75" 4 string bass since 2002 and prefer it to a long scale 4 string. In terms of 4 stringers, I personally don't see or notice any disadvantage sonically or playability of a short scale bass over a long scale one. The long and short of it is, that, In the end we all use whatever suits us. 🙂
  19. I really like the Vanderkleys but I've already got a replacement cab (for now!!) so not really interested in a trade. But good thought!
