Well I impulse bought that black one which popped up on Andertons, so thank you to @Harps for the heads up! It’s an eye catching bass and the metallic black is flawless. No rippling or other tell-tale signs of “budget” finishing. I basically concur with @HeadlessBassist on tones - my favourites are middle switch position with the neck in single coil mode, bridge in series or bridge in series on its own. But lots of options to play with. Pickups are pretty neutral voiced but nothing a bit of EQ or careful choice of preamp couldn’t add character to (I did particularly well with a Sansamp profile on ToneX). Lovey neck, profile is very comfortable. My first roasted maple neck, really like the deep caramel. Nice piece of rosewood too which will get better with a little oil or Montys relic wax. Frets are great with just a slight hair of sharp ends here or there. A quick dress and it’ll be fine. I would concur on weight too, probably in the 9 lbs area but nothing out of the ordinary. Overall it’s got a bit of personality and nice to have a twist on the traditional formulas. Even if it is strongly inspired by a RB! Hopefully not the last bass from this brand that we’ll see in the UK.

I have managed to be a member of at least one band since 1986, when I answered my final bass wanted ad. All those bands came through word of mouth and personal recommendation. You have to meet people and cultivate contacts. Jam nights would be a good place to start. We see people attending our jam night and, after awhile, getting together to form bands.

These seem to be getting a bit rarer but despite chasing one of these for years after selling my first i think i need to acknowledge my back needs some lighter weight gear. Here we have a USA made SVT III which preceded the current 3pro's. This one has the much famed SVT IIP preamp couples with a big old led sled solid state power amp. 3 x 12AX7's give it a nice throaty growl but there is no full on valve distortion here just a nice old school type roar. Is missing one slider cap but can still be changed with a plectrum - not that i use the graphic EQ anyway. A few of the pots could do with a blast of deoxit as the amp has been set at my fave EQ and never really changed. I dont have a rack case or anything so ideally its collection from Bolton only but could meet within reason. Possibly consider a part ex for an Ashdown Little Bastard/CTM30 Pics to follow asap

If you're worried about damaging loaned cabs then your overall volume and low end content are more important than watt rating, you can blow drivers with comparatively low power amps if you're an idiot - ask me how I know! Most micro amps will have some sort of built in HPF to remove extreme lows, I'd guess rolling off sharply at around 30hz or something like that. Just listen for speakers distorting (may be harder if you have a driven sound) and roll off the volume/bass as needed. For something tiny which might get close-ish to your big amp the TC RH series or Orange Terror Bass might be worth looking at, they're small class D amps which are designed to sound closer to old school valve amps but go about it in different ways - the Orange uses a valve pre you can drive and the TC uses a digital approach which seeks to emulate valve compression/saturation. RH series are usually dirt cheap on the used market, should be able to grab an RH750 for £200-£250.

A bit late posting but we played another fund raiser last Sunday at the cathedral in North Bay where we played in February of 2024 to help raise money for roof repairs and this time they even paid us for our efforts. Probably at least 200 in the audience, a bit lower than we hoped but it was a beautiful spring day and I think some folks decided to enjoy the good weather. We had a vocalist with us this time and she was great as usual and really knows how to work those old jazz tunes. We did a swing set and then I switched to tenor banjo and one sax player used a bari sax to play a bass line and we played a shorter Dixieland/trad set. Good fun and the church and the band both made money. Shen SB 100 into the Bose PA and Baldwin Ode banjo. The word on the cross above the bass sums up how I feel playing some of the songs. 😊 Edit: Keyboard player is there but hidden behind the alto sax player.

Be aware of ebay and amazon when getting strings. I got fakes from both before. Hope the music shop account is legit!

JMB seems to be the go-to these days. Gumtree used to be reasonably good too, but I think people have gone off it in recent years. I do kinda miss the days when the one and only place you ever needed to look was Loot.
