  1. Past hour
  2. Lots of good ideas for working with your current gear. . . . but, how about buying a better bass, or a good preamp pedal to add more clarity and definition to your sound.
  3. a minimalist approach...
  4. I’ve been pretty much coasting along in comparison to many in this thread. I did meet up with a bunch of old mates from the 80s that I hadn’t seen for years and sadly one is now in a wheelchair with MS. I already knew this but actually seeing him like this wasn’t that pleasant. One of the others was due to have stent fitted but refused the op as apparently he could suffer a stroke (he’s already had 2). Oh for those days in the 80s when we were all young and seemingly indestructible.
  5. Is the pedal definitely the correct one for the head? (there may be different versions for different generations of head). I would expect that once the pedal is connected that it takes precedence, and probably best not to use the head's switches. Are all of the switches on both the head and pedal momentary or latching? (The type of each switch on the pedal should be the same as the one on the head). If all the lights on the head are on, what happens when you insert the pedal connector? (Do all hot switching tests with master volume at zero). If certain pedal switches don't work every time they are pressed, it could be they need their contacts cleaning. It could also be worth cleaning the pins and female pin sockets on the head. Although there are many switch cleaning products available, I recommend Deoxit D5.
  6. This is a work in progress - needs screwholes countersunk & knob positions decided. That requires a steady hand so it's going to need to get a bit warmer in the garage first!
  7. And again - Wow!!

  10. The black active 5 string that @Linus27 is maybe considering? Not to rain on this thread but other people's opinions (mine included) generally don't help. The real solution is to try for one's self 😊
  11. We played a gig the Sunday before Christmas; the keys player was hobbling around with an arthritic ankle and foot (6 months ago he had an operation to fuse the joints and went into anaphylactic shock and all but died on the operating table, caused by the anaesthetic, and they couldn't operate!!), the drummer brought his nephew to set up the kit, because he'd strained his lower back and couldn't bend down, the guitarist is a cancer survivor, currently OK and I've a bad back and arthritic hip which meant I sat on a stool for the gig! In the last year I've lost a band leader to fatal stroke, another will probably never gig again due to several doses of double pneumonia, lost dozens of gigs due to 2 band leaders having hip replacement surgery, and 1 band leader taking time off to be with his sick wife! Getting old is more than tough, it's an Fing PIA.
  12. flat! 😂
  13. Here is the reason for this request, @BigRedX... 😉
  14. Now for sale on here.
  15. It was active and terrible. Decent quality paint but thats the only positive I can think of.
  16. I was given this by my wife as well, a complete surprise. Also Kevin Rowlands' 'Bless Me Father', I don't know huge amount about him other than I really liked the early version of Dexy's, but he does seem like a very interesting character so it should be a good read.
  17. I bought this as a back up but I don`t need it as I don`t have a cab anymore. It`s only been out of the house once and that was to plug it into an Ampeg 8 x 10 in Berkley studio and it is surprisingly loud for a 250 watt head. It`s totally as new. Specs below. 18. This is why I always move on Stingray 5s whenever I get one. Breaks my heart as I find them amazing apart from the string spacing.
  19. Today
  20. Thanks, I came across these when I was looking into options. I drew out the circuit in the OP and added in the second cross-connection as per the lower diagram, then compared the two. The OP circuit simply puts a resistance (let's call it R) in the path of one of the pickups at a time, to attenuate its signal. The effect of adding the cross-connection is to add a second resistive path in parallel: At zero attenuation there is no difference. At maximum attenuation the resistance in series with the pickup is now ½R instead of R. At the halfway point, it becomes ⅜R instead of ½R, so the taper of the blend has changed. Also with this circuit you wouldn't get the effect of completely disconnecting a pickup if you cut the resistive tracks near the end. It would be a quick and easy thing to try though. In the upper diagram, the second cross-connection is tied to ground, which is a different approach altogether and has the effect of loading the pickups, which the OP circuit doesn't.

  22. Ahh, I knew it was too good to be true. There's a niggling fault and it looks a lot like it's the pickup There's an intermittent low level buzz coming from the bass which goes away if you wiggle or press down on the pickup. Also goes away if you go into the cavity and pull on the pickup wires. It doesn't stop the pickup making sound, but it's audible and seems to change the tone of the pickup a little when the mild humming/buzzing is happening. That's a PITA because the pickup is epoxy potted by the looks of things. Damn! What I think I'll do is get a Warman MM sized pickup as a stopgap (they're only £25 after all) then see what I can do about the stock pickup issue - if anything. What's low level annoying me is that I had a spare ATK CAP quad coil pickup, but I put it in a Squier Jag H and I was too lazy to take the pickup out when I sold the bass. Should have used my crystal ball!
