Haha...I listened and played that Toto version so many times when it first was released, eventually the 7/4 bar started to sound natural, and it was the original Cream version that had a 4/4, unique twist! I also like how they introduce the intro from 'White Room' into the Guitar solo over that 16th note Bass Osinato. Thanks for posting up the chart. 👍

Ibanez SR300, or a GSR200 if money is really tight. I've used both my SR200 and 300 series and they're both great.

@Burns-bass - this makes interesting reading: The relevant measurements for your old Alcoa are 74" overall (plus 2" for the endpin), 47" body (again plus 2" for the endpin), 20.5" upper bout, 26" lower bout. I'm now thinking this isn't a 3/4 DB so much as a 7/8 DB ...

These do look good. All joking aside I’ve got a 3 week tour potentially on the offing next year and I’d love to hear your reviews of this if you go this route.

And yet there are some here posting their pride of having a car with a popping, banging, burping exhaust note, or a motor-bike with an illegal, after-market, 'not for road use' exhaust 'silencer'. Superfluous noise, eh..? Sometimes, apparently, it's wanted, by some.

I've never aspired to function band work. I've probably not got the skill set anyway. The only functions I've done have been for friends who know what we do and are happy with our normal set. I've never seen the attraction of weddings. There's often a lot of travelling involved. There's usually lots of restrictions about setting up and knocking down at the end so it tends to be a very long day. The band is inevitably a bit of a side show, you work hard to fill the dance floor and then someone has to make a speech or there is a cake to be cut or whatever and you have to go again. They can be fun but more are just a chore, you aren't really encouraging me to start looking for weddings now

It’s a hard one. I normally buy expensive and buy once, but £875 for a gigbag is insane. For that you could get 10 Hidersine ones. I reckon you need to start treating my old bass better or I’ll have to start proceedings to get it back.

I would strongly recommend trying to go for a used, slightly higher-end starter bass rather than a brand new Squier Sonic, Markbass, or Harley Benton. Yes, those new starters are so much better than they used to be, but that quality has also trickled up to the lower end of the mid-quality basses. If you find a good used mid-range bass, especially one that's been a little abused, you could end up with a life-long bass instead of something you'll outgrow. Seriously, look at a used Sire or a Squier Classic Vibe. There's one in the classifieds right now for £250—which is "good Harley Benton" money. I recently had to grab a cheap bass for a wedding gig in Latvia. Flying with my expensive instruments is always risky and a pain, and hey, it was my wedding, I could do what I wanted! So instead of renting one for a week, which would have cost me about 300 Euros, I decided to just buy a bass in that price range. What followed was a great adventure, I went to every music shop in Riga to try out everything around that price. I'd tell the staff what I was up to, and they often gave me free rein, hooking me up with the same amp i use at home , some even offered to buy the bass back from me at a reduced rate afterwards. I went into it expecting to walk out with a Sire, a Markbass P , ibanez or maybe a used Harley Benton. What I ended up doing was falling completely in love with a fantastic Squier Classic Vibe P-bass. I took the neck off wrapped it all up in my clothes and paid for checked luggage to bring it home and i'm going to be rehearsing with it tomorrow, It has no business being as good as it is— My Stingray is sitting unloved in its case.

Stiff Little Fingers last night at their annual homecoming gig. I missed Sham69 unfortunately. PiL were also in support. They were OK, but I was never a big fan. Ali McMordie sounded monster, as always. Near the end, they brought on Rory Gallagher's bassist, Gerry McAvoy, for a cover of Gallagher's "The Devil Made Me Do It", which sounded great.

I just got back from Arctangent Festival. Three days of the slightly obscure end of metal and rock. Highlights were: Green Lung - Brilliant performance of old fashioned heavy metal with a bit of humor. Battlesnake - Australian metal with more than a hint of Spinal Tap. God Is An Astronaut - very atmospheric post rock. Emma Ruth Rundle - Solo acoustic, dark and utterly brilliant. Dvne - prog metal, like Mastadon but better. Future headliner. Karnivool - Prog metal, fantastic big production headline show Kylesa - Recently reformed sludge metal legends. Utterly brilliant and relentless. Rolo Tomassi - My favourite performance, legendary mathcore band. Amazing 20th anniversary show. So many others were also amazing.

Understood Laurie, but obvs our needs differ. For toting the DBs about I can rely on the assistance of my roadie, the doughty @Silvia Bluejay, and the only gig I've ever played upstairs on DB was one where I happened to have a KK BabyBass with me, which Silvie carted - solo - up a spiral staircase while I was off finding a parking space. My problem with nylon gigbags built down to a price is that means that everything is built down to a price. The cheap nylon linings start to disintegrate within months, then the cheap zipper tags snap, then the cheap zippers themselves start to fail, and finally the cheap external handles start to rip free from the main bodybag. I'll not claim that I'm the world's gentlest equipment handler, but when I'm breaking down at 1am after playing three hours of rock'n'roll I find it hard to remember "Careful with that gigbag Eugene ...". @Beedster's Bulletproof Deluxe is the perfect solution, but that price! Far Canal.
