AttitudeCastle
Hey Guys, I just spend almost all my money and plan to spend the rest of it on gear, so i want to have it insured just in case! my families house insurance only covers your stuff over £500 when its at home, once taken out the house the contrcat is seen as broken, i went through all this with my trombone, but when i joined an orchestra they had insurance that covers every member all the time that was that sorted, so i want to insure my Bass and amps and all that jazz where do i go? how much will it cost? etc anyone? woodyratm
http://www.musicguard.co.uk/home.asp Is what i use to insure mine. I'm 13 quid a month which insures my lakland, Stingray and backline. Still need to add my pedalboard at some point!

Paul S
We just went through this process here at home. I looked at dedicated instrument insurance and it was usually >£!00. Joining MU is, what, £150? To get us extra cover on our house insurance for high value items taken out of the home up to a value of, say, £3K added an extra £20 or so to the premium. Seemed the best solution to me.

molan
I used these guys for my house insurance: http://www.ehomeinsurance.co.uk/ And paid an additional premium to specifically cover musical instruments for professional use outside the home We've just had to claim for damage to a ceiling following leaky pipes & they were brilliant. toneknob
I did a quick tot-up of my gear's (estimated) price and it came in at a surprising 5-figure plus sum, so I decided it's time to kick Direct Line to the kerb for instrument insurance and go specialist. I looked at a load of providers and went with MusicGuard in the end. I think what swung it was their percentage "out of the house" policy, where you can define how much of your gear is likely to go travelling with you. Others I looked at were: www.quotiva.co.uk www.allianzmusicalinsurance.co.uk www.eandl.co.uk www.victorcknight.co.uk www.larkinsurance.co.uk www.endsleigh.co.uk/musical-instruments www.clarionins.com I can't remember exactly why I rejected the others, but there must have been good reasons What they do ask for though is (a) proof of ownership in the event of a claim and (2) vintage and rare gear needs a recent valuation (within three years). So I asked them what constitutes proof of ownership. A picture with me and the equipment, or a receipt detailing the equipment. What I did was take a dated digital picture of everything with a hard copy of the policy in shot. As for valuations, I asked what constituted vintage or rare, and they said that's up to me - if it's not easily replaceable then it qualifies. Today I picked up a valuation from a pro for two guitars, and one came in £1k more than I'd guessed at, the other £500 more. So up goes the premium, but then again that's the point of it really, I suppose. Edited October 20, 2009 by toneknob
xgsjx
I'm with Direct line for my home insurance & it will cover my gear upto whatever I specify I need & have double checked & is covered worldwide for semi pro use (I should be so lucky!). No precise in-car policy (musicguard are very clear about this), and also no cover if you're earning money from gigging.
KevB
I took out insurance with Endsleigh specifically for music gear, think I'm insured up to 2-3K for under 40 quid per year. Almost as soon as I took it out the band folded and I've not been regularly gigging since!

NJE
Brilliant, just looking for insurance at the moment as I have been far too lucky for too many years and just started gigging again. NJE
Endsleigh online quote: £35 for the year to cover me for £2700 worth of gear what an absolute bargain, must be something wrong! Simon.
I was going to recommend Musicguard as well - good customer service & a decent price compared to some other I looked at. However, having read the rest of this thread, I think I might be looking at Endsleigh when my cover is up for renewal! Shame it's not until December... Bigwan
My 'collection' has got a little out of hand of late so I thought a quick quote would be a good idea. £118 seems pretty good to me considering I managed to max out the quote engine (max £10,000 cover)... Hazy Bass
I haven't tried Endsleigh - sounds like an excellent deal. Will look next time. I've had Musicguard on & off for over 10 years - I think they were one of the few available at that time. Always been really good. Public liability is included & it covers in-car, out of the home - pretty well all possibilities. I only had to claim once - way back in the beginning. My harmonica player had his van stolen (not while at a gig or anything) with all his kit in it (& pretty well all his worldly possessions!) - amazing how much a bag full of harmonicas adds up to, plus amps, mics, cables etc. They paid up immediately - no questions. In fact as far as I remember their main concern was to make sure we had claimed enough! Cheers, Andy
BottomEndian
This might sound like a stupid question... hell, I'm pretty sure it is. Anyway, how do you go about figuring out how much to insure your instruments for? Especially when they're modded and thus pretty much unique. Do you take the RRP (or street price?) of the instrument and then add on the cost of the mods and how much it'd be (if anything) to have them fitted/routed/painted/whatever? Or would insurance only pay out to the value of the original, unmodded bass? Out of my 5 basses, only 1 is stock (the SUB), so this is a pretty important factor to me.
