Don't do that. The title of this thread is "AI in music", so let's keep it relevant? And no, I have never used ChatGPT. I have no desire to either. I've got a brain, and despite what my frequent word salad spewed around here might suggest, it's reasonably competent at times

AI for finding a cure for cancer is good. AI for replacing people's jobs, absolutely not good. As far as music goes, we survived Synths, so we can get through this. IMO the bigger problem is that younger kids don't see live music as a thing. It's as interesting to them as golf. They have their songs on Spotify, playing on their phones, it's musical wallpaper. My musical career has gone from cutting edge to historical. 90% of the music I get asked to play is from the 20th Century. When AI has its own programs on Radio 4 I'll start getting annoyed.

All for live music being performed by real people. But, if you limit ANY "actual performance" to humans, what does that imply for, in order of artificality, to the following: 1. guitarists and bass players using pedals? 2. keys players playing the horn section on their keys, doing away with the need for eg a trumpet or sax player for the occasional song (although won't be anything like as good IMO!)? 3. bands using backing tracks? 4. bands replacing drummers entirely with drum synths? 5. solo artists replacing entire bands with backing tracks? 6. DJs playing recorded music with no need for any live musicians? 7. Jukeboxes replacing DJs? Fwiw when we play live we're at level 1.

I’ve used tinytone and the results were quite good but not perfect – really quite expensive too. Tinytone and Jack’s instrument repair services (two branches of the same organisation I think) have been unresponsive in the recent past. I’m just waiting for two guards from Earl Pilanz now. I’ll be back with more when they arrive. Very easy process and all facilitated with enthusiasm by Brian - he seems very good to work with for custom guards and turnaround is very reasonable

That's exactly how I feel about Ashdown. I'd always played Trace Elliot then went to Ashdown as soon as the company started. I've bought a few pre-owned heads over the years but that complexity you refer to has always driven me away. Now I'm tempted to buy a new UK ABM600 and find the time and patience to make it work for me.

What amp do you use to drive the Monza with from the Bassrig please?

I don't mind the idea of the use of AI to actually help to shape a sound, but when it comes to any actual performance aspect, it should come from a human.

Yeah I know. What are the key features that are missing in garageband but have in Logic Pro? Can't I just use Logic Pro directly instead of upgrading later?

Their new years eve gig at Barrowlands,in the early eighties, is one of my all-time favourite live performances...would have loved to have been there.

But it isn't necessarily. The satisfaction of producing a professional sounding song using AI as a tool for me has been just as good as sitting for hours with a guitar or bass to come up with a single element of a track. You are mastering a new and different craft if you are using it to do more than just writing a prompt to produce a funny song about basschat. I have spent days on a single as yet unfinished song using AI so it isn't just here's a sentence and out pops a masterpiece.

I am reminded of The Hitchhiker’s Guide… You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts compared to London. All joking aside, Greater London is fricking huge and South London (born & bred here) is a particular PITA to get around.

I made three good purchases in 2025. First of all the LFSys Monza, which I wrote about elsewhere on this forum. What’s strange about it is that it’s FRFR, yet the sound is just wonderful. I’ve also owned other cabs from a well‑known English builder, and those performed very well, but I’ve never had a cab that naturally sounds this good. My second-best purchase is an Origin Effects Bassrig Super Vintage. I use it as a DI to the FOH. It saves me from hauling around fragile tube amps, while you can hardly tell the difference in sound. It’s the perfect combination with the Monza. My third purchase is a Japanese Fender P from the E‑series (around 1986). I already owned one, and it has been my main bass for ten years, even though I’ve had much more expensive American Ps. Because it’s such an ultimate (personal) match, and because they’re rare, I bought another one as a backup. The serial numbers are almost identical. They could have been built in the same week or month; the wood might even come from the same tree.

I bought my first Panda FI Mk1 off a fellow BC'er back in 2018 - he and I have stayed mates ever since meeting up at a service station in time honoured fashion to buy/sell the goods! But I never quite gelled with that or the subsequent several I bought and gave up on! I always thought that this could be a great product (and fed my thoughts back to Peter) as and when: - they improved the tracking (done - v4) - came out with a more compact pedalboard friendly model (done - v4 VIP) - made this user friendly for bassists who wanted some great usable sounds out of the box and allowed for better on-board editing - looks they've cracked that with v4.5 The MXR Synth provides all that too and has demonstrated the level of demand for the above. But for an extra £20 the FIv4 provides a more capable synth engine, a better display, many more presets, and the ability to deep dive with a bespoke computer editor for those who would like to have that option. Feels like a no-brainer to me, and it's great to be able to support a home-grown product championed by one of our own. VIP just ordered 😊
