  1. Past hour
  2. Having been a long time nickel user I recently tried a switch to steel. First some fat beams and then very recently hi beams. I got used to the rougher texture pretty quickly. To me both have a lovely low tension and response. Perhaps a controversial view but Fat beams didn't actually seem significantly brighter to me than various nickle-plated roundwounds I'd used on my basses recently (NYXL, lo rider nickel, dragon skin nickel). Decent strings though but not quite what i expected. Hi beams are as I expected/wanted them to be - really bright and clear, piano-esque almost.
  3. Bagman

    Hohner B2a

that's the bananas talking great job with the bass
  4. Pornograffitti - Extreme
  5. Trades? Something might get my attention!
  6. The terms may be unfamiliar but it's very straightforward.
  7. Almost the same - ovals is the main difference, I think. Maybe bridge pickup position too? Lovely bass, though! I didn’t import it. Bought it locally, but don’t know its history before that…
  8. yep , certainly the Diamond Bass Comp can be
  9. After last night's gig in a pub in Paisley a random stranger tried to sell me a Vox AC50 that 'used to belong to the bass player in The Animals. He sold it to my dad. It's huge as f**k and better than yours' I don't need it I said. it's better that yours he said again. I still don't want it. I couldn't lift it. Was it Chas Chandler's I asked. Aye, he's English. This went on for several minutes before I walked away. Back on stage I asked my fellow bandmaster why all the idiots always speak to me. His answer was brilliant. "I used to think I attracted them but you're different league" 😄
  10. yeah , it's a thing , the branding of the strap has to match the instrument silly I know but there you go It doesn't matter if the Strap is made by a non-instrument maker however
  11. Very nice! I was watching a documentary a while ago and saw a bassist using an original like that with the ashtrays on and ever since thought it was a very tasty looking combination on a Fender Jazz.
  12. Peter Noble now in Whitchurch and closing I got my first bass amp from the Llanishen store about 86.
  13. Got there at last. This is the complete bass performance of the tune 'Big Fun' from the first Tribal Tech album 'Spears' (1985). One more and I will have the whole album down. This was an important record for me (yes, it was on vinyl when I first got hold of it) and I loved Willis's sound and percolating lines but I couldn't get them at the time. Transcribing and playing along with this tune 40 years later, I am able to recognise how far I have come as a player - most of this stuff is relatively easy and reading the lines shows that the harmony was not as exotic as I thought at the time. https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/big-fun-tribal-tech/
  14. Quad electrostatic speakers!
  15. Music Exchange and Bass Centre in Birmingham, unused to go there with bandmates in the late 80s/early 90s.
  16. No worries that's what I thought, worth a try though. If someone else wants to take the C4 off your hands let me know and take the controller. Cheers
  17. I have one of these and it’s very good. I don’t fiddle with the controls much, tending to leave it in passive mode in the usual 60:40 jazz pup mix but I do like the string spacing
  18. A1 in Manchester, visited a few times before it changed to Academy of Sound. still ace for a time. died when Sound Control took over and eventually croaked it. I wish I’d had the Bass Centre Manchester when I had a decent job - that was another cool little place. GBBL - because Drew is lovely and it was ridiculously close to my house.
  19. That's some demo room, @SuperSeagull. Well done to your dad helping to build it. Some lovely, classic hifi there, possibly Garrard turntables and QUAD electrostatic speakers. That wee girl doesn't too impressed by it, though, even with Ron Mael at the controls.
  20. Thanks so much for filming that! A single side sounds nice, not dissimilar to my Polychrome. It's not Boss-wild, but certainly has flavour. I expected there to be more going off when you mixed the two 50/50 though! The impact of two flangers in parallel is much more subtle than I expected. Overall great sounding though, I really appreciate the insight!
  21. I found out about this last night, very nice, I love the aesthetic from that era & it should appeal to the Death From Above 1979 / Jesse F Keeler enthusiasts Thomann is quoting £879 and 9-12 weeks from release, seems competitive with other specialist amps of that power & size & weight… product manual available https://peavey.com/series/super-festival-series/ retailer https://www.thomann.co.uk/peavey_super_festival_f_1200b.htm designer comparing vs original https://youtu.be/LBTv-jnU1Ro
  22. We're young but we fart?
  23. Here's mine, pretty happy and settled with it.. 🙂
  24. I was going to say J G Windows. My dad bought me my first bass there, around 1985. The photo doesn't have the shop name, but it's on the right with the "gramophone records" sign
  25. Being a fretless player myself and liking to add that small touch of reverb you like too, here zre mu thoughts as I've used all the gear you mentioned. The Eich and GR Bass are close sound wise, the GR Bass being more neutral with tighter bass. Forget the Glockenklang as it will be completely lost in the mix, it sounds terrific on its own, but not in band context. I don't like the Barefaced tone, so won't say a word.
