I really like this. It’s like a little slice of the Microcosm (and similar pedals) boiled down to its simplest form. I could absolutely make use of this on my ambient board.

I 2nd the Gretsch shout. I picked up a used but basically brand new one from BassBros for £245 and it’s been the best money I’ve ever spent. I'm regularly on the lookout for one of these (since you posted the picture of your white one) but they rarely pop up from my searches. -

Shame he doesn't allow walk-ins to try stuff out first. I'm only up the road from him in north London as well. That's what he told me when I last contacted him. -

Moe Foster did some articles in the 90s Bassist magazine, as far as I can remember his Jazz bass looked fairly conventional. He did say the ebony fingerboard had come from a double bass, but presumably it had had been cut down to normal Jazz bass proportions. edit; OK, in the link it looks to have a somewhat extended fingerboard, but not so much that it only had room for one pickup, maybe 2 octaves or so?

Another Watanabe/Gwizdala moment, the tune is 'Perfect Water' from the 2011 recording 'Tricoroll'. Horacio Hernandez completes the trio on drums. You have got a chance with most of this as there is nothing too crazy going on. https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/perfect-water-kazumi-watanabe/

Perhaps if copying a proven design, but even then the economies of scale are against you. Now if there is no value assigned to labor, and you already have the tools, the gap is closer, but it's the "proven design" part of the equation that makes a difference IME. There's also the cost of developing the design and building prototypes that's often (conveniently ignored), but by ignoring even the minimal cost of design, labor, quality hardware, testing and wasted materials, then yes it can appear to be less expensive. There are also the DYI designs that, due to inexperience or lack of understanding, become "amp killers" due to not understanding reactive load limits in amps when it comes to crossover design, that bring hidden costs to the table. Yes, I run into this often enough, especially from the OCD crowd that thinks that every crossover needs multiple Zobel networks without any consideration for what ends up being lumped resonant tank circuits. This is just my experience, based on what I have seen over the (many) years.

Well I'm very impressed that they are using thick cable. If I had a trace I would definitely be following your fine example! -
That bass was Gibson's attempt to take on the increasingly sophisticated bass designs that were emerging by the mid-to-late '70's. They did a good job in so many ways, as the sublime tone of those basses proves. It's one of the best sounds for heavy rock/ alternative music ever in my opinion. However, as was not at all uncommon at that time, comfort and playability for the poor sod who had shelled out all that money were not really considered at any stage of the design process. So you ended up with a bass where the reach to the first fret was so far away it was in another post code and you needed the services of an orthopedic surgeon after playing a 45 minute set standing up with it.

I’m really interested to hear more reviews on this, and thanks for those who have shared. I’ll likely hold off until I get more of a sense of other’s opinions. I ended up moving my Black Panel on. I always preferred the tone out of the 1/4” rather than the DI as the non-defeatable cab sim just killed the dynamic range and feel, meaning that my JF Capo easily supplanted it on my board. Two years on and the Capo for me is still the very best preamp I’ve owned so it’ll take something special to swap it out. Given Origin seem to have paid attention to their target market feeling the same and have introduced a proper switch to address the cab-sim, I’m very tempted by this one. I happened to really love the squashy compression of the Black Panel so it’s also interesting to hear from feedback that this sounds a lot ‘quicker’ with less of that natural compression. -

Keith McMillen KMI 12 Step and MIDI Expander This is the original KMI 12 Step Controller. It can be used as a set of bass pedals, to trigger chords, samples or even drum sounds. I’ve used it with a variety of synth modules for adding strings and organ for live gigs. I’m now playing more keyboards live so I’ve gone back to my Hammond bass pedals. There is software online to hook it up to a computer or iPad but I’ve always used it with hardware and it has done the job really well. I’ve colour coded the ins and outs with tape but can remove if required I’ve also taped the note names on the unit as I found it easier to see live. I used masking tape so it’s easy to remove without much residue to clean. KMI has now been rebranded as Muse Kinetics since Keith McMillen sadly died last year. Support is still available for all the KMI branded versions of their products. It’s really small and neat compared to a traditional bass pedal controller and weighs next to nothing. The unit itself is slim and made from woven carbon fibre. I have the original (tatty) packaging for both the pedals and the expander. I’ve included a link so you can see what it does. The Mark 2 version retails at around £435 street. The included MIDI expander was bought separately for £65 as I wanted to integrate it with my outboard hardware rather than use it with my computer. Postage at buyer’s cost UK only. No trades.

Does Size Matter? Is 8” Big Enough?
Bill Fitzmaurice replied to Chienmortbb's topic in PA set up and use
As one who does both commercial and DIY designs I have to disagree. One major advantage to DIY is being able to build designs that are labor intensive without concern for the cost of the labor. There's a reason why high end outfits like Danley Sound Labs get top dollar/quid for their products, and it's not just the cost of the components, it's also the cost of the labor to build them. A DIY build of a sophisticated design can easily match the performance of a high end speaker costing $5k at a fifth that price or less. Where commercial has the advantage of economy of scale is in the low to midrange price range, but even there DIY can still be the better route. You can buy a simple ported or vented box or you can build one for the same price but loaded with premium drivers, whereas buying a commercial one with premium drivers would raise the cost considerably. Now that's not to say that all DIY designs are gems by any means, I see cringe worthy junk all the time. But to be fair I see plenty of cringe worthy commercial junk too. Maybe not in the $5k range but certainly in the $500 range. And lest I forget...well, I did actually...DIY doesn't have expenses for marketing and distribution, office staff, accountants, lawyers, offices and factories, the guys on the loading dock...it's a long list that all contribute to the price you pay.
