Flipping basses for profit – fair game or not cool?
knirirr replied to Allaboutthebass's topic in General Discussion
Indeed - I recently bought something from him. Unfortunately it turned out have a small fault, but he seemed happy for me to return it. Currently it is in the hands of Parcelforce. I'm sure it's something he'll be able to fix so it can be re-listed (I spotted something else I'll bag instead). -

I remember going to see Bootsy's Rubber Band at the Clapham Grand and he didn't come on till about 2330, despite being billed as 2100. Everyone missed their tubes... And I went to see Jonas Hellborg at the Blue Note - due to an alleged difficulty getting hold of some fancy amp (you'd think someone would organise these things!) he came on about half midnight!

I’m the opposite, I love the feel, but hate the sound. They make everything sound clanky to my ears. But, then I’ve only ever really played cheaper flats. -

Most of the oils I’ve used have the effect of darkening the wood (tung oil, tru-oil, gunstock oil), would shellac not be a better option?

My first recollection of seeing an ‘Original’ Overwater was as a teenager, pressing my nose up against the window of Chris & Andy’s on High Bridge in Newcastle in the early eighties. One image that sticks in my mind was a window display containing an Original series fretless four string displayed alongside a JayDee Supernatural - that image caused unnatural stirrings in the trouser department.

There’s a guy in Bristol who runs an online guitar shop in Easton. His business model involves scouring Gumtree, Facebook and buying cheap stuff at Gardiner Houlgate. He may make a few quid in his job, but even better, he’s taking unloved instruments and making them playable and used again. Thats the kind of flipping I respect. -

43+ plugins for the price of 1, IK Multimedia: https://bedroomproducersblog.com/2025/10/21/ik-multimedia-group-buy-2025/ I think their servers are being seriously hammered though as the website is up and down like a yo-yo!! I've about 30 so far including the entire MODO Bass and MODO Drums suites.

That equals: B x £30 + g x £10 = £1000 g x £10 = £1000 - B x £30 B = 33 AND g = 1 Solved. Could you share some pictures of your basses, that g-word sidestep is not of importance.

I guess I would fall into the ambivalent camp on this topic. Buying and selling anything involves a bit of risk and a bit of effort. If that leads someone to making a bit of profit then I am probably OK with it. If someone profits from something I sell, I don’t particularly care as it’s being sold for a reason. -

2005 Epiphone Embassy Special IV in dark blue. It's a flat colour, I have no idea why the camera has invented some kind of burst. Well balanced, lightweight bass just a little different to the norm. Has an Entwistle neodymium pickup (reverse P) and a Guyker high mass bridge. 22 fret neck. Matching headstock. Local sale preferred (Aberdeen) but will post at buyer's expense, or meet up at reasonable distance. Just looking to thin the pack a little, and have two cheapy reverse P basses in the stable. Weight is 3.6kg/7.94lb according to the bathroom scales.

I have two used Spector USA bass bridges that once belonged to NS2 basses I no longer own, I had taken these off in favour of black hardware. One is the heavy all-brass version, this has faded somewhat on the bass side. I’m not sure if this could be polished up. The other is the lighter, aluminium version, this one in better condition. It is considerably lighter. Note: these will not drop into a Euro bass without some re-routing to enlarge the space slightly. £150 for each bridge or £285 for the pair. Price includes UK shipping.

Idiot boy question: what diameter drainpipe do you need to buy to get an internal diameter of 64mm? How much difference does it make if you are out by a few mm?

Both bands primarily rehearse new material, although if a song goes wrong at a gig we'll decide whether it was a one-off or if we need to rehearse it. I'll upload the version of the song to work on to Dropbox for one band so we've got a single reference. For the other band, we have song name and artist name and the arrangements will get rejigged if there's a gob-iron solo (soloes tend to be gob-iron followed by guitar, rinse and repeat). There aren't many complex arrangements, it's mainly Dr Feelgood or old time rock'n'roll with the odd outlier. Where there are more complex arrangements, we follow the original.
