To judge those 15s, you must listen using decent headphones or speakers. As I heard it, the Trace sounded best followed by the Barefaced next and the Markbass sounded like a P bass with 90-year-old rounds on, no clarity at all. I know that Markbass cabs are Marmite. In a cab shoot-out. In consequent years, at the South west Bass Bash, Markbass were voted best and worst cabs. In 2025 surely the benefit of 12s and 10s, in a well-designed cab has been proven. Cabs for Barefaced and LFSys have proven that 12s are the modern sweet spot for bass, especially when crossed-over properly to a decent compression driver horn combination That gives you the benefits of that Trace 15 with the power handling to go loud. Even the simple crossover on the BC110T sounds better than most commercial cabs.

I’ve paired both Ashdown ABM600 and RM500 amps with Ashdown PRO NEO 210 cabs (they do 115s as well). If you like the Ashdown sound they’re def worth checking out, reasonably priced and light at about 13kg, plus as the cones (in the 210) are diagonally placed they’re a smaller footprint cab. Though having said that a new one will be more than a used Barefaced cab on here and the Barefaced would, I’m fairly sure, outperform the Ashdown.

New backup bass day got down to one bass but what a bass 72 P but band suggested I was tempting fate turning up to gigs with one bass. I have never needed the backups I’ve taken. Ever! I caved in and thought I’m just going to get a super cheap bass that can sit in a case - saw the Squier Jag Bass with one big pup - £219 - got it yesterday expecting it to be bad - but neck is satin smooth and zero fret sprout or sharp frets, 32inch - not had 32 or Jag before. It’s really nice to play. Pickup is nicely balanced and has a nice grunt to it. Tuners seem to be fine. Bridge is cheap - that and the strings are the only things I’ll change I think. im digging playing it too - rehearsals tomorrow to test it out.

Can you figure out what’s going on here? https://www.bassdirect.co.uk/product/fender-precision-bass-1962-sherwood-green-refinish-pre-owned/ From my reading it’s half a neck (fingerboard replaced) and some vintage tuners and that’s it.

Well, we are all different, aren't we? I have Schallers on all my Spectors which were / are used for hundreds of gigs and they (Schallers) plus the same leather straps on each keep them in the position I like (see profile pic)

Yeppers, my M5 is on my board as a 'modulation box'; good little unit that's even better with an expression pedal.

Perfectly serviceable basses mate; you’d spend £100 on a knackered squier

Barefaced, GR, alusonic... Something like 1x10", 1x12", 2x10", 2x12".

Never 15. 12s for me.

Just spotted in a local charity shop window. Looks in good nick (through the window). £45 seems like a bargain. Are these decent? I don’t need a new bass. But I do keep looking at black P Basses that are 10 or 100 times this price.

Agreed - I remember posting a fairly lengthy contribution on just this issue around five or six years ago - I find that Schallers permit my basses to subtly tip forward a little, creating a bit of an uncomfortable angle between chest and the top edge of the bass. I jettisoned straplocks in favour of rubber washers years ago.

Any recommendations for a relatively inexpensive but lightweight cabinet to use with my Ashdown EVO500? I’ve been using 2 x Hartke 4.5XLs for 25 years now, but they are backbreakingly heavy to lug around now I’m an old biddy. I’d honestly settle for one lightweight cabinet with fewer speakers and the ability to deal with my amp sufficiently now. Bestow your expertise upon me please, fellow Basschatters….

The real questions should be: "Are you getting gigs for weddings where the couple are saying 'We saw you at X's wedding'?". "Are people dancing to your music and having a good time?" Usually after the buffet, but extra points for people staying on the dance floor after the first dance.. If you are, then don't worry about it. We are our own worst critics.
